The thing is as an average westerner, I have zero interest in Russia ,before the invasion of Ukraine it was regarded post Soviet Union as a backward minor European country struggling to modernise.Putin had put it back in the dark ages, got to feel sorry for the average Russian living in the back of beyond.

That trial of that American journalist was a transparent sham and I think that the US DoJ should indict the Russian judge and prosecutors and filing arrest warrants for them with Interpol (Red notices) while the US State department should slap sanctions on them under the Magnitsky act.

Best listen to the video. As a foreign journalist in Russia at the present time you have to be careful who you talk to, and what questions you ask. This is particularly true when you get involved in military matters, as was the case here. Perhaps he was passing information to the CIA, perhaps he wasn't and was just rather naive. We don't really know, and never will.

@@trogdortpennypacker6160 That does raise the question of how he acquired those documents. Where's trump. Putin is desperate to get his American lap dog back in power. He knows he can run rings round him and manipulate him again. Convincing trump Nato is bad for usa. Because trump is a genuine imbecile who didn't even know what nato was a few years ago, which is actually shocking stupidity. But it's worse than him being dumb. John Bolton says trump was way out his depth and clueless over geopolitics and statecraft, and knowing what to say, and more importantly what not to say to dictators that would destroy usa given the chance. Trump would not listen to advisors and believed he knew best, which is what makes him so bad.

Sweden just recently had experience of this "legal" hostage taking by Iran. A former Iranian prosecutor/executioner was lured to Sweden by expatriots in a honey trap. He was charged and convicted of multiple murders and crimes against humanity during the 80´s. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Iran jailed two Swedish citizens and convicted them to death. Swedish government pardoned the Iranian hangman and a prisoner swap was held. Right or wrong? I sure doesn't like it but do think it was the least bad option. Or do you go with the Thatcher doctrine - we don't give in to hostage takers? I really don't know the best course should be.
