I would also love to turn people on to the recent Canadian musical RIDE THE CYCLONE which is basically _Our Town_ by way of RL.Stine's _Goosebumps._ It's about six teenagers who died in a roller-coaster accident, but is by turns tragic, hilarious, life affirming, and sometimes downright spooky. The ramshackle carnival vibe is incredible with ghostly coloratura sung by a headless Jane Doe and narration by a mechanical fortune-telling booth. Musical styles go all over the map as the teens recount their lives and short-circuited aspirations. It's is unexpectedly _not_ a wallow in depression, but an exultant celebration of life.

I was seated in the "Blood Zone" of an Evil Dead production. It was one of the most fun shows I have seen. Especially with the way that production did it; they used some blood here and there throughout the show, and near the end you were kind of disappointed with the 10 drops of blood on you. Have it open something like this: Count Olaf comes onstage and says: Why, hello hello hello, my lovely audience. Welcome to the Count Olaf Theatre Troupe production of A Series of Unfortunate Events! First, we have a note the playwright requested me to read. He’s a great man, one….. LeeMone SneeKeet? Must be foreign. Anyway, “to inform you that you will probably not enjoy tonight’s performance”- HEY! “Due to the disturbing content.” Ohhhhhh. “No matter how much the”- ahem- extremely handsome, good-looking and talented actor playing the villain- “may seem to detract from that, detract here meaning take away from, if you enjoy happy stories with happy endings, now is your chance to request a refund.” We will not fulfill that request, by the way! We, um, already spent the ticket money on the show itself. Anyway, enough doom and gloom! I would like to request that all phones be turned off or set to the “completely silent, including vibration” mode, and that all photos, videos, audio recordings, legal pads used by reporters to find incriminating evidence, and VFD spyglasses be turned off as well! And one more thing! This is a work of fiction! Though I share the wonderful name Count Olaf with the villain, Olaf is just a common count name! And I don’t have a tattoo of an- AHHH! I, ahem, only have a tattoo of an eye on my ankle because that’s in vogue! Yeah, that’s why! I am quite a good person in real life, and I am not planning on burning down your house and stealing your fortune, you MISERABLE ORPHANS! Ahem, anyway enjoy the show! (He walks offstage.) You think they suspected my genius plot? Um, they do now. Your mic’s still on. AAAHHHH!

Spooky, horror musicals seem silly to the casual viewer for sure. Everything on this list is an adaptation, and if you told the average Joe about any of them, you'd probably get a reply along the lines of "How did they make that into a musical?!" But there's just something about it that works. Maybe it's the tonal dissonance creating a strange but effective harmony, maybe they just naturally elevate each other as equally melodramatic genres. It's tough to say. Digging into this could make for a video all its own. But spooky is it's own sub genre of musical at this point. There were tons more not even mentioned in this video! Jekyll and Hyde, Rocky Horror, Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein. The list goes on! It's a crazy, strange area of musical theater, but it's certainly a beloved one that will probably have many more entries in the future. Awesome list! Also wow! The Addams Family! That takes me back. 2010 KateCast had a phase with that musical. Good times. Bizarre times, but good.

I’m surprised Phantom of the Opera didn’t make the list, sure everyone knows about it but it’s the most iconic spooky musical. Elizabet is another great spooky musical, death is personified in the show as an actual character. It’s about the Austrian Empress Elizabet & her brushes with death through out her life. Death is depicted as being in love with her & constantly pursuits Elizabet & temps her to “join him”. He goes as far as to take her newborn daughter & convince her son to shoot himself to try to get Elizabet to kill herself. The opening number takes place in a graveyard/underworld type setting where the deceased who knew Elizabet sing the opening number with the line “everyone has danced with death but no one like Elizabet”. Death is made to be very alluring & attractive in the show making him hard to resist. It’s in German but there a full video of it on KZbin with English subtitles (just like tanz de vampir)

Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe is a musical I've been in love with for a while. It tells the story of Poe's life combined with the fantasy of his own works within a dark, sometimes twisted rock operetta. The visuals of this show are everything, and luckily the entire cast recording of the show is on Spotify, so one can listen to it like an audio book. The same company who did Nevermore, Catalyst Theatre in Alberta, is known for putting on similarly gothic shows as well, such as retellings of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris. I highly, *highly* recommend Nevermore and Catalyst Theatre if you're looking for a plethora of dark, spooky musicals.

Just saw The Addams Family musical with Teri Hatcher as Morticia. Amazing. Uncle Fester was hilarious.

oh Tanz! I adore the original German. It makes me so sad that it didn't work in the US. It makes me so sad that I can't find a copy of the Vienna pro shoot to purchase, so if anyone knows where to find it....?

I’d love it if you did an entire episode on the saga behind the Dance with the Vampires flop like you did with Carrie. I think Dance is one of the most fascinating flops in Broadway history, and the musical holds a special place in my heart because the European version is actually SO good.
