I had a great time in Chiang Mai when I needed to get out of Los Angeles for a couple of weeks and re-examine life. It was hot AF but the food was good, things were fairly cheap, and it was easy to get the geography of the city down.

Ao and Duang! We used to call Ao "The Smile Lady" when she was running the stand by herself because we didn't yet know her name and she always had the biggest smile! We lived at Huay Kaew in 2013 and first met her then, then we visited again earlier this year (2018) and not only was she still there, but she remembered us after 5 years!!! Such a sweet woman! Thanks for this video, Steve - seeing The Smile Lady in this video last winter is what made me pull the trigger on the plane ticket back there earlier this year.

Quite a refreshing video. A lot of KZbinrs in Chiang Mai just shows coworking space or their fancy apartments and stuff that’s detached. It’s places like these geared towards locals (possibly for employees of the mall) that are the hidden gems. Thanks for sharing.

At Kad Suan Kaew, on the 3rd floor to the left wing i guess? Right next to Swensen and Black Canyon, there's a thai restaurant that is completely known only to the locals, no tourists there at all called ช.สเต็ก If you happen to go to this mall, I HIGHLY recommend that store, their food is amazing and it's really cheap. But don't get the "sukiyaki" if you can't handle spiciness, their sukiyaki is spicy even for thai standards and they're famous for it

It is a good selection of food and pretty user friendly for a non Thai speaking westerner. I haven't bought much from there. Maybe I fronted up too late? Prefer to get my food at Thanin market but this is also a great deal. I've been to that mall countless times and have got lost on several occasions. It's quite spread out with many dead areas on the upper levels. Better value than airport plaza from what I've heard.

My family lived in Huay Kaew Residence for a month, so Kad Suan Kaew was like our hotspot for everything. Although the mall is a bit old, everything's cheaper than Maya and we absolutely loved the place. That Tops Market that you didn't really like has a very clean food court with very obviously clean ingredients, and dishes start at 30 baht. Not bad at all even compared to street prices. We ate there a lot because we had a 4 year old and a baby in the tummy. Everything's cooked fresh on the spot and the place is air conditioned so we figured it'd be safer to eat there over the street stalls (which we still did but not as much). There's also an awesome bakery there on the other side of the escalator from your video, it's the small, non-flashy looking bakery. They have mini croissants and all sorts of stuff starting at 5 baht, and they keep selling out so you can keep buying up fresh bread that tastes soooo damn good. Thanks for the video, those were good times. :)

I checked that area out a few weeks ago in late Feb 2018. It was boarded up undergoing renovation. Hopefully it won't be too long and bargain meals can still be had when It reopens. It is easy to get lost in that mall. There are multiple escalators taking you to the upper floors. Used to be a great place to watch cheap movies early on Thursdays if I recall. I always head to the Dairy Queen outlet. Can't get that ice cream in Oz anymore.
