Bon Dieu!

The most earth shattering interpretation. Haitink is about 8 minutes slower as average, but the result is breathtaking.

Effettivamente il tempo è molto lento, pur essendo una marcia funebre.

Mabye a fraction too slow.. Arpad Joo is three minutes faster.

Haitink understands Bruckner, NOT Liszt. He killed this monumental piece and Liszt's other symphonic poems as well...way too slow. Kurt Masur is the man for this piece.

Masur is too fast, destroys the poetry.

There is no poetry in Haitink's rendition. It's dreadfully boring and destroys the thrust and emotional curve, which is supposed to lead to an ominous climax near the end. Liszt wrote this piece originally as his Revolutionary Symphony, yet utilized only the first movement to create this symphonic poem. It was intended to not only honor the heroic dead but also project the intrepid marching toward death during War, and the climax near the end should rise up into an angry fist-pounding moment of outrage, yet Haitink's mellow and sleepy interpretation destroys all of those War-like intentions. Haitink’s version could be a funeral dirge for a common man who never saw the ugliness and brutality of battle, but not for those who marched and died in battle while enduring the horrors and outrage of watching their buddies die at their side. And here is where Haitink misses the point completely.

I think Masur (and Haselböck) plays it way too fast, the tragic element is lost. Haitink is too slow, but it works better IMO. Joo is the most convincing, as often is the case. Thank you for your extensive Liszt-page, btw.

Some parts are indeed played a bit fast by Masur, and I'll agree that Joo plays the central "beautiful" melody extremely well, but he too losses the impact of the ominous climax with such a slow tempo. Liszt made clear that a work should breath and flow according to the emotion, and if Joo would have done so it would have been a stellar performance. And thank you for visiting the Franz Liszt Site. Much appreciated.

I think we discussed a lot 10-15 years ago. I heard Haselböck conduct Heroide in Raiding, you might have liked it, it was "Masurish". At least they play on period instruments.........
