This is an excellent example of how useful built-in furniture and cabinets can be for freeing up space in a small house. Very well done.

I have been looking for this. I saw this in 2014 I think, a long time ago and I really liked it! I am going to downsize now that I am older and a widow. Now that I am alone, I don’t need a lot of material things😢, this would just be perfect for me! I just want to downsize to be very minimalistic so my adult children won’t have much to deal with when I leave this world. Life just doesn’t have the meaning it used to. So lost without my better half😢.

You're a real inspiration to me and my girlfriend. Because of your channel and others that are similar, we have purchased a travel trailer and are going to try living in it for a year. We are inspired by the simplicity of life that comes with downsizing and reducing the need for material possessions and currency. We aren't skilled enough to build a cabin yet, but we're going to start with a shed! Ty for all you do.

It's My humble opinion that this is one of Your best designs . My thoughts would be to put two of em together , have a real comfy liveing room , gun safe room , ( get away from " DREAM KILLER " room ) etc etc . I think You get it ! I bet it could be built for 20k ( if You had a real good CARPENTER friend , if You know what I mean ) , inc solar off grid system ( not so sure bout septic , rain water collection & plumbing ) !!

This is the Best 150-200 sq ft Cabin I've ever seen! Very nicely done. A Murphy bed that folded into the wall would make lots of space for entertainment, Exercising, etc. the kitchen table could do the same as well! Sure would make most out of this Really nice Home.

well, my friend...I always enjoy your videos. thank you. this is a gem. I saw several 'tweaks' I'd make for me, but, as you stated, this was for a lady friend, and her requirements will differ from mine. I like the "psychological" benefits of this design. The "luxury" items offset any sense of "sacrifice." The separate rooms/spaces are good. In a remote location, all this is very important to mental health. Well done.

I've been following you for several years and have a great appreciation for your creative and frugal ways. This little cabin design is an excellent example of what you can do with a really small space. I have been brainstorming something like this for years to uses as a guest space and should be pulling the trigger sometime in 2016. This one is a great inspiration, however I think I can go with a 12 x 24 and employ the same layout and make it more handicap-friendly with wider doors and more elbow room. The full height ceilings make a BIG difference in not feeling claustrophobic and adds greatly to the available storage possibilities. Thanks for this video.

Water heater? Kitchen/bathroom/laundry fans and vents? Put a Murphy bed on the kitchen/bedroom wall, desk/TV on the outside wall. More day space.
@solarcabin11 жыл бұрын
There is about a foot and a half clearance all around the bed so if you turned it the other way against that wall where the sliding door is you could build in another wall of storage. Yes you could do a small vanity with more storage underneath and replace that mirror with another narrow storage unit.

A queen size Murphy bed would work well in the bedroom, and allow for a small desk or some chairs for guests; also, with an extra 100 or 200 sq ft, this place would be even more miraculous!

The heating system is always optional. I would use a small propane wall furnace and would place it under the tv in the bed area or in the kitchen in the front wall by the table.

wood stoves take up a lot of room because of clearances. I designed an outdoor wood furnace that you can build next to your cabin that would work. They also make rocket stoves and small boat wood stoves that take less space. if you use a couch bed or small bed and take out that desk you could put a small wood stove on that wall where the desk is.

It all depends on the county and some just require an approved septic and water system. In most rural counties you can build under 200 sqft as a dry cabin using solar and a composting toilet.

You did a awesome job with this design. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to your next book. Greetings.

Awesome video! I would skip the tub design in favor of a huge shower so hubby and I could shower together as we are disabled and it takes two. My only fear is claustrophobia but I think the easy outdoor access would help with that. Really like this!

I leave those out in these cabins because they are designed for off-grid use and you have several options. I would heat and cook with propane and use a small OD water heater. AC could be a window unit. Built ins are hard to estimate but materials would be around $1000. Basic cabin framing about $2000.
@solarcabin11 жыл бұрын
I would use a small On Demand water that can go in the built in by the toilet. Furnace would be propane unit in that wall under the tv. AC could be a window unit or swamp cooler on the roof.

For just the floor, walls and roof structure insulated and sealed would be around $2000. The built-ins would depend on whether you can do it your self or have them built but materials would be around $1000 if you use nice wood.

Thanks- as with all my cabin designs the furnishings are completely optional and you could easily expand this cabin plan with a barn roof and loft. The garden tub was just to show how luxurious these small cabins can be made but for efficiency a shower or smaller tub would be recommended.
@solarcabin11 жыл бұрын
I have used pocket doors in some designs but they can be a problem in a small cabin because you may have wiring and plumbing in those walls and there may no be enough room to slide a door into the wall. if they fit use them but the accordion door or folding doors take up little space and are better than a conventional swinging door in small houses.
@solarcabin11 жыл бұрын
Thanks- I am working hard on it and should be done in the next few months.

It's a fantastic design ! My only question is a question I asked myself years ago. I built a single car garage 12 x 20 , at completion I asked myself why I didn't go 16 x 20 for very little more labor or material cost ?? I read your post on sheds above and I get it. If you use vertical siding as in , 4 x 8 sheets you sacrifice half of one sheet to build 10 wide , why not 3 full vertical sheets to get 12 ft width ? A world of difference inside living area . I know addl rafter length etc. Cost is minimal and pay once , you enjoy the cabin for years ,! It would add 40 sq ft... 20 % more sq ft of living area.. again great design it's just my 2 cents ! 👍

Not all people want or can use a loft. It gets harder to climb a ladder when you get older or have disabilities. You could add a loft to this cabin design using a higher peak or barn style roof.

Short water heater where the dishwasher is, and a window in the bathroom for several reasons like odors and mold, and 3 baseboard heaters at base of outside walls with a small window unit A/C in the bedroom. I like the overall plan just fine, it would make an admirable tiny home, trailer type. And I would use plastic panels on the walls of the shower instead of tile, because tile might come lose when moving. Just adding a few tiny ideas to see if you would approve. Thanks, Love your videos, hope to use the windows in the septic tank or at least black paint on tank cover if I ever get to build something like this.

I would use 2x2s since they are not load bearing and do not have to be insulated to save a few inches which matters in a small house.

It depends on the materials used but a basic frame, shell and insulated would be around $2000-$3000 not including windows and doors or any interior finish. A good shed builder could build one for you.

Excellent design, Lamar. Brilliant use of space with all the built-ins -- it really makes it so much bigger than it seems. For myself, I would probably prefer to have a 3x3 shower stall rather than a large garden tub like that. Do you think that could be done and add a little more to the kitchen area? Maybe some additional counter space for a small toaster/convection oven? It looks like there isn't an oven with that stove unit. I'm seriously considering going small, and this design jumped to the front of the list, provided I could spring for the cost. Also, digging the music too, my friend. Keep up the good work!

I should have added: you could easily build two of these side by side with a shed style roof and then you would have 2 more big 10x10 rooms for a living room and a large work space or office or master bedroom. Contact me if you want a sketchup.

I agree , I've spent at least a dozen hours going over many different plans, and this is about as practical as it can get, because like you say, all you need to do expand this is open a door from the bathroom into a second exact same building. And if you think about, it is a bit strange to use a bathroom as a passageway - however - hallways are a waste of space~

Great plans, but I would make a change for the table and chairs: Foldup/down table on same wall as now, chair rack (not rail) on wall above table to hang chairs when not in use, or folding chairs to hand on wall. All this to facilitate movement of wheeled butcher block cart. As it is you would need to be constantly moving the cart when you need access to the stove/oven and use of the bathroom! This way the table/chairs would be out of the way until needed.
