The Reluctant Orchid is a really good story, because it all makes sense. Like the plant wasn't evil or vicious, it was just hungry. If he didn't starve it, it wouldn't be a threat. And once it gets properly fed and cared for, it because docile and pet like. Also, it has a funny ending.

It’s pretty wild that the original ending of little shop was unseen for so long. It was probably the most expensive, effects heavy portion of the movie, but it also gives the story some thematic intention beyond a romantic resolve and some catchy songs. The movie has all this emphasis on poverty, capitalism, “American dream” etc- with the theatrical ending it all just comes across as insignificant. The original ending puts a nice pessimistic bow on the story and turns it into a morality tale where a few get rich but everyone dies. Great vid 👌Don’t stop making content.

Little Shop of Horrors is one of my favorites, the 1986 movie with both endings, and I've seen it performed live three times (at small theatres). The 1961 version scared me the first time I saw it many years ago, all those faces! I don't know the short stories but based on your recap, they definitely sound like artistic influences. I prefer the original horrific ending, I'm glad it was recovered.

Frequent Roger Corman actor Jack Nicholson is the masochistic patient (a part later played by Bill Murray in the musical movie, although he actually gets to see the dentist there--turns out the dentist's sadism isn't sated by masochists, though).

For the musical the plant’s voice was originally very nasal in imitation of Audrey Junior. The score was not fun early ‘60s rock. There’s also a video of Menken performing a medley of the cut songs at a Little Shop fan show. There is also a group of early demo songs performed by Ashman & Menken.

I personally prefer the original over the remake, which might surprise some of you. The remake is great, but that's mostly because of the special effects and the musical numbers. The original's characters were more memorable to me and the deaths were funnier. Seymour, Audrey, and Mr Mushnik seemed to interact more naturally in the original, probably because they had to in real life. Most of the scenes you see in the original were the first takes. The movie only took 4 days to shoot on a fairly low budget and had multiple cameras from various angles filming simultaneously. It was like watching......well, a sitcom! To me, the remake feels more like a play that was more reliant on visuals than storytelling, which doesn't mean it's a bad movie. I enjoy it! Steve Martin's musical number is one of my favorites ever and the animatronics are breathtaking to watch, but that's about it for me. The original wasn't about special effects. It was there to tell a darkly hilarious story and it really delivered!

For anyone curious about venus flytraps, because the musical actually inspired my green thumb (which isn't that green but I learned some things) to take care of house plants, they don't die after eating three times. However, a lot of people get all giddy about watching them eat and overfeed them on flies or other things they shouldn't eat. Flytraps evolved carnivorous appetites as a backup for the crappy swamp soil they grow in, and when left to their own devices, they actually grow very slowly. It can take YEARS for them to bloom in the wild. Also, they're usually tiny. They grow among swamp shrubs and grasses, where flies occasionally buzz around and make a big mistake. So, imagine if you just had a big meal and then just as you start to digest, you're immediately force-fed another big (possibly toxic) meal. You would die, and that's exactly what happens to these tiny plants. If they have good soil and you make sure they don't cook or freeze in your window, they don't need to eat very often. Also, they're endangered in their natural habitat. That natural slow growth rate has caused plant poachers (cuz they are a thing) to head out to the Carolina swamps where they grow and sell them to garden and grocery stores everywhere. So if you see one at your local home depot, DON'T buy it. You're supporting the destruction of endangered biomes, and it's probably going to die anyway. There are lots of responsible cultivators of different carnivorous plants on the net you can buy from. More expensive, but better.

I think I could handle the remake if they keep the things that make us love the story, and understand why the story is so well loved. Keeping that camp and b movie feel in there. They could even give us the original ending if they keep the songs that help lead up to it. Because in my opinion taking out it’s just the gas, changing how musnik confronts Seymour during supper time and taking Seymours solo in the meek shall inherit out made Seymour to sympathetic for the original ending. Which is one of the main reasons the test audience were so upset. I love the normal movie as is, but They could definitely fix that and give us a more accurate adaptation. Alternatively the idea of little shop of horror is so vast that if they put the passion behind it they could make a new brand of weird to enjoy. If they make Audrey 2 cgi though I’d personally have a problem I understand cgi is cheaper but Audrey 2 has traditionally been a puppet that’s one of the things the musical and movie are know for besides the camp and the original ending. It seems like a slap in the face if Audrey 2s souly cgi. I also am nervous about Chris evens as the dentist. He seems really passionate so I’m sure he can drive home a good performance. He also was pretty good as Vince from knives out. That being said the dentist is a pretty speratic character. He’s the guy who actively punches nurses and rips dolls heads off. He’s the embodiment of a 2d villain who you’re not allowed to sympathize with. You need the energy and over the Topness of Tim curry to pull it off. Steave Martin had that energy and understood the character which is why he did such an amazing job. I don’t have an issue with Chris Evens and I know he can play a bad guy but he seems to be a little to calm in his roles to play a dentist. It’s not enough to just be snarky you have to be down right insane. I could be very wrong though I haven’t seen him in many roles outside of captain America and knives out.

I love that you just do whatever pops into your head with this channel. It's like a grab bag of silly and interesting things. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Biblical Vampires, Cryptids, the TGIF lineup, StarGate, romance novel fanfic, psychics telling you what your future husband will look like... it's all game here. And now there's a great 40-minute video that covers Little Shop of Horror in all forms of media! If ever you throw together a proper channel trailer... man, how are you going to summarize what this channel is about, lol? Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about another version - this is the first I'm hearing of it. Though it doesn't have "the stink" of a usual current-day Hollywood "We have run out of ideas so we'll remake an older hit movie"-type project to it. It's more like... adding to the canon, right? Another version to compare and contrast against the other two films; not a reboot, not replacing the old ones, not trying to do a modern gritty definitive edition. If it's bad or good, doesn't matter - it's just another one thing to talk about. That's fine. Though I honestly struggle to think of a good, like, director to handle a comedic musical in this day and age...

My big fear with a remake is that they would try to get Tim Burton to direct. But it would be modern CGI Tim Burton, and it just wouldn't be right. Lol, my channel is very much a stream of consciousness. Like, the topics are all things I would potentially just start talking about if you were trapped in a room with me for a couple hours.

Pondering.... I wonder if the source material is a "Reefer Madness" style allegory about a weakling/outcast finding comfort/strength in a sinister plant (pot or poppies?) and succumbing to the powers of the plant, killing all of his friends, and ultimately dying. edit: there are definitely poppies in the plant from the 1960 movie.

I mean, if it's good I wouldn't mind seeing a another take on the story. Given how much it's already been remixed (not to mention copious stage adaptations) it would be churlish to say "no, we nailed it in 1986, no more verions". But, I would be trepidations. For every successful remake/sequel, there's more that fall flat or miss the mark.

The short stories, the '60's movie, the stage show ( both Broadway and high school productions alike ), the cartoon, and even a remake with all of the gender/race/orientation swapping they can muster can all be dismissed merely with a flick of the wrist. However, suggesting, or even hinting at the existence of the '83 director's cut is immoral and reprehensible and that is where I draw the line!
