Some years ago, Tim McDonald, who was a broadcaster, turned up at the studio with tapes he had brought from Russia. Basically, they were from a newly discovered archive from the vaults of Gostele Radio, Moscow that had been opened up with the fall of the Soviet Union. Included in the vast collection were many tapes of live performances of great Russian composers, including many conducted by the composers themselves. But there was a problem. Russia is cold, and we got the impression that Russians were not always in the best of health. There was coughing, hacking, sneezing all through these tapes. It was like something from Monty Python. It was hysterical. But despite that, some of these recordings were incredible. Even some of the very old ones (dating back to the 40s) were stereo, recorded, I guessed, with just a stereo pair. But you got the sense of the hall and the occasion - wonderful. Yet, it is all the coughing that has stayed with me!

There's this album I've been listening to lately, called "Sing To God", by Cardiacs. I thought you might enjoy it. A lot of the songs have some ridiculous chord progressions I thought you might find interesting. I particularly like "Dog like Sparky", "Insect Hoofs On Lassie", "Fairy Mary Mag", "Bellyeye", "A Horse's Tail", "Manhoo", "Dirty Boy", "Odd Even" and "No Gold". They are seriously great songs that deserve more attention. Also, their earlier stuff is what I would call proto-Clowncore, since they would dress up as clowns and play these ridiculous, complex songs. Check out "R.E.S." and "Tarred and Feathered", to see what I mean.
