Thanks for posting this! Very useful. I've had success with straight laser prints up to Cone 10 and now will try Pronto Plates thanks to you. I probably owe you at least a dollar.

Thank you for a demo. I am new to ceramics and wanted to learn how printmaking processes could be used. As a printmaker, I would like to give you one little tip, if I may. I noticed that you dried the plate on the first inking up. Lithography works by water repelling the ink so that it only adheres to the toner, so instead of drying the plate and then sponging off the excess ink, leave the plate wet when you are inking up and there should not be much residue left to clean up, as evident when you are inking up the second time. Also, for lithography, a very stiff ink is usually used and rolled up thinly until you hear "a hiss but not a slurp". Perhaps, this may make your process even simpler?

Anastassia Manzon welcome to ceramics! Thanks for your comment, I usually don't dry the plate, I use a damp sponge to wipe it first so that the ink is repelled by the water. I'll have to quell with the ink more next time I do this process. Thanks again!

Waiting for Pronto plates and linseed oil to arrive from the States -any week now.🤣 Meanwhile, I'm preparing lamp bases, bagging them so they don't dry up. Soon I'll underglaze them soon in anticipation of the 'big transfer'. Thanks for your help. 😊

Thank you so much for your video...I must say it is the most informative video/information that I have ever found. Love the Pronto Plate...I just ordered it from BLICK, not sold in Canada...boo hoo! The filming of your video is also well done. You show what you are doing so we can actually see the consistency of your ink and the image you are printing. By the way, love your personality, smart, funny and to the point. Thank you so very much.

Great tips. Another tip, rolling out ink thinly will avoid the excess ink while rolling on the pronto plate

Allison. Perhaps adding Gerstley Borate to the Mason stain cocktail would help fix the color to the pot better, as GB is a flux and the stain may need some help with this, {Perhaps using the same amt of GB as stain)

Hello, what a nice instructual video. I however still have two questions concerning this technique: 1) When I tried this myself I found out my clay was to wet and kept sticking onto the pronto plates. Which type of clay could I use best. 2) And how does the oily ink respond to high temperatures while baking in the oven? Thanks again for your nice video.
@theartfactory449
@theartfactory449 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. You can use any type of clay, it works fine with cone 6...everything but the mason stain burns off. After it's fired, the mason stain is not totally adhered to the piece, once it's glazed, it is. Your clay doesn't need to be real wet...actually you want it to be a little drier. Good luck, let me know if you need more help.

Great video, and thank you for all the suggestions. I had a quick question regarding inking the image. I can't seem to get the ink to adhere to the image. The oil/ink just seems to slide around the pronto plate. When I use a sponge to pick up the excess, all the oil/ ink comes with it. Should I heat the image slightly? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm determined 😊. HUGE thank you. process.

Great demo. Im wondering if the plates can be pre inked up and left to dry completely for use at a later date? If smudge free storage can be achieved that is. I have limited space and it would be good to clear away the inking gear entirely to free the space for days of rolling clay. Im also wondering if hairspray or fixative would be useful either on the plates before use or in preserving the image on clay through until firing. Esp as i must bicycle my pieces to a public kiln service and smudging and breakage are inevitable. Thanks.

I have a question about the ratios linseed oil to ink. I've noticed that the ratios vary. Kristina Bogdanov uses a three part oil to 2 part stain ratio, but you say that you use the reverse 2 parts oil to 3 parts stain. Did I understand you correctly. Another person uses 1:2 ratio.I am thinking that stiffness and saturation might make a difference. Have you experimented with this ratio or with adding flux? Thanks

Tried paper, baking sheets, and now pronto plates. they are the bomb. One question- I was trying to print photos - black and white, and kept getting a speckled effect where it should be solid black. Had great success with pronto plate and line drawings. Is it normal to get the speckled effect when there is a solid area?
@kalatitati8795
@kalatitati8795 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, because of the paper surface... if you look very but very close to the paper you will notice little dots... but if the black area is quite big you can brush with the ink.

Hi, I am new to the pronto plate process. When you said, "toner" and "use a laser printer" is for laster printers" I always thought that toner is with ink jet printers. So I am a little confused. Hi again! Right. So I've fired some test tiles, but the images are smudgy. Too much oil? Not sure how to sort this. How could there still be oil after a low fire? :( PS. I didn't fire them myself.
@theartfactory449
@theartfactory449 7 жыл бұрын
Allison Roohi hi Allison, I find that this process is not going to give you super clean edges. A couple of things to consider is masking sure there is not too much water when applying the image and then after they are fired don't touch the image. Unlike underglaze, the ink basically floats on the surface, so when applying glaze, take care not to smudge the ink. I always use a heavier first coat when covering the ink after bisque. Good luck, please feel free to contact me. You can reach me directly at Tracy@theartfactoryswla.com

The Art Factory thanks very much! The kiln didn't burn the oil out of the ink. It smudged because I touched it! Crazy. I scrubbed the tiles with dish liquid and a faded image remained. I just don't get how the ink could still be wet after a low fire. As a printmaker, I think I'm not getting the ink mix exactly right, you know? Like, I know what I need for intaglio plates, but not this. Also, our studio is in a garage in New Orleans without air conditioning. It's got to affect the ink. Argh. Will try again!
@mercylou

The Art Factory oh, I also found that the image 'stuck' to the tile which was printed on a fresh underglaze as opposed to the actual clay. Not a bad thing, but made me think my clay was too dry.

The Art Factory I'm in Mid City! It's a shame really, because I'm getting such beautifully detailed prints. I tested applying a few clear glazes over top. Disaster!
