CaptainBetsy:I love to sing, I'm singing in a church choir and I'm a 29 year old woman from Norway. Of course I still can hit the high notes in this song quite easy, but that doesn't mean that I have the voice of a young boy. Boys' voices are really special, so clear and pure, and that is a thing boys can really be proud of. Listen to the songs of St. Paul's Cathedral Choir here on youtube; like Deo Gratias and Balulalow. There you can hear that special sound of the boy's voice! Happy singing!

The most beautiful of carols and that young soloist is brilliant. I get pilloried a lot for saying this but a trained boy treble voice, just before it breaks particularly, is unique.

Too beautiful for words. There is no sound on earth to match organ + trebles.

In all the discussion I can't belive that I forgot to say that this song is so beautiful; the Wells boys really sound like "a star of gold!"

I was one of the first girl choristers at Wells and we were fab (I'm 26 now) - I'm very proud of my time at Wells and, although we were very different to the boys, we sounded great. And, after hearing the latest girl choristers, they sound absolutely stunning. Fabulous memories.

@Hutzelschweiz5 Hayley Westenra also does a version of this song - lower pitch and faster - it has a a much 'smaller' feel than this arrangement

Didn't some professional organization in the UK do a test of girls and boy trebles singing and find that they couldn't tell the difference? OTOH the boys have such a short window during which they can sing as trebles.
@jennywren41315 жыл бұрын
I'm a girl chorister too, and I agree that girls just don't get the training as much! by any chance do you sing at Christ Church Cathedral? When my choir sang there years ago I picked up a fantastic CD of the girl's choir- I didn't want to get back on the plane, I wanted to stay in Dublin and join that choir! somehow that didn't work out :)
@alonelychild17 жыл бұрын
Are you singing? How old are you? When was this, each year?
@cantorisdecani14 жыл бұрын
@48acar19 That has everything to do with tastes regarding one versus the other and nothing to do with girls' voices being "aggressive" or "lousy" as you claimed. If anything, girls tend to have a lighter airier sound than boys.

I understand that loads of people say boys are better singers, but I disagree, there are hundreds more boys choirs than girl's, so few girls are taught to sing this kind of music. I'm lucky enough to be in a very good girl's choir and we are one of the best in Dublin, plus I'm 16 and can still hit the high notes in this song!
@mwnciboo6 жыл бұрын
Hitting the note is 20% of the job...I sang in a Cathedral (all male) choir, from 5 - 12 years old. Male Trebles perform better in descant. The tone and timbre changes with female trebles...not bad not worse just different and also less power in the range.
@48acar1914 жыл бұрын
@cantorisdecani : If what you are saying would be true, then girls choirs would be successful too in Japan and other countries, including England. But this does not happen. You can find that boys' choirs are much more successful than girls' choirs, including financially!
@48acar1916 жыл бұрын
Still, I almost cannot see girls' choires...it must be a reason why the boys'voices are more beautiful.
@cantorisdecani16 жыл бұрын
That's rather harsh and unfounded. Girls' choirs may have a significantly different sound but they're no more likely to be lousy and they're most definitely not aggressive! They're a different musical instrument with their own sound.
@48acar1916 жыл бұрын
How come boys' choirs sound so fantastically beautiful, while girls'choirs sound aggressive and lousy?
