Out of all the fantasy films that came in the wake of Rings/Potter, Spiderwick Chronicles is the one I feel is the most underrated. Whereas so many other were bogged down with too much setup for sequels that never happened, Spiderwick was like "yeah, we're going to explain the world, tell a complete story, have an emotional heartbeat and be a thrill-a-minute all in less than two hours." And boy, did they pull it off.

Actually the Film was supposed to be based on book one and two only but then they figured they should round up the end (or maybe thought they would not get the money for following films) and then they just left out book three and four. So the end is sort of like in book five, but with more changes, to complete the film.

Personally I love the fact that they knew the dad wouldn't say he loved him there. It's my favorite thing in these types of stories where it's not "the magic fairies fixed our broken family" but "the magic fairies helped us process the problems in our family so we can accept it as it is" They didn't get their dad back, but the kids did end up with a different dynamic that no longer required the dad to come back and "save" his son

Besides being kinda violent for a kids' movie, it also had the balls to address divorce in a mature way and realistically depicted the hurt that the father caused his children by essentially abandoning them. Lots of other movies at the time were fine with divorce being depicted as something the kids just needed to suck up and get over for the plot to happen. Here the son lets out all his anger and confusion by literally stabbing his good for nothing "father". Kinda heavy stuff.
@tameriz1280
@tameriz1280 9 күн бұрын
Yeah, and it also didn't force parents back together. Most movies with divorcees would either go "suck it up" route or "aww, so they do love each other" route, which is really not ideal for kids actually living in such situations

I once met Holly Black, the author of the Spiderwick Chronicles. I actually met her not long after the movie came out. She's a super sweet person. When I met her, she looked exactly like you would imagine the author of the Spiderwick Chronicles would look like, but her personality was very bright and cheery. She has a very intense love for unicorns and Martha Stewart, which explains the presence for some of the cuter fairies in the book. Anyway, she was incredibly happy with this movie. I think she was more flattered than anything that her series received such a level of fame that a movie was made out of it. It was interesting watching her eyes sparkle when I asked her about her thoughts on the film. I, myself, was not a fan of this movie. It tried really hard to condense a full series into a single film and it reduced a lot of the plot, locations, and characters as a result. Still, Holly Black loved this film and she deserves nothing but the best in this world for the pure sunshine that she is. I hope she's happy with this remake.

as a fencer, it always makes me laugh whenever they use fencing swords in movies. girly's sabre is blunt and the tip is folded over. they're designed that way so that they're safe. there is no way known she'd be able to stab shit. the best she could do would be to smack the goblins in the head or maybe poke out an eye or two. it's like walking around with a flicky metal stick - it could do some damage but really it's not sharp at all. (also the way she's swinging it around is killing me but hey. hollywood)

I recommend the fairyopolis books to anyone who has ever dreamed of owning the book in the movie. Its basically a journal about fairies with interactable bits like envelopes/ letters. As a kid who loved the magical creatures and aspects of this movie, i always had the second fairyopolis book checked out. I believe the author has other books about different subjects like dragons and i think there's one about pirates.

I have an extremely vivid memory of going with my neighbors to see this movie, the mom was taking her son who was like 5 years younger than me at the time. And when we were walking out of the theater, obviously the stabbing the dad scene was pretty scary for fairly young kids, and this kid said, on the way out, maybe I should stab dad to make sure it's really him. I was like MAYBE DON'T IM SURE HES HUMAN

What is that show even about? Every clip I've seen is just some hospital employees kicking the metaphorical shit out of their autistic coworker
@itsanoformedawg
@itsanoformedawg 10 күн бұрын
@LowResCatExplosion he's a doctor, but he's a savant type character. Super smart, but terrible social skills and he can't interact with patients or fellow colleagues well. He has a tragic backstory involving a dead brother and an abusive father, he became a surgeon but he's constantly getting into issues due his social limitations, and they are VERY limited. Like this dude would not at all be a surgeon, doctor or anyone who interacted with patients first hand. He could be a consultant, but his social hangup causes issues constantly throughout the entire show. He's incredibly logical with the way he sees things and quite child like? It may just be the actor but yeah. I say all of this but I don't know the context behind the actual scene, maybe they were going to fire him or something, he was getting stressed out but couldn't actively show his emotions so he just started screaming and saying he's a surgeon as thats all he knows is true or something, idfk.
@itsanoformedawg
@itsanoformedawg 10 күн бұрын
@LowResCatExplosion I've only seen bits and pieces, and only the full first few episodes, and they are rude to him right from the get go. Everyone is just really mean to him becuase that's just thw hospital cut throat world, he isn't adapting to that because he's autistic, and people continue to constantly be snippy with him for no reason or, several reasons lol. But from the beginning, they treated him like crap. Like he came in late to work becuase the bus was late and the person walking with him said that wasn't her problem and he needed to be on time, and he's tism so 'routine routine routine' they just grabbed the most popular traits from autism and blotches it all together. There was even an episode where he kept misgendering a patient cuz she was trans and had a wiener. Like bro, you went through medical school. You learned about transgender and intersex people. *what the actual fuck* I'm sure at the end of the day no matter what he does is hand waved cuz tism...cuz that's what all of the other shows do too. It's also very odd from what I've seen how often people don't realize he's autistic. Like, trying to hold full conversations with him when it's clear he had no interest in what theyre talking about or get mad at his responses to certain things but irl, there was actually a study done that showed that neurotypicals treat nuerodivergent people differently even when they don't know they're autistic. They automactally sense something different and engage with them less. (Which as someone who is constantly wondering if theyre autistic, damn) So the fact that all of these people are holding one sided condos with this is so dumb.
@Ash-nc9bb
@Ash-nc9bb 5 күн бұрын
@@itsanoformedawg (admittedly I watched the episode ages ago) but I’m pretty sure it was said by one of the characters that they didn’t teach about trans people at medical school and complaining about the fact/ignorance (which was either made up because medical show inaccuracy or they just didn’t in the early 2010’s if you didn’t do a relevant speciality) Tbh the main reason I remember it is because I kept thinking why tf was no one telling him to leave and having a word about it in the hallway

To be fair, rebooting this one is more understandable than some of the other reboots since this movie was an adaptation of a five book series and from what I remember, only the first half-ish of the movie followed the books and then just started ignoring them and doing its own thing. There was a t least one book from which not a single plot thread made it into the movie. While I do really like this movie as its own thing, it would be nice to get a more faithful adaptation of the whole series (which I do believe is doable even at the eight episode count as they are very short books) although I’ll be honest, I don’t have much hole for it after seeing it’s a Roku original which I didn’t even know was a thing

It was actually all made by Disney but because of the strike last year they gave up the project and said they wouldn’t release it ever. It was going to be a Disney+ show but when Bob Iger returned to Disney he cleaned house. He wanted Disney owned IP only (Percy Jackson is published by Hyperion which is owned by Disney). Paramount holds the rights to Spiderwick and shopped it around after Disney dropped it and it landed at Roku.

According to the internet generation 16 years is like 50 years. They frequently cite things from 5-7 years ago as if it is a dozen or more years back, and 10 years ago is like 25 years plus, and over ten years is at least a half century past.
