@@susana8929 Chopin didn't live long enough, as he died in 1849. Liszt lived until 1886, so his musical repertoire neatly spans from the very beginning of the Romantic era, when influence from the First Viennese School and Beethoven and Schubert were still very strongly present, to the end of it, seen in the advanced unconventional harmony used in some of his late work which almost reminds me of Bartók at times (i.e. the two Csárdás, Nuages Gris, Valse Oubliée, and Bagatelle sans tonalité). Not only that, he also had a strong influence on the French Impressionists which can be heard in the Anées de pèlerinage, especially Volume 3, Les Jeux d'Eaux à la Villa d'Este. Fun fact- he lived long enough to meet Debussy! Another reason is that Chopin pretty much never composed for the orchestra. His piano concerti are fine, but he never composed any larger-scale works like symphonies or operas. Liszt wrote thirteen symphonic poems and actually invented that whole genre, as well as two other symphonies (the Dante and the Faust; which I associate with the symphonic poems anyway) and various miscellaneous orchestral pieces. He even wrote one and a half operas (I say half because the second, which he began writing as an adult, was never finished), "Don Sanche" and "Sardanapalo". So, as much as I love Chopin (and Liszt also praised his work throughout his life), I think Liszt deserves that title more. I do wonder how things may have turned out different if Chopin had lived as long as his contemporary, though.

After my second attempt at playing Liszt for a school recital I left the stage, still mentally wincing, to polite applause. I knew I would never be up to his demands, so never again attempted any more Liszt. The young sure have a lot to learn. This collection was an eye-opener, amazing and so brilliantly performed. Thank you very much indeed, BC.

One is only born to play like this. No amount of practice will enable the non-gifted to reach such heights. The desire, the wish, the effort and all the investment in the World, will never let the uninitiated into this sphere of Divine participation. ... all we can do is wonder.

@johnny fox Exactly; I can never understand what lead someone to think in such a demeaning way. "No amount of practice will enable the non-gifted to reach such heights" he says, but I want to hear an example of any musician who made success through his "gift" as opposed to will and technique. I’m pretty sure Liszt didn’t sat on his ass the whole day instead of learning his way to the top just because some “superior being” though that he was worth of such greatness; super powers doesn’t exist, mate.

What really surprise me reading all the comments the people left in this page it's the fact that most of them in good faith assumed that Liszt himself it's the interpreter of his magnificent music. Totally agree in the high quality of the pianist, I ignore who is the artist but considering the perfection of his technique could be Mr. Claudio Arrau I'm just guessing.
