This kid gets to the question of culture and separation so simply. It’s like an average Mexican kid wishing he was as athletic as the black athletes on TV, or a white girl wanting to have as soulful a voice as a black girl from the south, or a my number of things from other cultures/ethnicities one would like to experience. This is the “Quesadilla”. The fact that there is something so obviously valuable that is not part of our everyday cultural lives. Something we wish we had in our own lives daily, because we so instinctively understand and feel it’s value, that a child understands the separation and experience extreme pain at what seems illogical. The mother is right in trying to help the boy understand that it’s just not that simple. Culture is a complex and yet strangely intuitive thing. And yet, we should all be able to appreciate the distress in this child’s voice, as we come to the sad conclusion that the human experience is wide and diverse, and we will never be able to experience it all. Not even if we only focused on the obviously good and delectable good, the “quesadilla” could we hope to experience it all. The irony of course is that the Mexican diaspora increases, and Hispanics are relatively open to interracial relationships. So this child could probably get himself to be a part of Mexican culture.
