Deeply impressive recording ! I've heard so many interpretations of the rhapsodies and I have to realize Mr. Pizarro is one of the few interpreters who do justice to these works being successful in balancing out the necessary pomp and the so-called faithfulness to the original while allowing himself less liberties with the text as others do. The reserved, nearly analytical (but not at all pale) interpretation cares for the essential temporal frame permitting the listener to "experience" the compositions (in contrast to much other pianists who let them only "flit past"). So to speak Mr. Pizarro is trimming these tropically growing rampant plants without damaging their nature. As a complete recording this interpretation excels by lucidity and transparency searching its sort.
@RandomButBeautiful Жыл бұрын
they were always meant to be improvisatory, it is the spirit of the music they were based on to be freeform and wild. It's just that the interpreters are not Liszt and they don't do it very well. The pieces started life as improvaistions by Liszt after hearing gypsy music in Hungary.

My eye will never see good again. The eye of him who sees me will see me no more while your eyes are upon me, I Shall no longer be. As the cloud disappears and vanishes away, so is he goes down to the grave and does not come up. He shall never return to his house, nor shall his place know him anymore. Let Him Take His rod away from me and do not let dread of Him terrify me. Then I would speak, but it is not so with me. Know then that God has wronged 'Me', and has surrounded me with His net, just as I was in the days of my prime mortgage and the friendly counsel was over my tent and the Almighty was yet with ME and the Rock poured out rivers of oil for the Me , generations... anyone who makes it through this set without mistakes should get some sort of award. But this was a fairly boring and ploddy interpretation of what is supposed to be fiery, wild gypsy music. Liszt was famous as an improviser and it was highly unlikely that he ever played these the same way twice. Legend has it that he spent a night hanging out with local gypsy musicians in their camp in Hungary one night. He was supposed to be performing a recital the next afternoon. He arrived late and instead of the scheduled program, started to improvise on themes he had heard the gypsy musicians play. It was from this that the Rhapsodies were born. This is not your typical recital fare. It was very revolutionary at the time to bring such music into the concert hall. It was rulebreaking music. So you have to remember this when playing the Rhapsodies: There are no rules. Except one, which is that you have to bring all of your wild passion and virtuosity and then some, and then double that and then turn it up some more and even then.... only Liszt could really do it properly.
