For centuries Russian rulers have been prepared to sacrifice their citizens in high numbers to achieve their political objectives (25 million Russian dead in World War 2). Nick Townsend; it's true someone after Putin might be worse. But in my view, if that potentially worse person were already there, he would have ousted Putin already. On these pages I have often expressed the view that Putin is very much in the mould of Napoleon; once Napoleon had been finally defeated and removed, France collapsed back into exhaustion, and fell back on a weak monarchy. There was no one in the wings to carry on his 'work'. I think if Putin did go, Russians would also heave a sigh of relief!!

The peace deal would be between the USA and Russia. Russia wants a new European security framework which would withdraw NATO forces back to their 1991 posture. Ukraine is just a part of that deal but their total defeat would be a motivating event. I think that's where we are heading.
