Dear Devin, stumbled upon your cover in my KZbin recommendation. The original by Jacob is really a special song, and I was mildly surprised by what a beautiful and competent rendition of the song you made. You captured the essence of the song beautifully you sang exceptionally well and your multiinstrumentalism in combination with your editing skills made this a true gem. How do you not have many more subscribers, you singing woodlogger? Made my morning. Thanks for putting that out to the world, you have one more subscriber. I send you hugs and wish that you successfully continue the journey whose first step I was blessed to witness here. I can't wait to hear more from you. May your channel ever grow. Love from Germany.

Wow thank you for these glowing words, it's so great to have your support! I've been lurking for many years, tried to get into film & game composing, had kids, tried to start a low-tech intentional community (with lots of wood splitting hah), but have finally come full circle back to music and really want to make a go of it! Thanks for watching and subscribing! (From a fellow soundtrack nut)

I am so glad that Jacob recognized your rendition and gave it such glowing praise. You must be grinning from ear to ear. I know it can be hard sometimes to venture down an untrodden path and face your insecurities and doubts. Staying put in the comfort of your every day may seem ever so tempting. May you find the affirmation and strength through your audience's support to venture further on the path you have begun. I can't wait to see what wonders we might find on your journey. Glad you took the first step onto a hopeful wonderful musical adventure, we gladly take the journey with you.

Wow thanks!! I used to sing around the campfire growing up and stuff, but never seriously paid much attention to it, just focused on instrumentals, and so my voice was always really limited in range, confidence, and depth/quality. I started doing vocal exercises intensely about 6 months ago and it's made a massive difference, to the point where I finally felt ready to go public with it on this song! :D More videos coming up 👍

Haha spoken like someone who spends all day trying to figure out harmonies by ear! Thanks! 🙌 Your Hyrule in Half-Light album sounds amazing, Marcus, looking forward to diving in more. I transcribed a full orchestral Zelda cue a few years back as an exercise, and dang was it challenging. I was building up the full orchestral template setup with Cubase, VEP5, East West HS and HB, Spitfire Perc, Berlin Woodwinds, etc. and was trying to get into film & game composing. I really struggled with RAM issues and buggy software (this was 8 years or so ago) - I'm hoping you're having an easier time of it than I did. Mad respect for what you do!

You , like Jacob, are a very rare breed. This was insane. It blows my mind how so many instruments are played and all played VERY well. I love the jump into Lotus position. That was super cool to watch. Edit: day2 watching/listening to this. I actually like this interpretation better than the original. This needs one of those hour loop videos. Truly, this is astounding in its vision and execution, arrangement, performance and editing! And I've played guitar for 30+ years, as well as some piano and EWI. Listening to the fills he uses on each instrument to adorn the melody reveals his tremendous taste and skill. Not to take a thing away from the modern genius that Jacob is, but compared at the same 400 subscriber point back in his past, this is a WAY larger realization than Jacob was having at that time, BUT, we benefit from standing on the shoulders of giants! If Devin stays steadfastly TRUE to this path, he will not only build a massive following, but most likely open his own doors to realize his own music and become a touring artist. I'm sure Quincy Jones would appreciate listening to this arrangement in a similar zone to when he first heard Jacob. It's clear that Devin has put a LOT of heart and effort into learning so many instruments and in arranging this to say nothing of the video editing and aura applied to his vision for it.

Of course nobody touches the magnificent Jacob.. and this is one of his finest songs ever... But you are a WONDER, Devin.. I was most blown away by how, as a 'newer singer' (per your admission) you were able to mimic Jacob's haunting vocal tone. Nice work.. I know how much production time this was.. as a producer/arranger/performer/one-man-band myself. Nice work!!!

Thanks for your thoughts, I really appreciate it! I think it was around 40-50 hours to do both the recording and the video. Haha you should see how many vocal takes I had to do! At first I was REALLY mimicking Jacob, British accent and all, vowel pronunciation and all, which was largely on purpose b/c I've never had a vocal lesson and used it as an educational experience, but that didn't sound anything like me so I dialed that back. But yeah I really like his resonant almost operatic leaning vocal tone, as well as his expansive range, and that has been an inspiration! 👋

Dude, Devin. This song by Jacob hits me on so many levels already, but your new, fresh, marvelous version really crushed me on a new level. I adore your creativity, I adore your absurd TALENT and I adore your vision for reimagining this masterpiece so breathtakingly. You really made this piece your own. I've watched this at least 20 times by now and it still manages to make me cry. One of the reason your version really touches me is because I think I see myself in this work, or the version of self that I would like to become at one point. It is not even the sheer brilliance in your performance or the technical versatility in your playing as many different musical instruments, I think it's more the courage that speaks out of your cover, the courage to express yourself, your feelings and your identity in such an honest, WARM and inspiring cover. Thank you so much for what you did with this piece. PLEASE continue to make music. You already left a deep impact on me and - if I'm not mistaken after reading a lot of comments - also on the lives of many other listeners. I would love to give you a virtual hug!!!! WOW AND JUST WOW: BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK OF A GREAT TALENT AND GIVING CHILLS! You got the chords, you got the techniques, a wonderful voice, perfect synchronisation of all instruments and harmonies- yet its in your very own pace and you added your very own character - so that it is not "just a cover" but there is something new and interesting to it. Love it and hope you create more of this!*

Beautiful version of a beautiful song: I'm so grateful to have been privileged to live at a time when Jacob wrote this masterpiece, performed it so perfectly and now Devin has taken it and reworked it so amazingly. Thank you both!!!! (I can't find the adjectives.....superlative!)

Wow thanks Jerry! I've always had a myopic instrumental focus, but as I started singing more this year I was still finding myself hiding behind lots of reverb and double-tracking. This was a great exercise for me in trying to break out of that fear! Thanks for your music too! ✌️
