He probably believes himself to be the hero of the story. He targets dead children with troubled pasts, playing games with them, trying to comfort them in a weird way. But it's all wrong. The kids shouldn't be trapped in his game loops, the sort of limbo he creates for them breaks apart in pain and confusion. Like the Beldam or other fair folk, his love for the children is true, but inhuman.

Well, since I was educated about this stuff since I was a kid, I'd probably get the suicide and stuff from about age ten. However, certain things in between the lines, like maybe theorizing why the man killed himself and why Misfortune doesn't have a good family, and also certain symbolisms, I'd probably not get. It really depends on upbringing and how much you learn. For most people I'd say they'd get most of it at 13. But little intricate things they'd probably understand more at 14-15. And gain some of the best understanding, not just of what is going on flat out, but also in between the lines around 16. Of course as an adult you would hopefully understand more. And one person's understanding of something, may not be another person's understanding of something. (Sorry for any typos)
