SUMMARY:
🍽️ Come and taste Lithuanian food with us!
➡️ In this episode we visit Vilnius and Kaunas, Lithuania to taste the top 15 dishes - hand picked by the Lithuanian people and the Lithuanian tourism board. If you like European food, you won’t be disappointed by these traditional foods!
1 🍴 SALTIBARSCIAI (cold beetroot soup) -It’s interesting...especially what’s floating inside of the bowl! Annnnd there’s a small chance it may make your pink poop! ...don’t ask us how we know ;)
2 🍴 FRIED BREAD WITH CHEESE - This goes really well with a cold beer!
3 🍴 GIRA (kvass) - “A superior refreshment on a hot summer day”
4 🍴 CEPELINAI (meat-filled potato dumplings) - Cue the drama! Watch this to see a bad breakup.
5 🍴 TINGINYS (uncooked cocoa cookie bar) - Also known as Chocolate Salami (in Italian). Plenty of chocolate, but no meat.
6 🍴 PICKLED CABBAGE SOUP - One of the best cabbage dishes we have ever tasted!
7 🍴 KASTINYS (sour cream butter) - We already like butter, but adding herbs makes it even more delicious! Plus, who doesn’t like potatoes with butter?
8 🍴 KUGELIS (potato pie/casserole) - If you like potatoes and if you like pie, then you’re destined to enjoy this Lithuanian dish.
9 🍴 APPLE “CHEESE” - Looking for unique charcuterie board ideas? This is the perfect addition! Looks gross but tastes amazing.
10 🍴 BEER - Need we say more?
11 🍴 MUSHROOM SOUP - Soup in a bread bowl. Yum. Enough said!
12 🍴 HERRING WITH POTATOES - This is probably common in all of the Baltic states. And the only Lithuanian food that Jana didn’t eat. Watch to find out why…
13 🍴 BALANDELIAI (stuffed cabbage) - “Who said I don’t like cabbage?!?” - Brett
14 🍴 MEAD - The only item on our list that we could not find ANYWHERE! (To the Lithuanian people who follow us on KZbin, can you tell us more about this?)
15 🍴 SAKOTIS (tree cake) - 1. It’s cake. 2. Cake ingredients include 100+ eggs. 3. Shaped like a tree. 4. Delicious!

As an American of Lithuanian descent (pursuing my LT dual citizenship), the Cepelinia that they had was missing the key elements in their taste test... Spirguciai (bacon bits and bacon grease) and sour cream (which for Lithuanians is more of a side-seasoning around any potato dish rather than a dairy food). Although they were served on the side of the plate that they were served, they just ate the cepelinas ... well... 😁raw! The bacon bits and grease should have been applied liberally in a very unhealthy way (of course). THAT is what makes the difference! It is a common food of the people and should be eaten that way. Anthony Bourdain would have approved.
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. We always taste the food by itself first to get the “raw” flavor. Then we add the toppings or sauce and taste again. We want the whole food experience, of course!

@@AplinsintheAlps Secret ingredient is rye bread :) Pick the one that's most delicious on by itesel (it does make a difference!). Slice it to peaces, fry on a pan with oil (no need of deep oil frying) and THEN *rub with garlic*. We do not eat that with fatty sauce or cheese that often. Also white curd cheese is sad for not being included in that list as it's most unique and traditional of them all 😥 P.S. word @cheese@ means a method of making a product- squeezing. it does not mean an ingredient it was made of.

Yummy, thanks for the recipe! We can definitely find homemade rye bread in our home town, but I’m not sure we can find the same kind of cheese because cheese is very different in America than in Europe! I’ll let you know how it goes when we make this 😊

"Etno dvaras" is not the best place to eat cepelinai. I don't know what they do, but they always spoil cepelinai there. They also add pea shoots which is totally unnecessary and not traditional. I also haven't seen if you've eaten cepelinai with the sauce, you must eat it with the sauce, it's an integral part of the dish. It's better not to dip pieces of cepelinai into the sauce but to pour the sauce over cepelinai. The same with kugelis, you just pour the sauce over. Mead is not a popular drink in cafes, restaurants or bars but you can get it at almost every shop where they sell alcohol.
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps 2 жыл бұрын
Wow thank you for your amazing tips! Especially about how to pour the sauces and eat things - we always wonder if there is a certain way to eat something for it to taste the best. A few other comments mentioned buying mead in the store but we had no idea. Guess we will have to return to eat cepelinai the proper way and to enjoy a glass of mead! 👍😁

@@AplinsintheAlps Next time try cepelinai at Šnekutis in Užupis district of Vilnius. It's a cool place with local beer and some Lithuanian dishes. Senoji trobelė is a Lithuanian traditional restaurant in Naujamiestis district of Vilnius. They have lots of different dishes and cepelinai is better there than at Etno dvaras. If you have a chance, try baked/pan reheated cepelinai, it changes the taste completely. Ertlio namas is also a Lithuanian restaurant with a twist of fine dining. A bit expensive but really good.

how are Lithuanians not fat after eating this much bread? If you check the nutrient info you will find that we do not put that much sugar in bread. Without the sugar, there is no reason to believe bread is bad for you :) especially rye bread, which is traditional. I knew the fried bread is a banger, but I was surprised you guys liked kvass, I thought it to be an acquired taste, most foreigners hate it(in my experience). Nice to see you guys had a good time in my city... but now I want some kugelis (I put forest mushroom and cream sauce on top)

How interesting about the bread! We like the nutty flavor of bread, but the garlic rye bread is hard to beat! 😍 And yes the kvass was absolutely delicious!
