Richard was a friend and mentor to me. In the '70's he asked me "Richard, are you any good?" I replied, and he said,"Honey, if anybody asks you, you tell 'em, I'm fantastic!" Then when they say, oo, so conceited...You tell them I ain't conceited, I'm convinced!" That time has stuck with me all these years!

When y’all watch the videos of Richard in the 50s keep in mind there was nobody doing that before him. He and Chuck Berry were the architects of the genre. Richard and Chuck Berry would be the first 2 faces carved into a Mount Rushmore of rock n roll.

Love Little Richard. Mom got me hooked on the early days when I was a young kid. The announcer was Alan Freed. The man who coined the phrase Rock and Roll. He's also the DJ most responsible for bringing all the what they called "colored music" or R&B to mainstream rock radio. He was highly criticized for it at the time. But the guy knew talent when he heard it. That was in the days of top 40 radio where DJ's could make a hit record if it was any good and got it on the radio. Freed's rock and roll shows were legendary.

His signature “woo!” just before the sax solo was developed because they recorded on three tracks. He used it to signal the solo to begin. Tutti Fruit was originally a dirty ditty about sex. The “wop bop balu bop a wop bam boom” was something he would say asa dish washer because he couldn’t talk back to the boss. I listened to this mans music for years and would try so hard to imitate him. He has so much more energy.

Little Richard was always the performer and professional, he is also the only one at a concert in San Dimas, Ca. That had his people pass out Bibles to us that included an autograph picture, still have both. Was a fantastic concert he was much older too. Thanks for sharing Take care, stay safe, and God Bless.

Little known fact: Jimi Hendrix was a guitarist in Little Richard's band in the mid-1960s. He's on record saying, "I'm trying to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice."

Wow! What an artist! Let's try to imagine what music would have been like with Little Richard. Wow. He was a legend. I am still in mourning. Imagine the road that music would have taken without Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Holly. So many legends and pioneers of music to come were inspired by these legendary roots. Thank you, Little Richard. Until we meet again...

The Beatles opened for him before they were big, Jimmy Hendrix was his guitarist, James Brown was his vocalist and Elvis looked up to him before he was big, Prince was inspired by him among many others. Little Richard is the concrete foundation upon which rock and roll was built.

A few years before he passed away Little Richard and a large entourage came into the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Middle TN where me and my husband were dining. He was dripping with gold chains and furs, surrounded by security and beautiful women. They sat in a back section and we could hear them laughing and enjoying themselves. They were a sight to behold and I am so glad to have been there at the time. It makes me smile, and a little sad, knowing he is gone. My mom taught me to do The Stroll in our garage and she always said I was born in the wrong decade.... I have to agree.

One of my favorite quotes of his was, "Elvis may be the king of rock and roll , but I'm the queen". And that was a time when not only was it unsafe to be black, it was also unsafe to be effeminate and gay.

according to Alan Walden, who was later Otis Redding and Lynyrd Skynyrd's manager, he and his brother Phil (Capricorn Records) saw Richard downtown walking around Macon, Ga with a pink parasol. They hollered tutti frutti at him, Richard then playfully started singing it back at them jokingly, and the rest is history...
