Before he died, he wrote a treatise where he expressed his feelings that God had justly allowed for Byzantium to be conquered because of it's late impiety and immorality towards the faith. So for Saint Gregory V, the loss of Byzantium was a just expression of God's power and merciful love toward the Orthodox, reminding them not to be idolatrous about empires, armies and governments. He did not advocate for a violent expedition and conquest to "reestablish" Christendom, and only expressed our calling to be martyrs and followers of God's providence.

It's capital in Constantinople was already the capital of the Late United Roman Empire. HRE's core was in Germany- lands never owned by the Romans. They theoretically controlled italy but in reality Italy was self governing which led to the rise of the Republics of Venice and Genoa, the Papal States and other Italian city-states. While the southern half of Italy- Magna Graecia- was controlled by the Eastern Romans for centuries. They even controlled Rome for two centuries after its reconquest under Justinian. Unlike your HRE impostors, the Eastern Romans actually followed Roman law, had the Roman Senate, Roman traditions, Roman insignia, followed the Roman style of organised warfare, had advanced technology, built great structures, etc. Lol what a clown.

Instead of just foolishly waging wars after wars with Sassanids, if both the empires made normal relationship between them and focus more on developing thier empires , they could have withstand against the Muslim invasions. Then both empires could have lasted long and Their ancestral land, religion and culture could have existed today. The Byzantine - Sassanid centuries of wars are one of the biggest mistakes of history for both the empires which proved to be fatal.
