Distillation of virtuosity, harmonic experimentation, and a long, long, eventful life full of joys and sadnesses. A translucent piece, and performance.

I almost forgot for a while how much I love Liszt's music and this video popped up first in my subscriptions I think in the right moment. Thank you for uploading this stunning performance.

Mr. Cohen is the first pianist who brings me this extraordinarily beautiful Impromptu of Liszt, and until this moment, this is still the best interpretation for me.

Thank you for giving us a glimpse of this early-late Liszt work. 1872, wasn't it? His inner brilliance is getting more profound in this period, more innovative and unorthodox in his musical direction albeit retaining his brand of virtuosity (albeit in a lesser degree). Cohen's performance is lightweight and carefree. But he carries the unique unusual modulations in a fashionable manner, the crescendo at 1:24 towards the cadenza is a highlight for me.

F# major/C minor Wtf Franz Edit: wow also whole-tone scale-ish cadenza (1:54)

Da Coco Nut Nut what does whole tone mean ?
@dacoconutnut95034 жыл бұрын
@@hadrieneverard8121 a whole tone scale is a scale built with tones separated by a whole step (like C-D-E-F#-G#-A#-C)
@gergelykiss3 жыл бұрын
The cadenza from 1:54 is built on a funky version of Liszt's beloved Hungarian/Gypsy scale with the two augmented seconds: B-C-D#-E-F#-G-Ab-B - with the occasional Db thrown in for good measure. It is a really funky scale, because normally Liszt would use an A# in place of the Ab here. It produces a very cool effect.

I have never before heard this piece, so, again, thank you for this one. But just listening to the piano used for the performance, wondering how it would have sounded on a piano from that era; I have actually played on a 1870-ish piano before, but I would never have been able to do this, since I can't play it to begin with. Has anyone found a recording of it on a piano from the era?
@Li-yt7zh2 жыл бұрын
Coming from thenameisgsarci's channel, THIS is the interpretation you settled on?!? Hope you realize this is a Nocturne 🤣 (& still the rubato here is ridiculously over-applied like Cohen couldn't bother with another take after testing and just wanted to get out asap)
@lukasmiller4864 жыл бұрын
This is well executed but I prefer Alexander Djordjevic’s performance because the piano sounds more soft and wholesome toned and he doesn’t rush the cadenza or the ending.
@jerry_moo4 жыл бұрын
Lukas Miller, agreed. Though I also like this performance, Djordjevic's rendition is very faithful and befitting to the subtitle "Nocturne" of this piece. Typical Naxos though, I found most of the tone for their piano recordings percussive regardless of the different pianists. Even though they have really good performances with great artists.
