In an expensive defensive move that hopes to deter Russia from military action against Lithuania, a German brigade has been requested to be stationed in the Baltic country. This is big. In fact, this will be the first permanent deployment of German troops since the Second World War.

A German soldiers wife here. We will move this or next year to Vilnius. 2 kids, 1 year and 3 year old. We live in a house here with a big garden for the kids to play. We live in a very small village in the „woods“. Surrounded by mountains. But we also missed some things. Going for a walk straight and not always up and down. To ride a bike is impossible here, unless you have an e-bike. Und no water around. No sea, river, …. Nothing. No kulture. Just woods. Beautiful woods, great hiking tours. As my husband said we could go to Lithuania…. We saw 1 or two videos on KZbin. Looked at each other and said “yes” Your country is beautiful in every way. And Vilnius and the other towns are full of culture and history. And it’s no question to help these people. To defend Lithuania and to meet these kind people. The NATO is one team. Europe is one team. We must play together. Yes it means I have to probably live in an apartment. Giving up my house and my garden. My beautiful roses and flowers. But Lithuania has so much to offer. Even in winter. Finally enough snow to play. So Lithuanian 🇱🇹 …. We are coming. And are so excited. I can’t wait to meet you.

@@fragdoch-nicht1290 One of my grandfather's comes from Prussia too... he never got over it... but by now... the only solution is... to look ahead and let things lie in the past. I also do not think that Poland stole any land. That's an oversimplification. Regardless of how it all went down... Those territories are now Polish no matter what. The good thing about the EU is... anyone who wants to return to wherever... they can now. My grandfather visited his home village in the 1990s once every 3 years or so (and he got along so well with the people who lived there then). Germany and Poland are so historically intertwined now... it would be so criminally not in anyone's interest to defend Poland or the Balticum.

Well. Idk if you know it but according to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, Lithuania fell in Germany's zone of occupation. Hitler later traded it for Mazovia with Stalin. as a german kid of the cold war it was totaly normal to see foreign soldiers on daily base, as a soldier myself I saw the end of the cold war, the fall of the wall and the reunification of Germany. I am so thankfull to every single NATO soldier who did his tour in Germany, every single soldiers contribution to defend Germany was a part in a giant puzzle that at the end let the east collaps and end the cold war. The impact on Lithuania will be big and most of them will be very positive, every garrison city in Germany had a huge increase in wealth infrastructure cultural exchange, in Germany the allied soldiers came as winner and turned very quickly into NATO partner and friends... today the Germans go to Lithuania as NATO Partners and hopefully will turn quickly into friends. Lets hope that this contribution of NATO soldiers is the start of a new puzzle that lead to the collaps of the new threat coming from Russia.

As a regular German I have to say that I view this in a very positive light and I hope it will create a good relationship between our countries. I have been to Lithuania and have the impression that many Lithuanians are quite keen to have a bigger NATO presence there. The German military and Government have decade's and decade's worth of firsthand knowledge and experience with the presence of the US military being stationed in Germany. The Germans will no doubt use these experiences to reverse engineer themselves by being stationed forwarded in another country. Issues will arise, but if any country knows how to accomplish this establishment, it is Germany. Fantastic to see.

Ex British soldier who formed part of the hundred thousand plus British contingent facing the Warsaw Pact a lifetime ago based in a variety of garrisons in Westphalen. Keeping a forward element no mattter how small has always made good military sense and can also be good civil sense also. It will be a great experience for the German soldiers and their families. It would be a great idea if the British prescence in Estonia became a brigade sized permanent feature with families and perhaps a French equivalent in Latvia. That would give the Baltic region close to a complete Division of professional troops who would work and train alongside each other, learn the local terrain and the Baltic fold might sleep a little easier knowing they would not be abandoned if the worst scenario came to fruittion.

I've grown up with you guys. I lived close to ETR Kohima and I always loved riding my bike up that small hill and check out if you were on an exercise and trying to spot you in the bushes. In my experience, the British soldiers were fun to be around as a child. They were very chill and kind and we loved searching the temporary camps for stuff left behind once they left and went back to their main camp. The only thing not so pleasant was being woken up by 556 on a weekend at 7 or 8 in the morning. So in short: I dunno where you were stationed exactly, but if you were once at Kohima, we might have met :)

when we were in 1980"s stationed in Germany as a Belgian soldier , we had garrison cities with scools and very close social life with the locals. We had shopping centers but alos bought our livings in the local markets . I lived for 6 years in Ludenscheid during the cold war and these were happy days. Hard training too and high readiness (half batalion had to be on the move in about 20 min and on their way to their gathering stations for ammo , livings and others ... we then could go on to our battle stations at the East German border) Half of the battalion was on alert. at least once a month a squadron or every 4 months the whole battalion could expect an alarm and readiness test

As a German I'm totally okay with this. But it's sad that it's necessary. I'd rather just live in peace with Russia. They do their thing and we do ours. But Putin doesn't want so. 😔 I hope this ends in a deeper German-Lithuanian friendship. And in an exchange of cultures. The best we can do with it, right? Germans may seem a bit cold at the beginning. Prepare for that. 😂We're also known for being very direct and tell you right away what we're thinking. Even if it's not very positive. It can even appear a bit rude or offensive but that's not how it's ment. You'll learn it soon... 😁 But they also say that when you once made a German your friend it's a friendship for live. I'm glad my government decided to take some more responsibility when it comes to European security. It's questionable if we can rely on the US in the future like it was in the past. So especially we Europeans should stick closer together. Best wishes to all Lithuanians and the whole Baltics.

We aren't so different from you folks. Over 80 years ago, Lithuanians and Germans coexisted in Prussia, with Lithuanians even referring to it as "Lithuania minor" due to a significant Lithuanian minority in Prussian territory. Interestingly, the first Lithuanian and Prussian books were printed there. In much of eastern Prussia, people were bilingual, which likely explains why we share many commonly used words in the Lithuanian language. Matter a fact, we still have a German school in Klaipėda named after Hermann Sudermann.

I think for Lithuania it is a bit of security when there are NATO troops in the country. 5,000 German soldiers may not seem like a lot at first glance, but in the entire Baltic Alliance and the other NATO allies they can cause major problems for Russia. As a German, I can say from my experiences with US soldiers in the country that the economic advantage outweighs the "disadvantages" and that there is also a human gain for both sides.

Thanks for watching! I think you’ll enjoy it here! Hopefully a native Lithuanian speaker sees this and can answer your question better than I can. A lot of this channel’s viewers are Lithuanian and love discussing language. But I will try… I know there are some similar words and I remember one Lithuanian language teacher telling our class that it was easier to teach Lithuanian to Russians/Ukrainians due to similarities in grammar or sentence structure. But it is very much a different language with different roots. Many Lithuanians over 40 will speak Russian. I believe it’s because it was taught in schools as standard curriculum; things changed after Lithuania regained independence. Lithuanians under 40 are more likely to have English as a second language. Lithuanians will really appreciate your effort to learn the local language! At least it uses Latin script and not Cyrillic, so that is one helpful thing to get started.

I would say besides some grammar similarities, it is very different. It sounds very different. It's baltic language afterall, not slavic. There's no russian "Ы" sound in lithuanian language. Also lithuanians barely move/open their mouths compared to russian or such "drama queen" languages as portugese, spanish or italian (no offense my southern allies). Vowels are usually pronounced fast/short, for example english words "still", "fill", "hill", "know" sounds much more lithuanian than "steel", "feel", "heel", "now", if you get what I mean :)

As Lithuanian learning German for some time I could share that there are some similarities of an idea how to express yourself in German and Lithuanian, but the harder part is words, which are totally different from English or German. Also grammar cases sometimes are similar to German and sometimes not and that makes some confusion😊 It is likely that you’ll learn basic level, it gets harder with further stages 😊 I can’t answer about Russian language.

from what i explored the lithuanian housing market, it seems quite cheap. it seems like there is oversupply, as house prices are arround 10 times cheaper than in finland from my short exploration. ether way, more money is coming into the country, which will propably be good in the end.

I think it's a great idea for a bunch of reasons. But the timing and execution of the measure...oof. It's essentially going to be gutting the few really "combat capable" (in terms of manpower and equipment) battalions we still have in Germany. It's actually become a bit of a meme in the "military bubble". Support and enticement measures for soldiers and (especially) families are also somewhat unclear. And it's also confirmed that the brigade will not be a purely voluntary assignment. Meaning if there's not enough volunteers for the post, people can and will be assigned there. And while that may sound quite usual for say...US soldiers and is in line with Inner-German postings, the idea of permanent "overseas" stationing is entirely new for the Bundeswehr. And there's plenty of manpower issues already.

Really glad france and Germany are starting to step up more. They and uk italy spain france too especially will have to double defence spending to make up for u.s. if not leaving NATO they will spend less in europe and let Europeans sort there own security out whilst they focus on china. I think that's fair. If we all increase defence spending we're too much for Russia to deal with without u.s. support. However we need to increase arms production manufacturing and rapid increase of at least 3% defence spending in next 2-3 years. It will be tough financially for europe, but a must all the same.

This will be very interesting. Germans are not exactly explorers and colonizers, never were. Much. But they also don't like to leave their country and culture. Most likely a few German bier halls are already in the works at these locations. Pommes und hahnchen und currywurst und bier - imported from Germany. Although I must say the region East of Germany all has fantastic beer itself.

the cost isnt really an issue in this case ... the intention is to build up german military anyway, so transfering a brigade to Lithuania just frees up facilities here in Germany which then can be used for the build up of the Bundeswehr. So mostly its money we would spend anyway even if we wouldnt move a brigade to our partners. The only issue I have with this is that we wouldnt need all that buildup and foreign deployment if only we would have politicians with the spine and brain to fully support Ukraine ... so that the UA can deal with Putins regime to the point that russian imperial pipdedream ends permanently.
