De jonge Noord-Londense rapper Little Simz mag Kendrick Lamar al tot haar fans rekenen. In haar tracks hoor je echo's van Kendrick: snelle, precieze flows met veel nadruk op de teksten, die vooral moeten gaan over real shit. In Simz' geval meestal over 'the grind': keihard werken om de top te bereiken. Of over het zijn van een outsider, iemand die moet leren om in zichzelf te geloven omdat niemand anders het doet. En die kroon die ze zo graag wil, verdient ze eigenlijk ook. Ze rapt trefzeker en nauwkeurig, haar beste liedjes hebben een haarscherpe emotionele kern. 'Mary' en 'Backseat' zijn als filmscènes: je ziet haar direct zitten, dit bloedserieuze meisje, achterin de klas of alleen op haar kamer. she was on at 14.30 on the first day of the festival, I was just impressed she filled out such a huge stage and, in fairness, she played a pretty chilled out set. can promise the atmosphere was good there, maybe it doesn't translate but people were having a good time and she definitely vibing off how many people showed up for her
