I once spent a warm summer night on the boardwalk of Coney Island after watching some fireworks. While sitting at the isolated end of the boardwalk, I listened to this wonderful tune being played by a guy with his amp and guitar. This song with the sound of ocean waves in the background in the dead of night and absence of all other people is a memory that I will never forget.

Screwed up childhood where me and my father(a navy man)fought all the time. From the age of 9 until I was 17, my only real relationship with the man was extreme arguing. A ten year power struggle that formed more than my share of demons that I travel with to this day. I'm 41 years old and this video hits me like a bullet everytime I watch it.
@daveross4347 жыл бұрын
Just let the shit from your childhood go. Think of all those years you wasted because you couldn't and wouldn't just let go of that shit. Your parents are just fucking humans, you know? I feel pity for you and feel sad for all those wasted years. Yeah, you finally made it through but at what cost.

Jesus christ man, I was just trying to give you some perspective on it. Sorry we all weren't here a year ago waiting for Sean Godbehere to post. The beauty of the internet is we can have these fleeting moments over weeks and months and years... sorry not all perspective is tied up with a bow just like how Sean Godbehere wants it. Yikes man, might want to pull down those defenses; I can see the shit is still strong with you.

@covelatedspire427 жыл бұрын
Sean Godbehere I often find myself listening to songs like these when in an internal power struggle. Sure it's hypocritical "listen to sad music when you're depressed" but it allows me to really think my thoughts through and see what is and what could've been, accepting where I am now and how to push through it, how to make myself stronger as an individual. Thank you for your story, however brief it was, I can relate. The true test in life is how we deal with the negative, how we don't let it take control of us for we are better men than that. I'm currently 16 and had my fair share of family as well as personal troubles. But really all we can do is look forward and not let the worse of ourselves get the better of us.

i think this video is about moving on. the little girl alone in the field represents a broken child- a young girl who has endured lonely, horrible trials. she find comfort in the old mans house but still seems troubled- representing that even in comparability, her memories and past experiences (the scarecrows) still follow her and give her nightmares. so, she leaves her circle of safety (the old man's house) to try to finally get away from her demons (the boat ride). but alas, she turns to find that her demons still follow close behind. so at the end when she sits down and hugs the scarecrows, this represents her finally making peace with her past and painful memories. :)

For all of those who are wondering this video was made using clips from a 13 minute short called Julia. The actress you see in this video is named Giulia Taverna. The short is basically about a young girl who is sent by her mother to live with her grandfather, against her will, in the countryside. As in a typical film the trip turns out to be something far from which she expected. It was released in 2004 and played at a film festival and the director is Daniel Wirtberg. It is a Czech film.

I found the film on the writer/director's Vimeo page. Daniel Wirtberg is his name, and the film on there is called Opatrne! (Careful!). There are no scarecrows in the film though. Although he also has this Little Dragon video on there too. Maybe he didn't end up using those parts, and then repurposed them for the music video?

I think if you look at this more abstractly (as music videos are usually meant to be interpreted), you'll see it's about trying to escape the inevitability of adulthood. When the girl is young and has the comfort of home close to her, she emulates the adults: she poses like the scarecrow, and she also paints the model ships like her father. But when she's older and alone, seemingly far from home, she tries to resist the pull of time. When she "embraces" the scarecrow at the end, it's an act of surrender; her own exhaustion has defeated her.

i guess the child was going through things, and trying to understand her surroundings. she started seeing manifestations of her thoughts/fears, the scarecrow wasn't a real being but to her it was, she "lost her grip" on reality. we see her age so rapidly perhaps because she started running and has been running from her fears for so long, that now shes here a grown young adult, and yet shes still running and every time she looks back she STILL sees her fears RIGHT behind her. everywhere she looks, she cant escape them. she even sets sail to go far away from anyone else and anything, and yet secludes herself on a boat with the things shes been running from for so long: herself. you cannot escape your mind, only understand it and come to terms with it.

what i got from the video was a girl fighting her inner demons (the scarecrows).. it could be the detachment from her father, or a death (notice we don't see a mom throughout the video), or both, but in her childhood we see them surfacing/made apparent. as she gets older she tries to run from her demons at the farm, only to carry them with her, and in the end embraces her demons and mistakes realizing she can't change the past. i could be COMPLETELY wrong here, but thats my view!

It's the same girl. She is an Italian actress.They used footage of a movie she was in as a kid and used her again when she was older to film this video. It was the same director. Her name is Guilaia Taverna. The short film is called "Julia". The Director is Daniel Wirtberg

I love art in tbe sense that the artist offers their creation. And people interpret it in all sorts of different ways. But that never subtracts from what the art actually is. The art stands, regardless of anyone's opinion of it. I love that. That's powerful.
