1) Napoleon didn't burn down Moscow; Russians razed their own city. 2) Much of the conflict took place on the territory of, and in combat against the people of, Ukraine. 3) It's a terrible example. People love to talk about the times Russia won, but not so much about their humiliating defeats - perhaps most notably against Chechnya in the 1990s, a minuscule republic with at the time less than 1 million people. 4) You also brought up World War I and II. Russia was *losing* WWI against Germany, even as it struggled in a two-front war, leaving many Germans on the eastern front confused and angry at their country's decision to surrender. And in WWII, the US provided as much materiel to the USSR as it provided to its own troops in the European theatre, a fact that even Stalin himself stated privately he could not have won without. And once again, in both wars, many of the people fighting against Germany were *Ukrainians*.
@sonnyirish3678Ай бұрын
Thank you for showing how little you know.When Mr Putin took over Chechnya was crushed.Can I ask how many Americans fought in Stalingrad and Kursk? Russia defeated Germany practically by itself.The allies landed in Italy in 1943 and never got out of Italy.You seem to have little knowledge that many of the Ukranians were fighting for Germany. As for the invasion of France,the British could not even hold a bridge in Holland in September 1944 without being crushed by a German army bled White in Russia.
@karenrobertsdottir4101Ай бұрын
@sonnyirish3678 "When Mr. Putin took over Chechnya..." what, you mean in the SECOND Chechen War? Amusing how you don't want to talk about the first one, when Russia was crushed by an impoverished microstate. ;) And your complete ignoring of WWI, the immwnse-scale aid from the US in Ww2 (modern wars over protracted periods are won on economics), and the fact that it was ***Ukraine itself*** doing much of that fighting and dying, speaks abundantly for itself.

It was not Napoleon who set Moscow ablaze; the Russians themselves burned their own city to deny the French any spoils. 2) Much of the devastation of war has historically taken place on Ukrainian soil, with Ukrainians bearing the brunt of the conflict. 3) Russia often boasts of its victories but rarely acknowledges its humiliating defeats, such as the one against Chechnya in the 1990s-a tiny republic with fewer than a million people at the time that fiercely resisted Russian forces. 4) You also mentioned World Wars I and II. In WWI, Russia was struggling and ultimately losing to Germany, despite Germany fighting a grueling two-front war, leaving many Germans bewildered and frustrated by their nation’s decision to surrender. In WWII, the Soviet Union heavily relied on American aid-receiving as much material support as the U.S. provided to its own troops in Europe. Even Stalin privately admitted that the USSR might not have won without this assistance. And once again, in both world wars, many of those fighting against the Germans were Ukrainians.

The inflation rate in Russia is currently at 8%. The interest rate for loans in Russia is at 19%. Russia is currently borrowing money at 16.16% (bonds 2039). Even a credit card offers better conditions. The Russians have currently a severe labor shortage. To attract men signing up as a basic soldier for one year the russian state offers up to $ 60.000. The average anual salary in Russia is about $ 14.000 per year. Adjusted for purchasing power, that would be like the US military paying young soldiers $193,000 in their first year. They will have to offer more and more over time. Russian spending on internal security and defense has increased by 30-40% annually since the beginning of the war. It now accounts for 35% of total Russian government spending. When the warehouses for old Soviet equipment are empty in about two years, this figure could rise. Military spending is part of GDP but it is spending on entirely unproductive assets. Military good need to be stored and repaired and will finally be destroyed. This kind of spending does not provide long term returns (like a school or a road). Russian weapons sales are going to zero. BUT: Until you run out of money you don´t have problems, you just had costs.

i'm afraid you are wrong about reasons of kursk operation. Ukrainians attacked russian teritory because of inormations about russian preparations to attack on sumy direction. Informations were given by western intelligence, not from one coutry but from a few. Because of that ukrainians had to make move first, to stop potential dangerous situation.

Finally, someone understands how dangerous it is for Ukraine to receive long-range weapons or satellite navigation support from NATO countries. It is rightly pointed out that Ukraine must be empowered to produce these weapons and acquire the necessary materials. Additionally, there should be a transfer of knowledge to enable Ukraine to utilize its own defense industry without direct NATO involvement, which could risk escalation into a nuclear conflict with Russia.

We must see the economic, technological and military “power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has (a declining) 144 million inhabitants (Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million, Indonesia 270 million). This is about 30% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands + Luxembourg. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t a economic power. This is the reason they can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they have is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is a mouse with a huge superiority complex and dangerous dreams. The path the megalomaniac mouse chose will be its downfall.

The reason for caution is that there are several powers directly or indirectly involved in this conflict who each have enough nuclear payload at their disposal to cause a catastrophe.
