Hi Rollen and Angie, great group that I discovered in the early 80s while I was doing my military service and I was on a stopover in Australia in Sidney. I ran to a music store and bought the album. I brought it back to France and I still love this album.

Ok, So, Let's begin......the sound for LRB (Little River Band) is Glenn Shorrick as the Lead Singer. Wonderful Band. Wonderful music. Wonderful Harmonies. When John Farnham sings........your Jaw hits the floor and there is (IMHO), no voice on the planet that can match his range nor passion ! I was blessed to grow up listening to all of these wonderful Artists !

You as a couple looked like you revisited your vows of love to each other during each rendition of this song. I loved this. Its a brilliant song and a more deeply sharing of what love is among couples. Thank you you made me smile. : )

The original and the best LRB.70's. I was seeing a roadie who worked with LRB on the USA tour in the 70's. Really cool. They had a blast. But such innocent Ozzies overseas. He said he shared a joint with someone backstage and later found out it was Bob Dillon...hahahaha

Ya see how John was moving across the stage.....it's understood other members of the band hated that and shortened the length of the cord for his microphone, so he couldn't go anywhere.

A lot of staunch LRB supporters didn't take very well to John when he joined... they claimed he was too 'jazzy' and shouldn't have 'messed' with the arrangements as much as he did... (John is a frustrated musician and he uses his voice like a multitude of instruments.... which is in my opinion something that has always made him stand out vocally for decades)... John also tried not to 'mimic' Glenn's versions of the LRB songs... very difficult coming into an established band with an already solid fanbase... The bass player (Wayne Nelson) actually joined John's band for a while... he clearly appreciated John's talent as we all do.

John Farnham can sing anything! He did a song that he wrote with The Little Band called Playing To Win which is a must from that same concert you did Help with John Farnham, Angie. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra! Great job guys! I’m biased too, when it comes to Mr. John Farnham

Some songs got overplayed on radio back in the late 70's and early 80's. Another song like Africa by Toto I hated for 30 odd years because I heard it so often, but picked up my old record and played it again a few years back with my older mindset and appreciated it far more than I did back in the 80's. Did the same thing with the Foreigner 4 album, actually detested Waiting for a girl like you due to its repeated airplay but now appreciate it again. Glen Shorrock had that laid back and smooth voice but John Farnham is an absolute beast as a singer. He is brilliant.

I am a John Farnham fan, but i do really like Glenn Shorrock era LRB (i was a teenager through the early LRB) and i think this song is 'a Glenn song'. There is some excellent John era LRB too - dont get me wrong :)

I love that you reacted to both the original with Glenn Shorrock and with Farnham replacing Glenn. I like both and don't like one better than the other. They are the same but different. With Glenn I think LRB were a more homogeneous band. With John, because of the power, clarity and range of his vocals he is a more evident lead singer and the rest of the band more in the background. - Just my view anyway. But I often find myself preferring the Originals over Covers, which I think is what Rollen was saying about these two versions. That's the imprint in your head that you like. Unless the Cover totally re-invents the song in some way as Farnsey did with the Beatles' Help, or Disturbed did with Sounds of Silence.

Great! I've been waiting for this reaction. Personally I much prefer John's rendition rather than the Glenn Shorrick version. John just has so much more charisma and engagement with his audience. Despite the jealousy and tensions within the band, I like how John still brings the audiences attention to other band members...something that he continued throughout his career. I think he is one of the most selfless performers out there.

Bullshit. Glenn Shorrock shits all over him, in the case of LRB. And that pissy Housden guitar solo, was a joke. The Little River Band is Shorrock, Goble and Birtles.
@carolynh8866

Long story short, the original band members argued so much over the years that they were constantly leaving the band and coming back ...so a new company was formed... we two pty ltd i think it was called. That company owned the right to the name LRB and everything associated. As people left the band they would be bought out. So last man standing was not even an original band member. Steven Housan. Band members came back into the group under contract. Now Shorrock Birtles and Gobles fought to get the rights back to the name given they were the origial band members and wrote most of the songs. With no luck .

A bit unfair, the Glen Shorrock version was not recorded all that well. I mean, yes, you got the idea, but the second recording with John was a lot crisper sounding. Glen had been in a few successful bands prior to LRB, Axiom and The Twilights. Beep Birtles was in Zoot with Rick Springfield (who moved to the US, started acting in shows like General Hospital, and had a massive hit with Jessie's Girl). Then Beep joined a band called Mississippi along with Graham Gobel. If you check out their song Make Way For The King's Of The World, you will hear how even then, the harmonies were amazing. So when you add Shorrock, he just blended in so well. And that was their strength. Killer harmonies. Yes, John is a great singer, but he was always a lead singer, Glen could blend in better.
@carolynh8866
@carolynh8866 2 жыл бұрын
No competition John slays that and wins by 10000 miles. His arrangement is so much better along with the energy he brings, the way he engages the audience. But Shorrock is the recognised sound of LRB.

I don't think there's any doubt that the original combo was the right combo. Didn't we call it the West Coast sound? John didn't have and no matter how hard he worked it just didn't work and it was more or less the end of LRB but the making of JF. I doubt that Whispering Jack would have happened without his stint in LRB

@@Bellas1717 but that doesn't explain why, to this day American fans prefer Glenn. Because it was his voice that gave it the 'boring' soft rock sound that John couldn't emulate. Even John's manager didn't want him to join the group. And as it turned out he was right. But what it did do was prepare John for what was coming. The GOAT we all love today.

@@rickandersen2284 It was Glenn Wheatley and Graeham Goble (founding member, who had arranged 'Help' for John) who suggested John join LRB. Generalising "American fans" - no group is homogenous. Anyway, obvious we will not agree here, so no point discussing any further. Cheers.
