Another good game that does the scary aspect of the game right is Subnautica. It's hidden behind a crafting game but the exploration uses the environment to make your gut twist into a knot and only get tighter. Instead of jump scares it makes you look into the vast unknown and makes you wonder what may or may not be looking back. Awesome video by the way.

Subnuatica isn’t scary. After getting a prawn suit or a stasis rifle the risk from the leviathans goes from 10 to 0. And nothing does enough damage to actuall kill your or destroy your vehicles instantly

My favorite part about Little Nightmares has to be the really subtle world building with how even though monsters have set encounters, they still walk around going about their jobs and minding their business until they see you. Plus, there’s indicator on if something can be climbed, it’s just, if you can climb it in real life, you can climb it in the game

Little nightmares was the first horror game I’ve played that I felt was deserving of the genre. The 2 games’ visuals, atmosphere, lighting, gameplay, story, everything, helps to convey that you are an outsider in a world that you don’t belong, and they are amazing because of that

@@Artizap_ exactly, besides, they make perfect sense for a game over, it does make you go A! And then just ok, because they're designed to suddenly spike and release tension after a game over, but I do agree non "lethal" jumpscares tend to be really cheap and a bad management of the uncomfortability of a player, as they now think you're likely to pull that shit. How else do you do a game over any way, the monster slowly attacks you? This sounds like it would work, but the player would just realise they lost and ignore the following animation.

I just realized that the developers purposefully put in a "hand-holding" mechanic to give players a bit of comfort in the nightmare, and then later on in the game they throw a bunch of enemies at you which are literal hands.

Genuine recommendation from me to you. Not asking for a video on it. I feel you should check out SCP Containment Breach and or Secret Lab if you haven’t before. Both are really good horror games based on SCP (obviously). While 173 could be considered as a generic jump scare thing the environment or a foundation site where there could and are countless things that could be lurking and could kill you creates a good feeling of dread. And although Secret Lab is multiplayer is can be genuinely scary at time. It’s less horror but is still really fun. As there are multiple different forces all colliding to complete their own specific but similar task you have to strategize in most situations. You could even strike a deal with an SCP my talking to them if need be. I find both games really fun and love them both.

Another example of a good horror games is dead space like really most of the time it gives u the feeling of not being alone with it's creepy atmosphere and level design the same goes with silent hill and BioShock (even though it's not a horror game but it still have the feeling of horror with every step)

That's probably because, despite having a physics engine, Unreal Engine 4 really wacks out with physics. The meat grinder puzzle has to teleport the hams out of bounds to keep the physics engine from flipping out, for example.

one thing i’ve noticed this game does which all good horror games should is let the player scare themselves with their own logic and reasoning. like for instance before you see the chefs theres hundreds of body bags piled up, then suddenly empty body bags and a trail of blood. it doesn’t explicitly point out “hey the kids are the food lmaoo” it lets you see these clues and piece them together and have that spine chilling realisation of “oh my god, the janitor was wrapping up kids in body bags now they’re all empty with a blood trail.” incredible stuff.

I feel like fnaf’s appeal comes from how characters, gameplay, and secrets flow into one package. Fnaf1 is the strongest entree because each animatronic AI was truly a blast to try to understand and managed, the secret story is used as a part of attraction to show the unease and pain the children went through, the self-contained story is genuinely good and it leads you into wanting more.

I am a MASSIVE fan of Little Nightmares and those are some of the reasons why I love it so much :D The story, its universe, its characters and so on! And I also agree on the fact its underappreciated though I do see KZbinrs make references now and then which I think is a start?
