Carol and Gerry lived across the street from me at 2635 Brown Street in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn when I was 9 years old. They had a maid or a babysitter. A black young teenager named Eva. Eventually she recorded a song they wrote called 'The Loco Motion'.😊

This looks like it was from Shindig! A great music show in the U.S. 1964-66, and I recognize the Blossoms with Darlene Love doing the backing. So many great artists and songs on that show, and this is almost certainly live!

When I was about 9 years old, there were two songs on the radio that I was absolutely obsessed with. One of them was this song. I still love it. The other was Duke of Earl. As others have mentioned, you should listen to the cover of Locomotion by Grand Funk Railroad for comparison. They stayed true to the song but gave it an updated 70's flavor.

My mom taught me this back in the 80s..lol. ditto, Ponytime, Mash Potato, Bunnyhop,The Twist, Let's Twist Again, Land of 1000 Dances.... mom loved to dance, so did my dad. They were in high demand at dances by my friends...think they taught all of us. Sadly both were immobile in their last years. They were a lot of fun.

Yes, as mentioned, this was written by Carole King when she was 19, along with her husband Gerry Goffin. Eva was their baby sitter. This was recorded in 1961 and released in 1962....way before Kylie whatever her name is. Interestingly, the song was written for Dee Dee Sharp. Little Eva (Boyd) recorded the demo and Dee Dee passed on it so it was re-recorded and released by Eva. Back in the day many many song writers worked in The Brill Building in NYC, affectionately as "Tin Pan Alley" where they could also collaborate with other writer, musicians, work with publishers that were housed there, etc. It was kind of all you needed in one place. King & Goffin were part of that beehive of activity that goes back to around 1900.

Yes, I can remember trying to work out the moves to this, just from the record (no videos then), at children's parties. But the really big dance craze of the era was the Twist, and I clearly recall being taught it by a little schoolfriend, in the bathroom, before we could hit the party scene to show off our skills!

Carole King wrote so many songs for other artists before she got divorced and went on her own. Tapestry was an album owned by so many of us in the 70s. They even have a Broadway musical about Carole King called Beautiful. It amazing! I was in tears at the end and was trying to hide them but looked at my son and he had tears as well. The Monkees Pleasant Valley Sunday was also written by her and Geffen. It would be fun to have you do songs from musicals. You would be surprised at how good they are. This month a movie Dear Evan Hansen is coming out and many of the songs from it are amazing.

It blows my mind, that the songs I grew up listening to in the 50’s, 60’s, and ‘70’s, were done by someone else in the UK…and you grew up listening to a “counterfeit” version. You're right - virtually all of 1950s and early 60s pop music in the UK was American - either the original versions or very often covers by UK artists. But there was one significant upside in particular to all this borrowing (or 'counterfeit'): UK musicians' passionate love of American music plus a far more relaxed attitude to race relations resulted in a lot of previously shamefully neglected African-American artists ending up becoming successful, well-known and greatly respected in the UK. Prior to that, back home in the States their recordings had generally been relegated to the (low) status of 'race music' and (IIUC) not played at all by radio stations catering to mainstream, white audiences. The so-called British Invasion of these black-American-music-inspired UK artists into the US, brought its own rich heritage back to America and finally into mainstream recognition there, thus completing the circle. I don't know this for sure, but I would imagine, this must have made a considerable contribution to the ending of African American segregation and disenfranchisement in the 60s.

The other two versions still sound good though. How fairy tale crazy that Little Eva started out as Goffin and King's teenage babysitter -- "they knew she could sing when they met her and it would be just a matter of time before they would have her record songs they wrote" -- How fortunate for us!

Another really great song from roughy this era that I know you'd love is "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass (pronounced "bass," like the fish, not like the instrument). One of my all-time favorite songs. It's just so much fun. In the early to mid '60s, there were two prime-time TV shows here in America that featured music for the younger generation -- ABC-TV's "Shindig!" and NBC-TV's "Hullaballo." This looks like it was from a "Shindig!" telecast.

Great song and I loved this when it came out. I think the three girls were the group known as The Blossoms, who had some hits of their own. And the middle lady in the Blossoms was Darlene Love who is a legend in her own right. Darlene love is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet there she was singing backup for Little Eva.

A suggestion for you. This was a time in the '60s when there were quite a few different dances that came out and each had a song to go with it. You could look up the different ones and the songs, such as The Twist, The Bristol Stomp, The Peppermint Twist, The Hully Gully, The Watusi, The Swim, The Jerk and I'm sure there were others that I've forgotten about over the years.

Harri, my man, we are the boomers who were the product of all the warriors coming home after a terrible war. It was thought that we were the winners in this debacle so the energies were high high high when the boys got home and took up with their women folk again. For 10 years after this from 1945 onward the baby population went nuts and by 1960 we were starting to get together with the girls and romance was the big thing at that time. Romance was everywhere and the boomers started to blossom. By the mid 60s this huge new population of young adults was in the swing of creativity in all aspects of society. Music was the loudest but everything was changing, art, culture, everything. Peace, love, dove, flower power, dabbling in new religions and philosphies all across the world. The hormones filled the air and so the greatest flood of musical creativity was the result. It was a special time that could be reproduced but only in that one special way that this timeline was produced. Love listening with you Sir Harri... Onward and upward my man.

So many stories about this song. Originally written for Deedee Sharp who sang The Mash Potato. She rejected it and Carole King gave it to a 19 year old Little Eva (supposedly her babysitter). It went to #1 in 1962. In 1974 Grand Funk Railroad recorded it and also had a #1 hit. Finally in 1988 Kylie Minogue hit the charts with it and went to #1 in several countries but only #3 in the US. The video shown of Little Eva is supposed to be the only known existing video of her singing. She only made $50 a week and got no royalties and in the early '70s moved home to North Carolina broke. She passed away about 20 years ago. Lots of people half expected a big push to make it a hit again in the '90s.
