I live in a mini home as well and thought I had hit rock bottom when I made thee change. I find now 2 years later that it is OK. I also have expensive electronics, a massive DVD collection, computer, and most all of my life is intact in a small space. It is not so bad, in fact I feel peaceful as I also have no debt.

Sure it was part of a big house but that was still our domain (I had to share with my sister so I took on the unfinished portion of the basement). So it's not like we can't do it. I just think of the outside world as the rest of my house. When I owned a larger home I barely went upstairs. I used to think of excuses to go up there.

Children get stressed when parents struggle to pay bills, especially unnecessary bills. My sister and I would have been much happier had my parents not attempted to live beyond their means in a large house they could not afford. It created unbelievable tension. And quite frankly we children were often blamed in a backhanded way when our parents would claim they were in terrible debt 'for us'. I think this is one big reason why the boy in the video seems so content. He understands that he will probably not lose the roof over his head. That is a great comfort to kids.

I have never built nor owned a "tiny home" (only small apartments), but from what I've heard is that, you're right, you can find used travel trailers for less money, but many people opt for tiny homes built more like traditional homes because they want something that is built sturdier and better-insulated for year-round living. And many talk about aesthetics and custom features. I do have a few videos of people living in RVs, a converted school bus & very cheap, handbuilt, tiny homes.

Love your house, lived in a shotgun house in New Orleans with my child and we had a blast, not much bigger than this. I applaud the fact that you and your family were brave enough to live the way that is right for you. Your son appears to be very happy, I would have loved to have been able to home school my kid. I worked so hard building my business up for 12 years...all for what? A 4,200 sq. ft. 6 bedroom/4 bath home that I did not need! LOL, the house was so big that there were parts of it that I did not step foot in to for 3-4 months at a time. Now, the economy has decimated my business and I'm striving to have a home like this on a few acres of land and try to live as rich in self sustainability as possible. I only wish I would have had my priorities straight 12 years ago...less, really is more!

It was fun to check back on this video - I haven't seen it in a couple of years. As for the comments on how our son turned out - he now has a bachelor's degree in education, and speaks three languages fluently. After leaving the 'Shotgun Shack', he has lived in Panama, Bolivia, and Taiwan, and has spent time in Ecuador and the Galapagos, The Philippines, Hong Kong, and China. Pretty cool kid. We are doing good also, now live in Bolivia. We still have very few possessions, but enjoy life tremendously.

I love this... hubby and I downsized from a 2,000 sq. ft. home to a 900 sq. ft. aptment. We very much wanted to find something exactly like this, but, all the tiny homes we found are still costly and then we don't have the land to put one on.... Still I love the concept and would welcome moving into a home like this one and to pay under $200.00 in rental space is unheard of! Love their mind set of "appreciate" what you do have, and not what you don't and the fact you have only what you NEED, not want and becoming materialistic with "stuff"..

I like this particular model because of the downstairs bedroom. If one is young it *usually* does not matter... but if one is older, OR has an accident/health issue, where they can not negotiate a ladder (I was bedridden twice before I was 45) then you can't live in your own house. So.. a downstairs bedroom was essential for me. Never assume you will always have your health. I also like that they have a reg. frig and stove. Great Tiny House

We have a 2013 40 ft Park model, with all the things needed for modern life. It came equipped with all appliances, including AC(central), gas heat(central), full size fridge, gas range, double sink, 12 gal hot water(120V and gas), well insulated, tons of storage, hardwood cabinets, dining table and chairs, 2 Lazy Boy loungers, sleeper sofa, surround-sound radio/DVD built in, king size bed, 7ft ceilings, real toilet, double bathroom sinks, two showers(in and out), aluminum siding, tinted windows, 12 volt lighting, all in a total of about 350ft. All of this delivered to our rented beach lot in a campground on a lot(24x60) parking for two, deck is 24x10 with awning, $500 /mo including water, sewer, cable, internet. We paid $26k. We just added the deck and a TV.

I really love this family, they make the home. I think the reason why some people that have smaller families aren't attracted to small homes for their families is because they don't have the same close knit bond some other families do so they want to get away from each verses getting together as much as possible.

+latishabrown801 You brought up a good point, but there are places for getting away from each other in a tiny home. 1) You have the loft: it's helpful to pinky-swear to not talk to the person who is on a loft get-away. 2) There's the tiny deck or patio: ones built on the roof are especially private. Third and best) walks. Going for walks, short or long, is a daily activity for a lot of tiny home folks. I used to wander out every day and again at night. It's kind of necessary, really.

This is the best looking little house I have seen so far. I could really live in a house like this. The high ceilings really do make it feel like it has more space. The loft bedroom for your son is cool. It looks cozy. Most kids would love it. I would live in it. Your right about most people have to much stuff. We buy things then put it in the closet and never use it. I have a rule now" If I haven't used it in 2 years I get rid of it." We don't need more storage just less stuff to store. Only have what you use everyday get rid of everything else.

I raised two daughters in a 384 sq.ft cabin with a sleeping loft (16X24). I have been mortgage free for the past 12 years. I have no debt or credit cards. Now days for less than the price of even a base model pick-up truck you could have a parcel of land and a small home and be debt free. We built in 2003 and have since added a 16X16 two story addition to the cabin. My property taxes on 20 acres run less than $300 per year and my electric/internet/phone run less than $100 a month.

There a company in town near me that builds a 16X32 cabin shell for $9500 then you finish the interior the way you want it. There are owner carry land for sale around here for sale. Land here is running about $3000 an acre these days. When I bought it was a lot cheaper.

But a kid, I used to love roofed bedroom like his cozy and raised up.. and they did mention they started when he was little & if you forgot, go to elementary school and remember how short kids are... it's all relative how you see things and their son was even cool now and he loved it as much anyways go spend days inside his room.. because you know what it's his.. there's and they were able to give him time attention as parents with a small house than a larger apt. and the option of being homeless was worst off option.

I knew their kid would be home schooled. What I didn't guess was that the kid would be stowed away in the attic. I get living in small spaces and the concept of it, but this is like the worse end of that spectrum. It feels like the parents had a wet dream of living in a shack so everyone could be within a 2 metre radius of eachother and have almost no privacy and they'd live happily ever after... Yeah, no. For a single person or a couple would be fine but I disagree when it comes to having a child and living in such a small area. I know it is better than living on the streets with a child but if you can afford more which if you have no house payment it should be easy then why not get a place where your son can grow and thrive! It may seem all good now but wait til he is a teenager!

Whats to say the loss of convention i.e. a large house is to have a detrimental effect on a child. in the end as long as the childs physical and emotional need are met and there happy and loved surely that is all that matters. in the end you dont miss what you dont have we spend fa to much time wanting instead of spending time on what matter.

So, my great-grandparents had and raised 7 children in a 1-room house during the turn of the century (ultimately, they would have 12 children). There are lots of cultures around the world where everyone sleep in the same room. Children having complete privacy and separate living space is a very neo-European concept, and the US has sort of grossified it to the extreme. I've shared a 2-bedroom apartment with 6 other adults, I've shared a 500 2bd sq. ft. mini house with 2 other adults, two cats, a dog and 2 ferrets. People can share very small living spaces if they are polite, courteous, respectful, etc. If your boys would have been so opposed to being close to their family, maybe that says a hell of a lot more about your children and your parenting skills than the tiny house movement.
