As much as I would like to agree. You underestimate Putin's total disregard for Russian lives. For centuries Russian rulers have been prepared to sacrifice their citizens in high numbers to achieve their political objectives (25 million Russian dead in World War 2). Putin would consider it a bargain if it cost 1 million Russians dead to conquer Ukraine.

Nick Townsend; it's true someone after Putin might be worse. But in my view, if that potentially worse person were already there, he would have ousted Putin already. On these pages I have often expressed the view that Putin is very much in the mould of Napoleon; once Napoleon had been finally defeated and removed, France collapsed back into exhaustion, and fell back on a weak monarchy. There was no one in the wings to carry on his 'work'. I think if Putin did go, Russians would also heave a sigh of relief!!

The peace deal would be between the USA and Russia. Russia wants a new European security framework which would withdraw NATO forces back to their 1991 posture. Ukraine is just a part of that deal but their total defeat would be a motivating event. I think that's where we are heading.

@@foilhat1138 The Ukrainians are running out of manpower. The new recruits get only minimal training and are not at all motivated to fight. This is the scenario for a military collapse. On top of that Zelensky and the parliament are both illegitimate and hated, which is the scenario for a political collapse. The USA has no appetite to fight Russia in Ukraine and the bellicose Europeans couldn't without American backing. So I'll stick with my assessment.

I think Putin has some kind of schoolboy image of himself as a latterday Alexander Nevsky, a heroic saviour of RU culture who defeats the expansive (western) Teutonic knights, abhors the West, and restores RU honour. Rather they should let American withdraw it's support for Ukraine, coz European security will be more at risk than that of America. We all know that Russian's loses are catastrophe as well, though hidden. In 1800s, Russia's GDP per capita nominal was greater than China's. Over the past year, China has overtaken Russia, even though China has half the land mass and ten times the population (!). Just think what Russia could have been if wiser decisions had been made. Putin is a reckless gambler - gambling with millions of human lives for the fun of it, and not much more.
