5:39 - I prepared two Zetec Rocam 1 litre engines with the tiny Eaton M24 blowers. I operated those at 18000-19000 RPM to stay within the Eaton specs for street use and occasional track days, although some folks used to push it at 22000 RPM, which seriously pushed them towards the limits of the bearings, but for racing use it is ok. The Eaton TVS R410 (similar size to the M24) can go all the way up to 24000 RPM on the Eaton datasheet.
@AutomationGame9 күн бұрын
Yeah, I modeled everything off the Eaton superchargers and used their maps to aid figuring out how to generate ours :) you sure can push them higher than Eaton says you should, not great for the warranty, but hey, more performance!

I might just have to put aside my beloved carb ohv v8s for a while as I give superchargers a fun shake down. Really curious how the hell I'm going to use them on economy daily drivers. Just imagine how good a boxer 4 will sound with a supercharger whine. Hope they aren't too much more expensive than just whacking on a turbo. Very excited for the new update! Glad that there's still some few early access games that keep getting steady updates while also being interesting to play in the meantime. I know this has nothing to do with this video, and that it's a very niche thing to implement in the near future (I suppose), but I saw the news that they're making new units of the Bentley Speed Six, and I was wondering (and looking at Morgan models, too), if there could be some sort of retro-prestige demographic, for extra exclusive cars like these special editions that use older bodies, and there's no penalty for using a 1955 body in 2000, for example.
@AutomationGame11 күн бұрын
We discussed that internally a few years back and something like this could potentially be done in a grand campaign setting where you designate the original model to have a successor, and depending on that one's sales / quality you'd get a boost to desirability for the new one. However, the retro modern stuff doesn't work like that due to safety regulations. You can't take the old body and build another one of those :) usually they have to be beefed up significantly to pass modern standards.

twincharge turbo/centrifugal works if you use the centrifugal supercharger as the large compressor in a compound setup, use a very small turbo for quick spool degisned to run out of compressor flow, and use the higher flow of the centrifugal to help the small turbo keep up by operating at lower pressure ratios. still has lag but better than a bigger single turbo.
@AutomationGame11 күн бұрын
Yes, that would work switching roles :) although not quite as well as with a blower in the intended role.
@Mitchd0310 күн бұрын
@@AutomationGame It's probably not the best way to do it, but it might be more compact/better packaging, likely cheaper to manufacture, and surely quicker to assemble when compared to compound turbos.
@AutomationGame9 күн бұрын
No, if that was the case then manufacturers would have done that, and there has never been a single production engine using that setup you're proposing. Compound turbos are used for Diesel engines, and twincharging has been done both with turbo first and supercharger first for petrol cars. :)

God damn this looks amazing. I've been desperate for the superchargers for a while now. Feedback for another part of the update, but the lamda = 1 title might want to be revisited. Whilst it does describe exactly what is happening, it doesn't seem the easiest to understand. Had I not watched the videos I'd likely be more than a little confused, and that's likely to be true of friends using the game to learn engines as a whole. The improvements to the calculations also seem great additions. I assume diesels and/or 2 strokes are a long way off if they are ever coming? Part of me hopes once the current calculations are really hammered down it would make it relatively simple to get the diesels at least in order, but I also know it's not as simple as just throwing numbers into the same equation and calling it good. Or is it more likely to be a game of 4-stroke gasoline engines with no foreseeable (the important word) intention to expand the scope beyond that?
@AutomationGame10 күн бұрын
Oj! Haven't seen you in the comments for a while! Lots to play around with indeed. Setting up a nice supercharger tune is and feels quite different to doing that for a turbo. Compound will keep you busy too... Yeah, the lambda = 1 title is for the emissions optimization slider that previously basically had no indication as to what it is. I couldn't figure out a better description for it and hope the cryptic title (to 99.9% of people) will make then click the description to have a read - or look at the fuel map to see its effects. The tricky bit is that we do have different fuel types that have AFRs that are wildly different and so far I've not come up with a better title! Maybe someone figures out something more appropriate during open beta. ':) Yeah, the FAQ is still accurate on those (link in description). Diesels are viable but lots of work and not planned to be in Automation 1.0, but may come as a DLC after that. The calculations for Diesels would have to be quite a bit different due to how they rely on self-ignition and that point varies depending on the combustion chamber environment. We joke that we could add Diesel on 1. April as the RON 25 fuel type it is and say we've implemented Diesels... just for people to blow up their engines with knock. :P Most people think that's how easy it is to be implemented. The much slower flame front speed is somewhat easy to implement with a fudged fall-off in combustion efficiency towards higher RPM. Still would likely be ~18 months of work all up, with a whole new engine designer for Diesels. So not something we'd want to do just yet! Cheers!

After that I got fascinated by the idea of being able to increase the performance of the engine by just injecting water in it! if you place the injector in the airway after the air filter you can cool the incoming air by vaporizing the water and that cooler air is more dense ceasing less likely hood of knock happening in the combustion chamber Wich means tighter ignition timing and slightly higher boost pressures! So yeah I really like the idea of this. you can even increase the power output of NA engines too ( if your knock limited somehow ) and because you're cooling the incoming air you can increase the AFR ratios without being worried about knock so you get better gas mileage too.

The Oldsmobile Jetfire in 60s had that... which was a very bad idea xD "It used a special tank filled with ‘rocket fluid’, a mix of methyl alcohol and water. The system needed to spray it into the intake air stream to cool it and keep combustion temperatures lower."

Extremely interesting video and the update is looking great! I never realised the intercooler could be disabled either - is this a sensible option at all when using turbos?

If you have a tiny engine bay and you only want to run low boost, then it is a valid choice, yes!

Or if you're going for realism with early early turbo builds such as the 1962 I think oldsmobile jetfire or the chevy corvair

So excited for this! Couple of questions: 1) Will we be able to compound more than 2 turbos together? I want to live my dream of having an engine bay that is 50% turbo and 50% engine, I might need a 4 turbo compound system for this. 2) Could you run twincharged as a compound setup? You mention disabling the supercharger after we hit some pressure limit, but couldn't we do the same thing as we do with the compound turbo and just continue to compress air that has already been compressed?
@AutomationGame11 күн бұрын
Neither will be possible, no. We had to draw the line somewhere for complexity's sake and that line is two stages - they can either both be turbochargers, or a supercharger and a turbocharger!

I know one thing I'd like to see for the turbos would be the ability to tune the Trim and A/R ratio, as well as the Inducer and Exducer sizes separately for both the Turbine and Compressor. I've tried making IRL turbos in this game, and I can get close with the current options that are available, but not exact. Maybe have it like an advanced mode toggle for more experienced people.

In the parameterization those are not individually broken up, so that is not possible. It is all a big fudge for their effects, because otherwise you'd need a full simulation of the airflow through it, which a) I'm not capable of making and b) wouldn't benefit the average player at all. :) Cheers!

In the previous dev update Killrob mentioned a change to the strength of the bottom end (to cope with the larger displacements, especially in the early game), so how is that going? Are we going to hear about it in the next dev update? Because early game internals really need a buff, especially for large engines.
@AutomationGame11 күн бұрын
Yeah, I'll talk about that in one of the next updates as I've now finished those calculations and they are ready to be implemented :)
@dolphbro453911 күн бұрын
you guys should also add a way to decide where the intake and exhaust manifolds are setup somehow! such as a hot v8 setup or maybe with something like a datsun a10 engine from the cherry where it has the exhaust and intake on the same side of the motor. can not wait for the new update though.
@AutomationGame11 күн бұрын
It might not look like it from the outside, but the intake/exhaust/piping system is by far the most complicated art in all of Automation; there's just no way to open that up to players sadly.
@dolphbro453910 күн бұрын
@AutomationGame well. My goal wouldn't be to open it up for players to do whatever they want. Im talking like. You guys could impliment some sort of set in stone system for the stuff. So you can have like 2 port intake manifolds with 2 port exhaust manifolds that are on the same side of the motor like the old ford motors and stuff like that. Idk. It was a idea i had cause i always try to make real engines in the game and some things arent all the way perfectly up to par like that yet. Either way thank you for considering my idea even reading my comment.

I really love this updates and the way you are making the game as realistic as possibile. Are you planning to improve the sounds of the engines (new variables, new parts) like Titanium exhaust or adding compressor surge with the beautiful "stutututu" sound?
@AutomationGame14 сағат бұрын
Our hands are tied with regard to our engine sound system for the foreseeable future, unfortunately. Exhaust materials have very little to do with the sound, despite what many people say, and you really, really do not want compressor surge in your turbocharger. ;)
