The prolific Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870) was a composer of a similar mould to Rossini, although rather fewer of his works have stood the test of time, being not so strong on personality as those of his great compatriot. But occasionally one of the sixty or so operas is given (Liszt actually wrote a fantasy on themes from Il giuramento, "Réminiscences de La Scala") and a few instrumental pieces remain on the fringe of the repertoire. With the Soirées italiennes Liszt was not as generous as he had been with Rossini's Soirées, and he chose just six to transcribe, successfully managing to select the pieces which differ as widely as possible from their pretty obvious Rossini models. Sadly, these transcriptions are quite rare nowadays, probably because they are absolutely unrestrained in their taxing technical demands-even the gentler pieces have fiendishly intricate details which render them immediately beyond the salon performer. Liszt’s method is of the same stamp as with the Rossini pieces, and the transcriptions themselves, depicting in turn the spring, a gallop, a Swiss shepherd, a sailor’s serenade, a drinking song and a Spanish gypsy girl, require no further gloss.
Keeping in mind the Italian theme of this video, I wish my European brothers all the best in dealing with this coronavirus pandemic that has hit them particularly hard. Everyone else, take care!

Andrei Cristian Anghel Hey i have a question, all of the Réminiscences are Fantasies on the themes of the operas and not direct transcriptions right?
@Sam-gx2ti
@Sam-gx2ti Жыл бұрын
@@erikrobinson2547 Yes, I don't know of any transcriptions he did but may have. "Reminiscences" is a genre Liszt invented which is sort of a fantasie or impromptu based on thematic material from a specific opera

@@f.p.2010 The source material here is Mercadante, and he is referring to the remarkable decorative filigree with which Liszt uplifts the original material, including some of the cadenzas which occasionally make these more akin to paraphrases.

"Il galop" reminds me of Liszt's transcription of the hunters' chorus from Weber's Freischütz S. 151.

Thanks for your kind wishes from Italian quarantine whose spleen is certainly alleviated by your music and all other KZbinr friends. Particularly welcome paraphrase on Mercadante unjustly forgotten although Liszt must have appreciated him otherwise wouldn't have made any effort about his music As it comes to why this wonderful piece is lesser known amongst Liszt paraphrase sets I think it's also because it's less flamboyant and may not attract pianists because ratio "applause's yield" / difficulty is unfavorable. This piece is mostly for connoisseurs....not a de salon one as you correctly pointed out
