Once the boat was at the point of no return, and she went onto her side, you had her back to upright, and you were back in her, in UNDER TWO MINUTES!!!!! You have to be so satisfied with that result! We are very appreciative of your willingness to to video the process. Please, what is the advantage of the yawl rig in the Ilur, which I see you've chosen the Clinker version of, and I think would be my choice too?

I chose the yawl rig, I was told it would be useful to keep the boat pointing into wind while reefing the main. Not convinced yet, every time I have reefed I have dropped the anchor so I don't have to worry about running into something whilst gathering the sail cloth in. There is a knack to going about in a yawl rig. You need to slacken off the mizzen sheet as your stern reaches pointing into wind, otherwise a tight hauled mizzen can just stall the turn and you have to return to the tack you were on, build up speed and try again. Alternatively you can 'backsail' the main - hold the main forward by the clew and into wind with the tiller away from you. This effectively pushes the boat into reverse gear and the rudder position turns the boat so it is sort of forced to turn into desired tack. I wish I had chosen the Mainseiner or standing lug, much simpler, less string. This is not a sporty boat, comfort and simplicity are what I value most about the ilur. The mizzen in my books is a bit ostentatious and provides little use beyond making the boat look a bit bigger.

Good to see. I have a 14" Kauri clinker (ex NZ Navy trainer) I want to do the Roger Barnes cove hopping. But I need to do some capsize drills

Wasn't expecting you to go right over. She recovered well though. Comforting to know that, as I am in the early stages of building one.

I'm surprised this was possible with the sail up.

It took quite a bit to get her to go over. It looked like with enough bailing you would have self rescued.

was the centreboard case not underwater when the boat was righted? With other words was it not under the water line when the boat was full of water, allowing water to enter the boat and preventing bailing the boat dry?

It looked to me as though by bailing quickly, the centreboard opening was not an issue when getting rid of water, some people fit hand or electric pumps...see Roger Barnes videos as he sails an iLur

He can start bailng, but can be under way and fully functional immediately. He recovered 100% instantly, but for being wet.

Of course, in high wind, which would likely be the conditions in a capsize, the waves continue top swamp the boat once it was upright. But I'm impressed!

In more wind, with 1 or more crew, person on the centerboard can stay with the board when the boat rights. While that person is under the boat, hanging onto the board, one crew goes over the side back into the boat. They balance the boat as the rest of the crew come over the side. Clean up the lines, bail and go. You can also hang onto the other side as crew slides over the opposite side. But in heavier air, it was easy to hang onto the board as the crew got aboard. That save a capsize the other way as the boat comes up.

Francois Vivier mentions that it is useful to keep a rag handy to reduce the flow of water in from the centre board case in a capsize. Roger Brarnes' boat is an earlier version with a CB case top level with the thwarts, the new vesion has a CB case 4" below the thwart to make more room in the boat.
