Almost every major name on the series is a inside joke. From Atsuko Kagari to Hannah & Barbara. Ursula, Chariot, Croix and even the headmistress are all winks and references.

Well here comes the list. Atsuko Kagari is a reference to Atsuko Kagami, protagonist of "Himitsu no Akko-Chan", widely recognized as the first magical girl. Lotte Janson is a reference to the creator of "Moomin", Tove Jansson, alsoo Finnish. Sucy Manbavaran is a reference to the word "Mambabarang", meaning evil sorceress. Cavendish is a real British house, and Diana is probably named after the famous princess. Ursula/Chariot is a big thematic thing. Chariot is the French name for the Big Dipper, those being all the stars "inside" of the Shiny rod. The big dipper is also known as Ursa Major, hence URSULA. Also her fake surname is "Callistis", a misspelling on Callisto, which means...bear. The north star of the Big Dipper is Polaris. Meanwhile, Croix Meridies is French for Southern Cross, another hallmark constellation, being used for south orientation, with the big dipper being the north one. There's many, many others.

The reporter witch, Wangari, is named after the Kenyan activist, Wangari Maathai. The Headmistress is named Samantha, a clear reference to Bewitched. The greedy dragon, Fafnir, a dragon from Nordic folklore. The pawn shop guy is modeled after Chumlee of Pawn Stars. And ( again ) the list goes on. Like i said, almost everything is a reference or a wink at something in LWA.
