Bravo Ronald Pries.

I'm very glad to have stumbled upon this video. The singer really means every word and every note that he sings. I felt drawn in, not as though I were having the song thrust upon me. It may not be the voice of a Souzay (my favorite singer) or of a Fischer-Dieskau, but it's the perfect voice for a true Hausmusik performance: warm and intimate. And the occasional glitches in the piano accompaniment only add to the sense of intimacy. Avanti così!

Die sich hier Gespielen suchten, öfter weinten, nimmer fluchten, wenn vor ihrer treuen Hand keiner je den Druck verstand: Alle die von hinnen schieden, Alle Seelen ruhn in Frieden!

I love the sensitivity and meaning you bring to this piece! The shift into upper-middle register can be really, really tricky at softer dynamic - I really wish I had an instrument like yours. Have you ever tried Schubert's "Lied eines Schiffers an die Dioskuren"? Very similar to this. I think you would like it.

Hi Matt, thank you! I love "Dioskuren" too, what a great song! I used to wish I had a voice like somebody else, you know, like Thomas Hampson or Jussi Bjoerling or Fritz Wunderlich. Then, I just decided to use the one I have. It's worked out ok. You can learn how to make that shift, if you want. You need a good teacher- someone who is more interested in beauty than volume. --Ed

in Seattle, WA. I went to music school @ Southern Methodist U. In Dallas. You have such a beautiful voice , why aren't you a voice major? Most singers don't do lieder anymore (just opera) but good singers all include lieder. put some songs on you tube. do Mondnacht by Schumann
@EdGabrielsen8 жыл бұрын
That's cool! I'm at Perkins, right next door to Meadows, going back to school at age 53! Many years ago I was a voice major at SMU, and also at a U. of Arizona and Sam Houston. Thank you for the compliment. I like Mondnacht. Last year I gave my first performance of Dichterliebe. I haven't posted anything on youtube for a while. What's your instrument? I really like lieder, and I don't have the voice for opera.
@normancascioppo14568 жыл бұрын
how did that performnce go? I used to live @ Perkins hall dorm. Went to SMU when it was hot shot school. organ major (&choral conducting). All the good teachers are gone, now. Congrats on going back to school. will you become pastor? I came back to U of W switched majors to piano because you get arthritis practising organ in cold xrches. did you study w/ Tommy Heywood?
@EdGabrielsen8 жыл бұрын
It was ok, but I liked the French and Italian on my program better. Dichterliebe is pretty difficult and I would need to sing it about 10 more times to really get it. Perkins dorm, sure. Tommy Heywood was here but not my teacher. It was 1983. I really liked Lloyd Pfautsch. Did you study with him? practicing in cold churchs, I understand. Im in the MDiv, so yes I'd like to go into ministry...if I make it through systematic theology! But my first love is singing. So, I will come and sing for you when I am in Seattle next!

This is so "authentic" - a beautiful, strong, Germanic, but reticent voice, some wrong notes on the slightly out of tune piano, a lot of rubato (I won't say too much!). Music at home, rather than in the hall. Considering Schubert was only really discovered after his death, this is authentic
