It’s always so nice to see the city you’ve been living in for so many years trough the eyes of an outsider. Makes me value the day to day things that are nowadays so normal and unexciting to me way more again. 😊

Pro tip: In Germany, you don't necessarily have to look for an ATM, because in (almost) all supermarkets where you can pay with your card (Apple Pay, etc.), you can withdraw additional cash (up to €200) at the checkout. Simply say before paying that you want extra cash. The money will then be added to the bill and handed to you at the checkout.

Jaenischpark, Oevelgönne, Altes Land with the half-timbered houses and so much more ;) Oh yes and about the "missing high-rise buildings" -> no high-rise building is higher than the highest church tower; I'm just not sure if this is in the building regulations or an unwritten law :) Even the new high-rise buildings that are to be built at Diebsteich train station are “only” 60 and 90 meters high. As a rule, only chimneys, transmission masts and the like are higher than the St. Nikolai Tower and the other churches. Although a high-rise building with a height of 245 meters is planned soon. -> I don't think it's good, something like that spoils the overall picture.

Things i can reccomend for visiting Hamburg if you stay longer. The Miniaturwunderland, its the biggest modelrailway you can visit, it streches over multiple floors and has a great detail. If you want to see all you can plan a whole day for it) Alter Elbtunnel, Its the first tunnel crossing the elbe, its right beside the "landungsbrücken" The Harbour. There are harbour drives you can book to get a tour around but you can also explore the harbour by public transport on your own via the ferries.

The Speicherstadt is actually host to a lot of Hamburg's Coffee and Tea culture because many of Germany's biggest importers settled there and still have their offices there to this day, all dating back to the Hanse days. The place you went to, the aptly named Speicherstadt Coffee actually has (in my humble little opinion) the best coffee beans in Germany. They have dozens of different roasts so there's something there for everyone. The beans are actually Demeter approved which is just about the most rare seal of approval you can get in terms of organic foods, meaning from the farming process to how they are roasted, everything is checked with a pretty anal standard for quality, so you actually know something is worth it's high cost when you see that green Demeter Organic label on there.

As others have said before, the DOM is pretty much the biggest carnival of the year, like a state fair would be in the US except it happens more than once a year and stays around for a while both times. If it wasn't for the damage that the winter weather would cause, I'm pretty sure we would keep it around all year long, hard to get tired of it ever.

I love your obsession with coffee quality. One thing that makes Hamburg special is how all the different groups of people share a lot of the same spaces. You saw it at Fischmarkt with those who got up early and those who stayed up late. Reeperbahn has theaters, strip clubs and live music bars on the same street. You have top tier restaurants in the most alternative neighborhoods. Hamburg is one of the cities with the most millionaires in Germany, but also a centre for leftist activism and underground culture.

We actually have two botanical gardens, the old one Planten and Blomen (Dutch name btw) and the slightly newer and smaller Loki-Schmidt-Garden, named after one of our cities heroes, who was also the wife of former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt. It's a small drive outside of the city center, but completely worth it in my opinion. Inside there's Café Schmidt, which has like 4 locations in all of town and they're all in the west side, so going to the garden and getting the opportunity to go to the Café is pretty much worth it on its own, even without considering how cool the garden is. There's also plenty of other things to see on the west side and best of all, you can get there so easily by taking a quick boat trip down the Elbe from Landungsbrücken to Teufelsbrück and then the garden ist just 3 bus stops or a 15 minute walk from there.

As a local, try walking around more often and consciously decide to take another route than last time. I work in St. Pauli and once or twice a week eat lunch at Gänsemarkt. Sometimes I walk through Planten un Blomen, sometimes through Johannes-Brahms-Platz, sometimes Großneumarkt ... suddenly you find yourself in streets like Peterstraße or Bäckerbreitengang, which look like straight out of 1800. One step sideways and you're in Speckstraße in the middle of the alternative scene. I can go to the same location 8 times a month and have walked 16 routes and never once did the same twice.

2:04 Heh, living in hamburg back then (til about 2018) in such a case, i would check a possible alternative route ... and if none is available, just start walking along the bus route.. Depending on where in hamburg, one can walk easily 1 up to 3 stations within 10 minutes and then still easily catch the following bus. ;)

@@travelforphoebeYou're welcome. I loved it... While the hamburg you experienced is a very different one from way back then ... it's still essentially the same spirit.... It's just a bit more touristy than it was for the port and it's workers as it was 30 years ago. ;) Your video actually gave me a nice feeling about the different hamburg of today .... which, in case of look and feel, isn't that much different after all. ;) Just grown up .. adapted to the new millenium. ;)

P.s.: i'm 47 years old and in my childhood age, i was around with my mother and my two sisters, let's say in the late 1980ies ... to actually buy freshly caught fish directly from the fishing boat. The Fishmarkt was always and already a very rich if not outright overwhelming experience... and it never lost that part of it's character... even if it changed deeply in many ways over the decades. ;)

I definitely think visiting Hamburg in the summer is the right call btw. because it gets miserable here during any of the darker seasons. Even the christmas markets as much as I love them don't really compare to what other cities have, even within this area. The one on the Reeperbahn is fun because it's basically the red light adult version, it's called "Santa Pauli" because it's in the St. Pauli neighborhood and the Santa joke explains itself. But I do think that you get a lot more mileage out of your visit during the summer, even if it's more crowded because so many of the sights are outdoor things, that's why even us locals get immensely depressed during the winter with there not being a ton to do indoors. There's a handful of things that are still fun for tourists during the winter, but obviously when everyone flocks there because it's all the things you even can do, it becomes a lot less fun.

I'm actually going to Hamburg for the first time for the Christmas markets in a couple of weeks. Would you mind mentioning the things you think are worth doing during the winter for tourists? I'm definitely going to check out Speicherstadt Coffee you mentioned in another comment. Thanks!

@@adriankelly781 Miniature Wunderland is a famous year-round exhibit of model landscapes. They are constantly expanding and building new pieces. It's phenomenally interesting for people of all ages and probably the N1 thing I would recommend anyone to do during their stay. Tickets can be a bit dicey, but there is plenty of information about it online. The Zoo has had a "Tropenhaus" for a while now, which is basically an Aquarium but extended to also included all manner of other tropical animals like lizards, snakes, frogs, etc. which is really worth the time and a great thing to do on rainy days. Once again, tickets can be a bit of an issue because afaik it's tricky to order them online or in advance which can result in having to queue up outside during bad weather, but that can be circumvented by just going there on a weekday usually. The harbor boat tours are incredible and plenty of them are heated and under a glass roof now, so they're worth doing in the winter as well, not like that harbor changes much through the seasons... As far as nighttime entertainment, pick your poison. It's pretty much all indoors anyways. There's clubs, bars etc. in a few trendy locations (not really my scene but again, plenty of easy to find articles on the web about it). Personally I would recommend checking out the theater and concert scene though if you're into that. Winter is a great time to go to the Staatsoper or, if you can manage to get a ticket, even the Elbphilharmonie. That being said, if that's not for you, there are plenty of other events in places like the Laeiszhalle that are worth checking out. What I love about it is that you won't need to necessarily know the language to enjoy it like you would with most other forms of theater (though those can be fantastic as well and places like the FABRIK have plays in English and other languages as well). I also think just checking out some of the green areas around town can be underrated in the winter, as long as you can deal with the flaky weather (it likes to change up on short notice). Because places like the Planten and Blomen botanical garden are absolutely worth strolling through if you have an hour or so, still plenty of nice landscaping even when the trees ain't green. The other botanical garden, Loki-Schmidt-Garten is a bit of a ways out (about 25 minutes by train from downtown) but they have an entirely new lighting exhibit this year that looks fairly promising from the concept art I've seen. Quite pricey though, especially considering the botanical gardens are usually entirely free to attend. Let me know if you would also like some food recommendations, cause that's a whole other thing.

As a Bavarian (south Germany) I immedialtely fell in love with Hamburg. Maybe I've been there 20 times. I´d not buy at Starbucks and not buy coffee in a paper cup. I prefer the porcelain at an outside table with a nice view. And I like walking in Hamburg. Or rent a bicycle. From the center it is only a few minutes ride up the Alster and you will find yourself in quiet, green nature. And - with just normal precautions - you fearlessly can have fun at the Reeperbahn as a solo girl until the next morning. It is rather safe. The police is present, even if you don´t see them. In all my years I´ve never experienced a really dangerous situation. In case there is a scary person, draw attention to yourself and several people will immediately protect you.

The announcement at 6:19 said "... is over at 9 :30. We thank you for your visit and hope you had a pleasant shopping experience (it said" that you shopped good and inexpensive, but that doesn't translate well"). The organizer (didn't catch the name) and the merchants wish you a pleasant jouney home and a nice Sunday. In Hamburg we say "tschüß" (a reference to a german song) and come back soon to the Altona Fish Market. At least that is my translation. The guy said something about "sweetheart its enough", but I am not 100% sure 😅 German Words:...um 9: 30 Uhr beendet. Wir bedanken uns für Ihren Besuch und hoffen das Sie but und günstig einkaufen konnten. Die Aufsicht? und Händler wünschen Ihnen einen angenehmen Heimweg und noch einen schönen Sonntag. In Hamburg sagt man Tschüss und kommen sie bald wieder zum Altona Fischmarkt.

Not sure who told you to take the Bus to the Fisch Markt, but the actual fastest connection would have literally just been the S1, S3 or U3 from Berliner Tor to Landungsbrücken, which also gets you a really nice walk along the harbor. Usually busses are never the actual fastest way to get anywhere, we pretty much only use them as stop gaps for spaces without train stations or in areas where the train takes a weird route that essentially turns a train ride into a detour. They are pretty scenic at times, and that might tempt you into preferring them over trains, but honestly some trains like the U3 line are equally as gorgeous in terms of views. Important thing to keep in mind next time you visit :-) Also bus drivers in the urban parts of town (as opposed to the suburbs) rarely wait for passengers running up to the bus stop because they have a tight schedule to keep. Just last month one actually waved back at me and drove off as I was waving for him to wait. It would have been a 10 second wait for him at most and he ended up being a dick about it, so in essence, never trust busses. Not running was the right decision.

Oh now I get why you didn't go to Landungsbrücken before the market. Makes sense in that order. If you're in a bind for time though, remember that the other way around is technically more time efficient.

You were lucky to come at a time when the Dom was in town. I recall it used to come twice a year. If you want a REAL panoramic view of Hamburg, go on that Ferris Wheel -- at night! I went with my step daughter and a friend after school one day, and it was the one and only time in my life when I was on a roller coaster in a blizzard! Gotta love the German spirit! ;~) And if you're gonna have some sweets, you gotta try the Spritzkuchen with a nice coffee. Sehr lecher! Coming from Chicago, I really considered Hamburg my second home, one of my own choosing.

The market supervision and the traders wish you a pleasant journey home and a nice Sunday. In Hamburg we say Tschüss (goodbye) and come back soon to the Altona Fish Market." You did not show the traditional barkers. That is the most important thing at the fish market. Good-humoured shouting traders who always have a silly joke on their lips. Next time you visit my city, go to hamburg South, veddel and Wilhelmsburg. Or to Horn and Billstedt, including Mümmelmansberg (eastern part). That is where the real local experience is. You only went to the city core, which is mainly for expensive shopping, seeing water and most important of all mostly made for tourism. You haven't even seen a quarter of Hamburg. You can spend an entire day, just exploring the local train routes. Trust me, it's beautiful.
