My D1000 has been functioning as expected for a month now and I'm SO glad to have it. Kryptonite served me well for the last 30 years, but grinders finally made their flagship product, the NY Fagedaboudit almost useless.* So it's the D1000 now for me. I also own an Altor SAF lock and have had it for three years. It, too, is VERY grinder resistant. However, at 13 pounds, very bulky, but with VERY limited internal space, it's a challenge to use. It's fine for the "locking up at the same spot everyday" scenario, but not for carrying. The D1000 internal dimensions match the Kryptonites I've been using and suffice to catch the rear wheel between the stays, or through the head or seat tube with ease. *Not totally. I have plans to "beef up" the four NY locks I own with supplemental steel pipe filled with concrete to thwart grinders. That way I can continue to utilize these quality locks and send thieves to greener pastures.
@TechExpertHub
@TechExpertHub Жыл бұрын
You are better off using a steel pipe then cut up smaller rings of steel inside. The steel rings inside will constantly shift as they adjust their grinder. If you spring load them everytime they cut new material will appear.

@@TechExpertHub Great minds think alike! I've thought of this option. Even using bearings to make sure the outer sleeves just spin. But one could cut sideways, or bash them to stop the spinning. Or cut sideways to make that less effective. I figure if the inner sleeve is filled with concrete, that will eat up disks and make a mess before the scumbag even hits the hardened shackle. We'll see.

The larger the shackle, the weaker the lock. This lesson was learned in the 80's. You want the smallest ulock you can effectively lock with. That's why the D1000 has so little room inside. Not done by mistake. That said, a LITTLE more room would be welcome by most consumers.

I've got a d1000 and have a motorbikr, issue is it won't go round front tyre so has to go around wheel alloy which if they were to angle grind they would just cut the spoke out and bypass the lock in seconds . The d3 once available will just about fit so much better in that respect

Just bought the Litelok x1 BSB version. Went for that over the hiplok due to more wider opening even if it does make it harder to mount to the bike. A lock that you cannot even secure it to something is just a heavy paperweight.

3-5 minutes to open the X1 doesn't sound like much compared to the 20 of the D1000, but I really think that is not particularly relevant. No thief is going to use multiple grinder discs on your lock if other less secure bikes are around.

I think the LITELOK X3 (the more substantial version would be more of a comparison (although it’s not launched yet) my concern is the X1 can be cut through in a couple of minutes , whereas the Hiplok D1000 takes considerably longer and that matters. We’ve all seen videos of thieves cutting through locks with grinders in broad daylight. So for me the longer a lock puts up a fight the better.

@@kfkwAL7 I was thinking about for bicycles.. but in both cases (motorcycle and bicycle) the threat is that they come in a van, pick it up and worry about the lock in their garage full of tools & with enough time, later. That you obstruct the turning of your wheel does nothing in this scenario, so that's why next thing im thinking about is the object you may secure your bike to, with an 'angle grinder resistant' lock. As far i can think there's only virtually 98% security (1% lost to lockpicking, and 1% to thiefs with the guts to grind in public for over 20 mins) if local governments start to invest in placing bike racks made of Ferosafe/Barronium as well

If your wanna park it while camping or on dirt buy a metal ground anchor that screws into the ground, then lock your wheel on top or sides it close enough sho the can't untwist it and would have to resort to digging out the anchor, on top of that with the lock around the wheel they can't roll it away and would have to lift it onto a truck, pair that with a hardwired gps and maybe even a 20$ movement alarm and that's guaranteed that your bike will be the last option

Grinder resistant locks are a step forward, but a determined thief in a private location, may instead opt to cut the pole, fence or rack the bike is locked to rather than wasting time trying to cut through a very grinder resistant lock. Park out where everyone can see, try not to park long, and see if your workplace will let you store your bike inside. Sometimes they will vandalize what they can't steal.

As someone who knows a guy that used to steal bikes, he said that he would look for whatever was the best bike with a lock that he could have off in 20 seconds. He said of these sorts of locks, if he was still a thief and he saw a rack with a £1,000 bike with one of these on it and a £500 bike with a lock that he could cut quickly he would just ignore the more expensive bike completely. Regarding vandalism, he said that professional thieves don't do that, you aren't getting paid for the crime so why waste time, and that only young scrotes are stupid enough to do this, but at the end of the day cut cables and slashed tyres are far cheaper to replace than a frame, so these locks still really do make a difference.

I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. I wish I could have given this more stars, but without the mounting system, it's just another heavy lock that I have to cart around. UPDATE: Increased rating to 5 stars because the seller offered to provide a new lock and mounting system. Really appreciate the attention to customer service!!

Not not anywhere near as difficult to cut through with an angle grinder. I’ll see if I can find the link to the cutting video

@@kfkwAL7 I found it don't worry ! It's from "Wayne locksmith" channel 12min long. He used 3 disks and 2min30s to cut it one side with a non-battery angle grinder. (he's also a professional user of angle grinder so he have good technique)

@@kfkwAL7 Good one too, it seems good enough as I have a second U lock from hillock that is supposed to be resistant for 2min to angle grinder (hiplock DX)

@@Poof57 yeah that’s the longest cut through the LITELOK I’ve seen. Much less resistant than the d1000 but better than most others.

Worth the money, imho. Especially for ebikes or scooters which are both quite expensive

With a lifelong warranty? Does that mean if your bike gets nicked they pay you for the bike?

@kfkwAL7 I wouldn't mind buying one for that price but my pushbike is worth £300 and now £1000 with a bafang electric motor on it, I find it hard to pay 25% of the full price just to lock it up safely, that is bonkers although in this day and age very necessary. For motorbikes I understand as they cost a few £££ but in comparison that would be 5% of the value of the motorbike to secure it. That is more reasonable in my opinion. Thanks for your reply mate 👍

@@mike-ology22 Broken logic, pay 25% of it's value or pay 100% when/if it gets stolen lol

@bobmarley2140 If I buy a lock for £10 my bike is secure. If I use a £300 lock, my bike is still secure. However if you lay for a £300 lock your bike is probably worth £1000, £2000, or £3000. If they can't guarantee that your bike won't be stolen then what is the point? If you have an expensive pushbike it will be insured anyway so it doesn't matter how much you spend on a lock

@@mike-ology22 If you buy a £10 lock your bike is most definitely not secure I've ripped those cheap combination locks off with my bare hands and for a start insurance companies won't even insure you on a high value bike unless you've got one of these diamond rated locks and if they do the premiums and excess are high bringing us back to the point of why these are worth it, the likelihood a thief is going to change cutting disks before someone catches them is low and spending 25% the value of something to protect that said thing is very sound logic

A good drill bit would be able to tear through it. As well as removing all the tumblers disengaging the locking mechanism.
