I totally agree with your guest that Ukraine has done an enormous damage to Russia in exchange of four Oblast occupied but the personnel and military hardware lost not to mention the economic damage caused by this war to Russia is incredibly high and it degraded their army who used to be the second most powerful in the world. Now Russia was demoted to just the second best army in Ukraine. That’s why the west should be thankful to Ukraine for doing this without any NATO boots on the ground Russian military might has been reduced considerably. The "unprecedented" escalation is Russia bringing in a cobelligerent. The war is now 3 direct parties with their own national soliders, and generals at the front line in direct fight. Putin is deluded to believe he can escalate at such a high level with no response. Also none of the weapons used are "long range" less than 200 miles is hardly able to be called long range. Tomahawks are long range 1500 miles. If putler keeps escalating Ukraine may end up with those soon.

Ukraine needs to fight Russia to a standstill, that’s the strategy, and about the best Zelensky can hope for. A draw for Putin is more much serious because it represents a loss.
