The algorithm is clever. I had forgotten I watched this video 5 years ago and left a one word comment which I stand by. But my perspective has matured and widened a bit since then. This performance is so good that words become trivial irritations I could just sweep aside. He plays the music as written with finesse and a golden touch. Liszt didn’t make ladies faint by angrily banging the piano as if a weapon of war. He no doubt played with great aplomb, but interspersed with the delicate and smooth. The finest and best Scotch Whiskey is best had only in Scotland and drunk straight by the shot, down the gullet she goes, potent enough to grow hairs on a lady’s breast, but smooth as the smell of spring grasses, and giving a nuanced finish of agreeable complexity invoking cherished memories of good times gone wrong but made right again…Too often we hear Liszt played like the 1812 overture - and there are such moments to be sure. But one ought not neglect the grace and beauty that require a lighter touch I would argue is the predominate facet of Listz. If I were to play this piece, I would want it to sound just like we hear it here.

2:59 sry but I don't think the LH of the score doesn't match what Cohen's LH is playing?

This version of Obermann is definitely the best friend of Alkan's Quasi Faust. But the coda somehow lose some tension.

The non-rewritten ending (the orchestral one) is better. This pianist plays with too much pedal, and the lines are not distinct enough. The performance of the Stradal arrangement by Monti is more exciting.

I actually like the late Liszt more and more compared to the earlier stuff....The sonata of course being the flagship of all piano music ever composed.
