South African cricket was in a very sad state of affairs in 2015 and 2016. Allegations of match-fixing surfaced in the domestic game and furthermore, the national team endured poor results. But it took a moment of individual brilliance to bring some relief to long-suffering SA cricket supporters. That moment came on the 5th of January 2016, when Temba Bavuma became the first Black African to score a Test century for the Proteas. Our story takes us through Bavuma’s journey. We learn more about the young man who started from humble beginnings in Langa township and soared to super-stardom as an international cricketer. This story is important as it also illustrates how powerful sport can be for nation-building.
