Digits increase along thermometers from the bulbs. There is one path of orthogonally-connected ODD digits starting in the center square (r5c5) and ending in one of the four corners. This path does not cross any thermometer.

Mark... I've been a fan of the channel for quite some time. As a suggestion. You're one of the best solvers out there. Don't be frustrated in your hangups. Even when you do get the break in... It's still incredibly ahead of most of us. Just celebrate the find instead of other self imposed goals. For me personally... The logic is more impressive than the speed. Promote the winning feeling above all because your skills are remarkable.

Agreed! I enjoy this channel because Mark and Simon take the time to explain their thought process as they solve. This is what helps improve my ability to solve similar puzzles. No need to apologize that you are "missing" things that we may see. I'm sure when Mark watches his own solves he is plagued with these "missed" steps. However, solving these puzzles live, in real time, and letting us see and hear how you approach them is what I enjoy about the channel. Keep up the great work!

You'll be pleased to know the puzzle was charged with two crimes 1st littering and 2nd loitering. Mark gave testimony that this puzzle stayed over its 15-minute a lot of time and must now be punished. It's hard to believe that loitering is the more serious crime that was committed by this puzzle. ... all kidding aside I like the thought that went into creating the puzzle and the logic you went through in solving it.

You are correct. Another mistake. He should have removed the 5 from the cell to the right. I'm surprised Mark didn't see the naked single 4 in the center box right then. So it's easy to see a 4 go in that cell, but removing the 5 was indeed incorrect logic.

Very easy puzzle. Once you have the 4 in R4C4 (it is a hidden single, after all), the only path for the snake to go without crossing any even digits or a thermometer is down, left, up, left, and up to the 3 in the top left. The 6 in row 6 and the 4 in column 6 block off the 5 (even though we don't know their exact positions yet.) The 6 in row 6 and the 4 in row 9 block off the lower right 3. The 8 in column 4 and the 6 in column 1 block off the 2. There is a 9 and 3 in column 1 so the other three digits are 1-5-7 on the path and that leaves 2-4-8 for the remaining cells. Solving from here is pretty straight forward. Very fun puzzle!

A nice puzzle, very much fun and shouldn't have been very difficult but I spent ages getting stuck on heartbreakingly, stomach-clenchingly obvious things. You know, like an 89 cell is very much disambiguated by an 8 in the same row... every puzzle is hard when you set yourself obstacles like that. (It also took me a shameful amount of time to even consider which direction our litterer can go; I just tried to will the central thermo to fix itself by I dunno, bowing down to my sheer resolve).

I think there is a second mistake on 9:35 when Mark rules out the lower left corner because he counts the green square as odd. By the same logic the upper left would be impossible as well

Something that Mark missed at 9:52 - since the litter path occupies 5 cells in box 4 that are all odd numbers, the remaining 4 cells must all be even numbers. Therefore r5c2 must be 2, r6c2 must be 4, and r6c1 must be 8

I was hoping the incorrect removal of 5 from r4c4 wouldn't impact anything later in the solve, but technically, he did use it at 10:38 to place the 4 in the cell, making that, technically, an invalid logical step too. 🙂 I say technically, because there was a fairly obvious alternative reason for placing that 4, seeing as it was the only place in the box a 4 could go (even when he made the original error). So it didn't really impact the rest of the solution path.

Like Simon I initially put off drawing the path (other than the 2 cells that clearly must be part of the path out of the middle). But actually, I later realized that the complete path can be drawn right from the initially given cells. Any corner requires a sequence of 4 odd digits to get out, but three of the four sides already have too many odd digits that are not on that path, so they're blocked by even digits. So it's immediately clear which of the 4 corners must be the litterbug's egress. The only next question is whether it makes a loop round the middle or takes a direct route, but again, you can only put 5 odd digits in a row, and in order to make a loop you need a row with 6 odd cells.

Yes. I just noticed the 4 has to be in the top left in box 5. That's what I saw last night that made a quadruple in row two. The 1s are placeable in box 1 (r2c1) because of the 1s having to be in box 3 (row 1) from the beginning also. That's gonna do it. (I didn't notice last night the 4 was placeable in the box 5 ) That surely is going to do it though. [[Edit: a 45678 quintuple actually (after that 4 then 3 in column 4 of the box 5 was put in) in row 2 up top I was speaking of ]]

Poor R4C4, such a simple opening overlooked and poor R6C6, resolved so early, yet left so late. These and the pencil marks I made for the path elimination (4 in column 6, 6 in row 6, and 8 in column 4) made my solve 100 times easier. I think his pencil marks were overwhelming him. I only marked the long thermometers at the start and that helped reduce the "litter", too.

I don't believe the logic at 9:30 is correct (the SW corner need not be an odd digit). The path to the SW corner is excluded by placement of the 8s: 8 in box 5 must be in c6, so 8 in box 8 must be in c4. Therefore, the odd-digit path cannot take all of r7r8r9c4, ruling out the SW corner.

Likewise a naked pair (or triple) is when the same pair (or trio) of digits are the only candidates for 2 (or 3) cells in a region (row, column, box), therefore they can be eliminated as candidates from all other cells in that region. Well, I did solve it, but my time was 1:15:10, so I'm probably the worst. But to my surprise I found the path very fast, but then had to fight for every digit, but enjoyed solving. But there's a question on the rule set, I made the assumption that also the "store" itself would be odd, I did not find it the way Mark did. So, depending on how one reads or understands the rules, I may have made an illegal assumption there and unintentionally made a bifurcation. But that's a question the setter of the puzzle would have to answer. Really liked the puzzle anyhow, a challenging level of difficulty for me, kind of the edge of my proficiency, but I did it. On a side note, don't understand why Mark colored the path red (or orange), I used green as that was what the store and corners already were, so why use another color?

That was a fun one. Based on what you did to this Mark, I can only assume you are the butcher in this town. Perhaps you're also moonlighting as a chef, because you certainly made a meal of it. So many things were missed today it was painful viewing. I daresay you've got a lot on your mind at the moment, with the kickstarter adding to your existing workload, so you can be forgiven for losing focus.

@@Moksoory1 Which allows us to deduce... ... Simon's videos get more views. Maybe because his videos get released first? Perhaps some people only have time to do one puzzle/ watch one video a day? Maybe the timing of Simon's videos suits more people? Or, granted, maybe he's more popular. But to say the numbers don't lie, and claim they show EVERYONE prefers Simon's videos is clearly nonsense. The numbers don't lie. They say more people tend to watch Simon's videos.

A nice puzzle. I’m not sure the hidden path added much to the puzzle as it was fairly easy to work out the only possible path before embarking on any sudoku. It would have worked better if there were multiple possible paths well into the actual sudoku solve. 15:14 for me.

The path was pretty crucial to finding the solution. I would say that finding the path as the key to capturing the criminal would feel unsatisfying. Good thing you analyzed the entire crime scene to properly prosecute the litterbug!

IMHO starting with the thermos made your solve a bit "littered" with numbers. Missing obvious doubles and triples is not Mark's usual style of solve. I started the solve on the path then added the termos it made the solve cleaner and faster.

Not too difficult today - you can rule out most of the escape routes quickly, and knowing that route is "odd" makes for an "easy" solve - 23m50s.

Interesting choice for the colours... I just used green for the route (as the greens are all odd anyway - the givens at least), and anything I ruled out I coloured red. That made the route pretty much self-evident.

At 9:35 I don't understand why you rule out the path going to the lower left since the lower left square is (as proved later) an even digit (so the bottom row COULD have 5 odds and the path was viable). Any help?

If the path had exited in the lower left, then the corner square would have had to be odd, giving six odd squares in row 9. It could only be even in the final solution because the path didn't exit in that corner.

Oh, never mind, got it : 5 can't be there not because it's a triple but because of where it's placed on the thermometer. The way Mark expressed it was a bit misleading, I'd say ^__^

Incomplete instructions imo. When the rules state that the path is made up of orthogonally adjacent odd digits that ends in a corner, seems to me it's clearly implied that the corner must also be odd inclusive, as it is part of the path. Right off the bat that breaks it because it automatically places 6 odd digits in a row to complete the path. Should say something like "until it reaches a corner", not "ending in a corner".
