What is littermate syndrome and how can it be avoided?
Littermate syndrome occurs when two puppies from the same litter grow up together and develop such a strong bond that it makes it difficult for them to properly socialize with people and other dogs.
Although this sounds very cute, dogs with littermate syndrome will exhibit behaviors such as excessive barking, whining, anxiety, and other destructive behaviors when separated for even a short amount of time.
The best way to avoid littermate syndrome is by adopting one puppy at a time and actually adopting puppies from different litters.
Dogs are pack animals and although it seems like you might be separating them from their pack, you actually become their pack!

Just because you was lucky, it doesn't mean that others dogs can't develop this condition. I have dog bad socialised from abused environment, which spent 5 months just with same age or little elder dogs but no with people and I can tell you that this dog has got issues not just with engagement but he even isn't eating if I am not around.

Littermate violence is real. I recently adopted two 8 month old brothers. One was returned after 3 months from a home, the other at age 8 months had never left the breeder. His ears did not fold so he was less desired! He did not know how to walk on a leash at all or toilet trained. (Bad breeder?) The breeder did not know why the one brother was returned for a refund. I think the breeder lied to me and that the brother was labeled a one dog home type dog. My guess is he was dominant in his first home. He is trained to sit and stay, fetch, and house trained, but is completely deaf after he attacks his brother. I had them neutered 4 days after getting them. They are 10 months old now. The dominant brother that was returned to the breeder attacks his brother. His brother responds as violently. They play all day, unsupervised OK, but when walking in a narrow hallway to go outside, a random attack by the dominant brother and a outrageous fight begins. The dominant dog food dominates, and all toys. They are able to chase each other all day outside with toys, but not inside. The submissive one gives in and hides in his crate or under the bed to avoid his bully brother. They can play inside fine, and at some point the dominant brother gets nasty. I make him wear a light muzzle when going on walks or a 1 mile run together because he can get excited and start a fight. I put a muzzle on the dominant anytime I think they are too excited about anything. I have several bites from separating them. This is not normal loud fighting like terriers. It is like a dog fight for sports betting on which dog will die. I had a brother and sister previously and they would fight and sort it out without intervention. It looked and sounded dangerous, but they would stop. I am close to rehoming the dominant dog. I would never return either dog to the breeder, because they have 13 personal show dogs already and they have family health issues and are not running a good Wire Fox Terrier kennel in Chesterland, OH. I may use a WFT rescue or a local breeder to qualify a home for the dominant dog, but they must have a dog-door, a fenced yard, family, and no other pets. It will be heart breaking, but I am close to saying goodbye to the bully.
