What’s the movie Little Women about?
In nineteenth-century Massachusetts, with their father away serving in the Civil War, the women of the March family - the loving matriarch, Marmee (Laura Dern from Mask and Wild), and her four daughters, Jo (Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird and Brooklyn), Meg (Emma Watson from Harry Potter and Secret Circle), Amy (Florence Pugh from The Falling), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen) - are left all alone to fend for themselves. Faced with genteel poverty, the fledgeling author, Jo March, is struggling to make a name for herself in male-dominated New York City; considerate Meg is now married, and the artistically inclined, Amy, is in Paris with their affluent Aunt March (Meryl Streep from Out of Africa and The Iron Lady). However, the news of talented Beth's illness will reunite the sisters under the same roof. Well, she WAS his second choice, and this is by far, second to the 2017 miniseries, the worst. I mean, the casting is all wrong, right actresses, wrong roles, and I don't know, trying to make it about woke and all that when the book exudes feminism already is just... redundant. Winona's version is still the best, and most faithfull to Alcott's book.

​@@Khloe_dancer_model She was NOT the second choice. In the movies, they don't give enough time to Amy's development and Laurie's decline after Jo's. He had returned to vices and it is Amy who wakes him up. For her, he wishes to become a man worthy of her love. When he comes back and talks to Jo, in the movie they cut off the conversation. In the book, Laurie confesses that he stopped loving Jo long before he fell in love with his wife. He admits that he loves every detail of Amy's new character. And even during this conversation, Laurie tells Jo that he spent the best days of his life on his honeymoon in Valrosa with her beloved wife. And Jo felt that her friend had forgotten that he was talking to her, but she was happy, because the last time she had seen him he was full of sadness and a gray aura surrounded him, but what she saw now was a man who was happy and in love. Lourie also asks her to be friends again, he tells her he will always love her, but that her love for her has changed, as the love he felt for Amy has changed too. The order in which things happen does not favor Amy and Laurie's partner at all, but he does love her. Take into account that they met again after years and then they spend months together. Laurie was supposed to stay only one week on Paris, baut he decides to stay more for Amy. She was no longer a child and Laurie fell in love with her. The movie changed the fact that Laurie helped Amy to organize the reunion of the music teacher and Jo. It was Laurie and Amy who invited him. The author wrote that after the birth of her first child, Amy grew deeper and more tender; while Laurie became more serious and strong. They both complemented and supported each other because they loved each other and they loved their daughter Beth.

She was great as Amy, I really loved her acting but as a huge Little Women´s fan and I´ve been watching all adaptations and I have to see a film where they give Amy´s character justice, because they all fail to show Amy´s struggles in Aunt March´s house and how she decided to change and become a good person. They also never show when Amy was praised after the incident with May Chester, for example , in second book. I know they can´t add everything to the movies, but I´m surprised in the movies they never adapted that scene where Amy was bullied and she was generous even despite that. I say this because everyone usually hate Amy and she is misunderstood. Also they could hire someone else to act as Amy at first because she was 12 years old at first, like they did in the 1994 version,they changed actresses. However,Florence was great as Amy don´t get me wrong. I just wanted to say this about the directors who always forget that parts. And yes, Amy is my fav character hahahaha.

@@tonkslunahermy2121 yes the 1933, 1949, 1978, 2017 and this adaptation uses the same character to play both ages. They have to use a certain accent or voice for them to play 12 and then at older age, sounds sophisticated and mature. The 1978 and 1994 versions show briefly her struggles with Aunt March, but I would love to see her stand up to May Chester if they plan to do another adaptation for the future

This monologue is just silly ideological modern mantras that cannot be applied to old times. They two talk as if they are modern people talking with the mentality of modern people. In modern capitalist society both, men and women, have to work to generate money, and that changed the roles. In old days they had their own roles, days in which men were not weeping because society didn't let them change their sex, and women were not weeping because they were not into certain activities, basically because such things were not even in their minds. Actually a massive amount of men in the past tried to be good artists and just a tiny amount of them succeeded in being recognised (and I don't see men weeping about not getting recognision), whereas from the very few females that dedicated to art, a big amount of them are recognised. Nowadays victimhood is a wretched too of power.

I like how Laurie falls in love with Amy after she talks about how marriage is an economic proposition. When he fell in love with Jo it was a selfish love, of him just wanting her. With Amy, it almost seems selfLESS, because he wants Amy to be with a man who also loves and respects her, not just a rich one. She almost kind of snaps him out of his ignorance and lolly-gagging. He wants to be a good enough man to be worth her.

I really love how we saw a glimpse of her marriage to Laurie in the films. What we saw completely changed her opinion of marriage in this scene. They were seen as equals with Laurie taking care of their baby as well as she. She also held a certain confidence when she was with him. What's so great is that this was not what was expected at the time. Laurie would have held up to those traditional marriage values. Therefore, it's so refreshing to at least get an inference into what their marriage would be like. This is my most favourite book to movie adaptation.

This scene actually speaks more than just the love tension between Amy and Laurie. When Amy said her talent was just middling talent, she could never achieve the genius level, that hits hard. I have friends in the creative industry, and they have always struggled between two options: keep following your dream to be great, or take a step back and find a decent job. Amy's line shows her most important goal was never to be a great artist as she said when she was a child, it's to be able to provide for her family, the stability. Even these days, when a woman wants to have a child, the stability of her home is still the most important factor.

I have twice attended the Dickens on the Strand Festival in Galveston. Many people dress in the period costume. And, it's fun for a brief period. But, you'd be dragging those pretty skirts through muddy streets and dying of heat exhaustion in the summer. I agree they are pretty to look at but not very practical. Those corsets literally broke ribs, that is why they had fainting couches. But, if you like the period, find you some period festivals. Costumes are easily available on line and you can have fun with it!

I remember reading somewhere that Greta Gerwig wanted Amy and Laurie to have sexual chemistry..like they really wanted f**k each other. It was to show the difference between his relationship with Jo where Laurie adored his childhood friend but it wasn't the sort of desire a married couple would have for each other. As much as people says that Florence Pugh was good at that role, and she was... But... I think she was good as an adult Amy, not the young version, cause she wasn't a child, and Amy in the books has around 12 years old, and her attitude is because of that, because the lines are made for a girl around that age, but Florence in a kid role, made it seems that the character was too immature for a grown woman... So, it seems that she changed because she moved away, but it was because she grew up, cause it was her transition from a girl to a woman

That’s actually pretty interesting to think about. I think during these times people who had the ‘luxury’ of painting usually had help around the house that would typically button them up for the activity. Similar to a corset, for example

@@jaydeerezvani I mean, poor women wore corsets, too. They were made differently depending on whether or not you had the money to have staff to get you in and out of your clothes like that. Dresses, too, with all the buttons being meant to showcase that wealth (like, look at me, I'm so rich I can hire people to help me dress!). But with an apron? Wealthy women wouldn't be wearing their aprons outside the house and they likely wouldn't be painting when company's over, so an apron that you need help getting out of is just about the most frivolous, impractical piece of clothing imaginable. And painting wasn't purely a pastime for the very wealthy. People who couldn't afford servants could still afford to paint on occasion, so painting aprons that were convenient were absolutely a thing. All sorts of stupid crap like this existed back in the day, so I'm not necessarily doubting the costume designer, but it's still a ridiculous invention to design or for anyone to buy.

Clothing for women has never not been made to benefit men. This looks as if it was made purposely for a companion to undo. It lack practicality and it’s inconvenient, so clearly women weren’t considered in the design, despite being the audience. Sounds realistic to me.
