This was great--and SO beautifully filmed. I am returning to Morning Pages practice after a very long time. Here is a tip that might help anyone with children: I first did Morning Pages about 26 years ago when I was the mother of a three-year old. I DID get up earlier to try to squeeze them in before my daughter arose, but some mornings she bounded out of bed earlier than expected. I found myself getting completely discombobulated by the interruption when I was in "flow." A friend had given me a cap that read "Bloom Where You're Planted" and I started wearing that when I wrote my pages. I explained to my daughter that if she woke up and I had my hat on, she could turn on the TV quietly, but she COULD NOT talk to me. In turn, I promised her that I would wrap up my writing within 10 minutes, make breakfast and give her all of my attention. It worked! You have offered excellent advice. Thank you!

@@Foxsy_Official Thank you! Kids are visual. I found that even telling her I was writing and asking her to let me finish, impacted me on a visceral level--and caused a little knot of resentment--which further interfered with the positive I was trying to implement through my writing. That cap was like a stop light, which even her young mind could grasp. Motherhood is all about thinking creatively as well. :)

Fantastic video, very practical, thank you! Here is a summary (you could add the points to the video description for subsequent viewers): It's 3 pages, stream-of-consciousness, totally private. 1. Get up earlier. 2. Don't look at your phone, computer, read paper, etc. prior to writing. 3. Make it a ritual, something you enjoy doing. 4. *Buy nice supplies*, things you like using, that feel good. The pen must be smooth, write easily. 5. Go outside or open the window. 6. Don't worry about your handwriting. You don't even need to be able to read it, just get it down 7. Don't worry about grammar! 8. Don't worry about having nice rounded, complete thoughts. You can even switch things mid-sentence. If it pops into your head, it needs to get written down. 9. If you use music, listen to ad-free music! 10. Don't let anyone interrupt your writing. This is your time, it's not an indulgence. Make sure you're totally alone, totally into your work. 11. Meditation - consider meditating for a few mins before starting, to center yourself. 12. If you *just can't* do morning pages in the morning, do them in the evening, or any time during the day 13. Possibly the most important: DON'T CENSOR YOURSELF. Know that NOBODY is ever going to read this. You need this space to let out your own unpleasant, bad thoughts. 14. (potentially) Destroy your morning pages after you've written them! If you need that to be free in your writing, do it. The freedom is the important thing. 15. Allow room for mistakes -- you might miss a day, don't stress it. You might miss a week! No problem, just keep starting.

I have restarted morning pages many times over the years, and when I do them they ground me, and when I don’t, I feel scattered and discombobulated. Your pointing out that nobody is criticizing you, helps me. Even if Julia Cameron we’re watching me right now and saying “You’re doing it wrong!” It wouldn’t matter. The important thing for me is just to do it.

No. Please don't do them at night. The author of the book has specifically mentioned that morning pages are supposed to be done in the morning only because if you do them at night, you would actually reflect on a day that can't be changed. And "night pages" would nothing be more than a diary. Well reflections are good in their own way, but they don't serve the purpose of "morning pages".

@Foxsy_Official5 жыл бұрын
That is what she said, you're right. However, this exercise is better done at night than not done at all. Some people wake up absurdly early already and don't have it in them to get up even earlier. I'm not going to tell those people that they simply aren't allowed to benefit from this exercise because it can't be done first thing in the morning! And from my own personal experience, I still feel clearer and more focused even on days when my pages got pushed to later in the day. Yes, you should strive to write in the morning, but any writing is better than no writing.

Shortly after the book was first published, I attended a talk and signing by Julia Cameron. I had a young child at the time and lamented to Julia during the Q&A that it wasn't always possible to write first thing in the morning due to attending to my daughter. She said to "wear Morning Pages like a loose skirt." Although she advocates a more regimented approach in the book--which CAN feel intimidating and rigid--she actually realizes that life can intrude and it's better to get in the writing "whenever" than not at all.

I learned of this in college in 2002 and I tried it a while but never got much out of it, but I have kept a dream diary since age 12 so the first thing on my mind in the morning is the dream I had. I realized the subconscious you are trying to tap during morning pages are the same idea presented to you in your dreams. They both bring inspiration from connections you do not consciously realize.

These tips are just excellent! I’m so glad you added the tip about using a pen that writes nicely, but every single tip is really useful. I’m just going to add a couple for people who are worried about privacy, because it’s invaluable to be able to write without worrying about anyone ever reading them. I have a trusted friend who know that if I die she’s to get my notebooks and destroy them. And if you live with someone and can’t entirely feel confident that they won’t read them, which would suck, I would recommend a lock box. Peace of mind is everything when it comes to writing morning pages. Also, if I’m stuck for a second, I will literally write “pen to paper, pen to paper” or “stream of consciousness” until stuff flows off my pen again, in order to keep the flow and to not overthink. Thank you for sharing your simple but oh-so-useful tips! One last thing-“The Artist’s Way” is an amazing book, with many exercises that are not just for reconnecting with your creativity, but for unblocking emotionally and excavating old garbage. Can’t recommend it enough!

Where do you keep your morning pages? I started this morning. It was very negative, and I feel really guilty and shifty about it never being read? I haven't told anyone I'm doing it. I can't think of a good hiding place. I have already started without a lock, not buying a new book now. I will definitely be in full chicken scratch mode at least
@Foxsy_Official2 ай бұрын
My first several weeks & months of morning pages were quite negative -- that's normal! You gotta get some of the built up junk out of your system before you can move past it. I keep my journals just on the shelf at home, but I feel 100% confident that my partner won't read them. However, I will almost certainly put them in storage or in a locked cabinet in the future when we eventually have kids old enough to get into them (way down the line). Go full chicken scratch for sure! You could also hide the journals behind other books on a shelf, or put them in a shoebox that you label prominently with something boring, like "old tax forms". Keep pushing through the negative and try not to feel guilty! This is a vital part of the process, so keep going!

question. is stream of consciousness about writing your 'inner monologue', or the 'thoughts' that pop into your head (memories, fantasies, visualisations), the feeling/emotions/moods, senses/body sensations, or is it just where your attention goes toward?? or is it like a mish mash of all the above? because oftentimes my inner voice is just speaking gibberish, and then its difficult to capture a thought and put it into words before it becomes another thought. eg, 'memory of X, memory of Y, fantasy of Z, feeling nostalgic, physically tired, smell aroma of coffee... inner voice comes and says 'banana banana banana lamp'' usually all of that happens at once ^^ and i have no idea what to write down lol and if i let my inner voice take over, it will just make up nonsense rhymes all day..
@Foxsy_Official4 жыл бұрын
For me, it's a mish mash of all the above! Sometimes I'll write random thought after random thought -- then I'll find a thread to pull, and I can often find myself focusing on that one random thing for a half page or more. Then it's random stuff again. Maybe you need to get your "banana banana banana lamp" out of your head during Morning Pages so it doesn't haunt you during the day! 😂 I love your description of the train of thought, it's so accurate.

@Foxsy, can I write scripture, lyrics, or poetry that comes to mind?” A lot of songs seep into my consciousness with ear worms. I realize they’re not actually my thoughts. But if they come to mind, is that considered stream of consciousness? I’m new to this. Thanks. Oh, and if I listen to music, it should be instrumental. Right? And, of course, not a cover that I know the words to. Or does that matter?
@Foxsy_Official Жыл бұрын
You can definitely write lyrics and such! That totally counts as stream of consciousness. As for what music you listen to, I'd say try whatever feels right and see how it goes. If you find that lyrical music doesn't distract you, that's great! I can't listen to lyric music while I write, but that's just me. In the end, this is your practice, so do what feels good for you!

I have a question. Is it okay, to do morning pages once a week? Or are they only effective, if you do it every day? I know, you siad, it's okay to scip a day or even week, but I'm talking about the effectivness,if it's still as healing if you do it only once a week
@Foxsy_Official4 жыл бұрын
Journaling is always going to be a good thing to do for yourself. It's been backed by all kinds of scientific research and it will make you a more thoughtful, balanced person. However, for the Morning Pages technique, you really do have to do it as close to daily as possible to really get the benefits. If you only write once a week, you'll probably only stick to surface level topics when you write. But when you write every day, you end up digging past the surface and getting into deeper issues and topics. Writing infrequently will be better than no writing at all, but the best results will come with regular writing.

Question... do you stop at 3 pages even if you are on fire with writing? Do you keep going if your mind keeps throwing thoughts at you?
@Foxsy_Official3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely recommend writing more if you feel like you've got more to say! Sometimes you are overwhelmed with big life events or big emotions and you just need to get it all out. If it feels cathartic, go for it!

I saw two videos that said morning pages got the worst part of them,in which they can't recommend it, what's your intake on that?
@Foxsy_Official3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts are that it won't work for everyone, and that's okay! You should give it a try for a few weeks before giving up, though. It's always going to take time to get into the meat of a new habit. If you've tried for a while and it doesn't work for you, then stop doing them and try another technique!
@BradyMartinOfficial2 жыл бұрын
How long does it take to do them? Like 30 minutes?
@Foxsy_Official2 жыл бұрын
About that, yeah! Some days I write them in about 20 minutes, some days I take closer to 45 minutes. It depends on how distracted I get lol

What if you find that you've done more than 3 pages or that you want to keep going when the 3 pages are done?
@Foxsy_Official3 жыл бұрын
If you feel like continuing to write, then continue to write! There's something that wants out, so no sense in keeping it in. I've had some emotional times where I write beyond the three pages because it was just so cathartic.
@SewWhittle4 жыл бұрын
How/where do you suggest someone write and be absolutely sure it will be kept private? That has always been my biggest hindrance, so hence, never truly write what I feel.
@Foxsy_Official4 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about where you can be while you write your pages, you can try the bathroom or your car (if you have one). If you're talking about storage, then you have a few options. As I talked about in the video, you can opt to destroy them immediately. But if you'd rather keep them, you can find a good hiding space somewhere that you know no one will check, like on a very high shelf, in the basement, etc. Perhaps you could get a locking mini safe, like the kind disguised as bibles or encyclopedias. Or you could hollow out an old textbook that no one will ever want to read and slot your journal inside, then stick it back on the shelf. Basically, there are lots of different options! You just gotta think outside the box.

Is it helpful to go through your morning pages to try to figure out where those thoughts may be coming from?
@Foxsy_Official6 жыл бұрын
Morning pages are a bit different than any other kind of journaling in that there are a couple of guidelines. One is to not go back and reread them.
@Yarncraftswithmakayla6 жыл бұрын
@@Foxsy_Official okay, I suffer with anxiety and OCD and my OCD is based around obsessive thoughts. And even though these thoughts don't nessecarily mean anything to my life I obsess on them and ask why I'm having them. That's why I was asking, so just writing the thoughts all down helps?
@Foxsy_Official6 жыл бұрын
For me, writing down the thoughts that swirl through my head helps me pluck them out of the thought tornado and pin them down. Once they're on paper, I feel like I don't need to keep overthinking about them because it's on paper now, not an abstract thought. However, I don't experience OCD, so I don't know if it would work the same way. If you have a therapist who you work with regarding your OCD, I would suggest discussing the Morning Pages with him or her to see how to best utilize them for you. I hope that helps!

I have an amazing thing to share.. It's 6.03 a.m. in my part of the world {GOA, India} and I just finished writing my MORNING PAGES. Today I had an out-of-the-world experience.. Something was bothering me for the last few months, it was like a thorn in the flesh {if you know what I mean}. I decided to ask for the solution with my MORNING PAGES and I did.. And I was shocked at what happened next.. MY THOUGHTS GAVE ME THE ANSWER. I mean, it literally did... And I went on writing it down like there was no tomorrow and the moment I finished writing it, I felt PEACE flowing through me. I was instantly at PEACE and I knew it wouldn't bother me anymore. THE THORN WAS OUT OF MY FLESH... Such a DIVINE experience... AMAZING...!!! 😍😍😍❤ 🙌

To establish the habit, for me what made the difference was: - writing in bed. If I get out of bed, I get into work mode, and I'll never do morning pages then. - getting a Moleskine diary, with one page for a day, and just write one page to start. Having the clear visual reference of whether I wrote every day has been very useful in motivating me into keeping up the habit. Also, just one page is fine and better than nothing: three pages are a lot when you're starting, and at least for me, it kept me from starting the habit for years. I'm still writing one page, but as I'm getting more used I'm feeling more confident on expanding to more pages, probably still keeping the first page on the Moleskine while keeping another journal at hand for when I need more space.

I just finished my first week of morning pages. On day 4 I watched this and realized how much I was censoring my thoughts, grammar and clarity. Your statement of don't censor, keep the pen moving, and tear them up if you want, was transforming for me. The last 3 days have been so much better and quicker (20 minutes instead of 90!). Thanks for the great tips!

I'm so glad this helped you! After this video, I heard a tip from someone to not break for paragraphs. Once I heard that, I noticed that I was constantly breaking for paragraphs and wasting lines on the page! Now I write a huge wall of text, which helps me keep the stream of consciousness and has the added benefit of making it way harder to read. Maybe that can help you continue to think about the ways that you are pausing and breaking your thought stream. Good luck and happy writing!

Thanks for this, quality of pen and paper was a game changer for me. Ambient music, natural sounds, or silence is a massive help too. Isolation without interruption from people or phone notifications is also important. Final takeaway is writing without judgment, dont think or judge or apply quality control, just write. Thanks for posting this... I’m excited to see what other changes they will bring to my life... that one habit is truly life-altering... Your video will actually help me out because I was using big pages like 8 1/2 x 11 (actually I was using the pages in the exercise manual that came with her book) and this ritual was taking me more than an hour every morning so if you find it helpful with a smaller notebook then that means that three pages of those notebooks are sufficient to get to the creative stuff because it’s true that the really creative stuff comes right of the end once you’re cleared out all of the other complaining from your brain... maybe I can get my time down closer to 30 or 40 minutes which would actually work out better for me - That way maybe I could keep doing it which is what really matters

#12 Good point, for those who work the night shift :-) Anyway . . . My take on the concept for Morning Pages is that one is is mentally in a state between awake and dreaming, so that there is a better opportunity for the uninhibited subconscious to be at a higher operating level than it otherwise would be.

I started morning pages when my life kind of was at the lowest point. I didn't have anyone to talk to and honestly i didn't really trust anyone. But since I still wanted to get things off my mind, I thought I would give it a try. In the beginnig i wrote 3-7 pages every morning and it made me realize how long i must have kept all my thoughts and how full my mind actually was. There were so many things i had to speak off of my soul. After a few weeks i started to have a hard time even filling the 3 pages and honestly, it makes me so proud of myself. Seeing this difference shows me how much i grew and how morning pages helped me getting rid of all the bad thoughts that where eating me up for months. And reading all of my entries again Shows me how happy i got over the time. I deeply recommend morning Pages or evening pages to everyone. Its the purest kind of therapy and it gives you the chance to be totally honest to yourself. And im sorry for my english. Its not my native language
