I remember trying to sleep under one blanket in the stern of a USN DE operating in February in the cold Labrador current off of Halifax fine February. I couldn't sleep due to shivering so I moved to the steel workbench in the Machine Shop. It was warmer anyway. OH, the ocean off of Halifax, Canada in February is not joke. I figured we should be paid for Submarine duty. I am a serious Longest Johns fan.

*LYRICS - Little Pot Stove - The Longest Johns (Harry Robertson)* In that wee dark engine room, Where the chill seeps through your soul, How we huddled 'round that little pot stove, That burned oily rags and coal… How the winter blizzards blow, When the whaling fleet's at rest… Tucked in Leith Harbour's sheltered bay, Safely anchored, ten abreast. The sailors at their stations, As from ship to ship, they go… Carry little bags of coal with them, And a little iron stove… In that wee dark engine room, Where the chill seeps through your soul, How we huddled 'round that little pot stove, That burned oily rags and coal. The fireman Paddy works with me, On the engines, stiff and cold… A stranger to the truth is he; There's not a lie he hasn't told. Well, he told me of his goldmine, And of all the hearts he'd won… And his bonnie sense of humour shone, Just like a ray of sun… In that wee dark engine room, Where the chill seeps through your soul, How we huddled 'round that little pot stove, That burned oily rags and coal. We laboured seven days a week, With cold hands and frozen feet… The bitter days and lonely nights, Makin' grog and havin' fights. Salt fish and whale-meat sausage, Fresh penguin eggs, a treat… And we trudged along to work each day, Through icy wind and sleet… In that wee dark engine room, Where the chill seeps through your soul, How we huddled 'round that little pot stove, That burned oily rags and coal. And then one day, we saw the sun, And the whaling fleet return… Meet your old friends, sing a song, Pray the season won't be long. Then it's homeward bound when it's over, Yes, we'll leave this icy hole… But I always will remember, that little iron stove! In that wee dark engine room, Where the chill seeps through your soul, How we huddled 'round that little pot stove… That burned oily rags and coal…

A few years back three intrepid (idiotic) kiwis decided to kayak around South Georgia - where this song is set. Anyone interested can read their tale in Unclaimed Coast: the first kayak journey around Shakleton's South Georgia. They also discovered what it is to be really cold! . So glad spring is now returning to our chilly southern realm. Thanks for the fabulous song LJs.

Here's a suggestion for another little-known one from left-field. Gallagher and Lyle did a version of Desiderata to a beautiful tune. I have it on an LP of theirs, but no record player. The only posting of it I can find of it on You Tube is of a jumpy LP, where you can hear the needle scrape on the vinyl. It's still beautiful! You guys would more than do it justice. A bit outside your usual field, but that is stretching beautifully lately, so I hope you might consider it.

Lovely harmonies lads. But Harry Robertson was a Scot, and he didn't write 'Little Pot Stove'. He wrote 'Wee pot stove'. Perhaps you've learnt the song from the famous version by Nic Jones. Nic made the same mistake. Also, it's not 'bonny' sense of humour. It's 'bawdy' sense of humour. Harry Robertson settled and died where I live - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. So we respect his writing.
