This guy is talking like a soldier in his dismissal of trade sanctions. Not only has Russia lost significant markets, those markets have found alternative sources of energy. Further, it is all well and good to have massive reserves of natural resources. But Ukraine is attacking the infrastructure needed to produce and store these resources and the trade sanctions are making it difficult to repair the damage caused. Finally, the Russian economy is collapsing, which means nothing to Putin now. But see if he can afford the raw materials to actually rebuild the exhausted military hardware he has lost. See if he can replace the intellectual drain of its citizens who have found other places to live that value their services. War is not just the military, it is economical and Russia no longer has superiority over Ukraine in that sense.

I don't agree with Sean that Sanctions have hardly had any effect as Gas and oil is sold elsewhere. Gas is not sold elsewhere because Russia has no pipelines to China or India. Oil is being sold ever less because Ukraine is destroying Russian oil depots and refinery's and secondly sanctions on Russia's shadow fleet is making that obsolete. But sanctions are far more than just oil and Gas. Sanctions on banks has frozen the economy, sanctions on technology and machinery. Russian planes and trains no longer function because they're built in the west, major infrastructure like Hydro plants, Refinery's and so on. Even Russian military weapons like tanks were full of parts made in the west. Putin is pushing hard because he knows economic collapse is not far away and when that happens the Army will cave in !!!

Russian losses in WWII were so severe that by 1945, 80% of the Soviet Union's cohort of males born in 1922 (only 23 years earlier) were dead. Read that again: BY THE END OF WWII, 80% OF RUSSIAN MALES AGED 23-YEARS OLD, WHO WERE BORN IN 1922 WERE DEAD. On either sides of that year (1921 and 1923 etc) there were similar losses but not as severe. The demographic impact of WWII, some 80 years ago, has had far reaching demographic implications for modern Russia and those implications are still being felt today. You can say that Russia can afford the losses incurred by its current strategy and use of Meat Wave assaults in its' war on Ukraine but the reality is that they can't afford it. The gruesome results of this current war are: hundreds of thousands of dead and even more seriously injured. It is also estimated that 600,000 young men (of child creating age) have left the country (and as of yet have not returned). And these were the highly educated of that cohort and many were members of key economic sectors whose skills are not easily replaced. Before the war it was estimated by the UN World Population Center that, given current demographic trends, in a worse- case scenario that the Russia population could decrease to 85 million (from its current number of 140 million) by the end of this century. And that was a 'worse case' scenario BEFORE this War. That number represents a population comparable to Britain today. In such a situation, a country with the largest land mass on the planet would have a population equal to Great Britain today. With 1.4 BILLION Chinese sitting on Russia's Southeastern border, that is totally unsustainable. What is the expression: You do the math.
@waynek80512 күн бұрын

Canada's GDP is about $2.1 trillion per annum. 2% is $40 billion. That works out to over $10,000 per Canadian per annum. This is actually a ridiculous sum not based in reality. NATO military spending has no relationship to how much the US spends on defense. If the rest of NATO spent 5% the US would not cut back on military spending. Stop counting 2% without defining what that is!! US Coast Guard is included, Canadian CG isn't as an example, don't talk like Trump, thínk! The enormous waiste in US and German procurement proves you'll have to be more specific: 2% of whát? And even then: it's ínput, not output: stop repeating dumm Trump lines, sry to say

07:55 Exactly ZERO countries have been "swallowed up" by Russia. In order for anyone to be, "next" there would have had to have been at least one. Which, of course, there hasn't been. Words mean things. Choose them more carefully.

umm, let's see, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Czeckoslovakia, East Germany, Romania, Bulgaria..... all occupied by the Soviet Union for most of the last century. Half of Europe was run from the kremlin. Poland regained its freedom in 1989. What are you talking about?

I don't understand the reluctance for a cease-fire. They say Russia will go and rebuild its military--- like Ukraine and NATO will just stand around with their hands in their pockets and whistle and wait. Ukraine could build up faster with NATO bringing supplies and TROOPS.
@MemekingJag12 күн бұрын
I can understand it for Putin, a million armed men coming back from a white peace ended expeditionary war to an awful economy is a good way to get yourself put up against the wall. If I had to guess, the main issue with a cease-fire for Ukraine would be that no one would be all that eager once peace has been achieved to stand up to Russia once again if the ceasefire break down. Economies recovering from the downturn due to the war will be hesitant to start sending money to Ukraine if Russia breaks their word, and that 3 day drive to Kyiv might work.

I’m sick of these so called experts who get on air and pontificate and ‘astound us with their intelligence’. These same so called experts thought the Russian army would walk to Kyiv in 2 weeks.

The Russian Army has lost between 600k and 800k men. The armour force has been bled white. By what measure has the West "Not stood up" to the "bully"? NATO won the war. Now is the time to make peace.

Putin has never changed the objectives of the SMO (except #4), 1. Demilitarization, 2. Neutrality, 3. Denazification, 4. Independence for the Donbass originally but now annexation of the 4 oblasts, after the referendums in Sept 2022.
