Renae just a thought...I have to say this . Please don't get tunnelvision w JUST the diabetic food prep that you forget about high blood pressure too- as shredded cheese and the added salt in recipes and salad dressings, mayonnaise, pasta sauces, pickles etcc... and the cream cheese etc..meatsticks are full of sodium. Geez-Only 1/2 cup of that Classico pasta sauce is about 1/3 of all the sodium a person w High BP should have in a day. Start tracking his ans your sodium intake too. Yes-Excessive thirst aling with unplanned weightloss has always been a redflag signal re diabetes.

You are doing a great job with your husband's meals. I have been diabetic for years. Of course, follow your doctor's advice. Just a few suggestions: half plate of non starchy vegetables, any type of meat, healthy fats, nuts, avacodos, etc. You may want to make your own salad dressings the store bought ones have sugar. Has your doctor recommended a dietitian that specializes in diabetes. That is a great resource. Stay encouraged God has it. Love your videos. Have a great day!

😊 A nephrologist (he's a kidney Dr from India) told me last week a nearly full renal diet works better for getting his diabetic & dialysis patients on track). I am so discouraged to see my BF suffer from lack of food choices. I guess portion control is all I can help him with.

I found that if you cut it (the squash) in slices about an inch or so round and lay flat, it dries out better since they are smaller pieces and not so liquidy. It pulls apart much easier when its drier . I can eat it more without gagging lol.. I am not a squash person but I can do it that way. I am diabetic too. Been watching you for over a year and love your videos. I found I had same problem could not get my numbers down. Carrots, onions do have carbs so I limit those as well as tomatoes. I make thighs, steaks and all meats and have green beans and salads with meats and it started coming down good. No pasta, rice, taters, bread and I saw numbers coming down after a week or so. Onions do have carbs which I just found out. Smashburgers or burgers with no buns are awesome. shrimp and steak I love too. I make rotiserrie thighs and chicken every other day and just stock the fridge so I can grab and go as well as salads I premake in serving sizes I will just grab when I come in from garden working! It takes time. I love your videos so much. Its alot of work but I am seeing the difference. I went down from A1c of 13 to 6.3 so do not give up

I love chicken salad... have you ever tried using the dried cranberries in it? It's also very good with some curry powder (a mild one), toasted pecans (chopped) along with the grapes. So good!! Sometimes ya need a little sweet in the spaghetti sauce to offset the acid of the tomatoes... we use unsweetened applesauce when we make our meat sauce to can. It's not cane sugar ... it's from fruit! My heart goes out to you as you embark on your new journey. My mother was a diabetic for almost 30 years before God called her home. Sometimes I think the "Diabetic Diet" is one of the healthiest meal plans out there. Other than straight sugar... I don't believe complete food groups are eliminated from the menu. It's just how much and when. You guys will figure it out together!

Zero sugar often means higher carbs. Have you tried making chaffles yet? As a diabetic you can eat whatever doesn’t spike your sugars. I can’t eat white potatoes or corn. Grapes and bananas spike my sugar too. It takes time but you’ve got this.

Protein with each meal and snack will more evenly metabolize your carbs. It has been suggested to aim for 200 grams of carbs evenly distributed thru the day. Consider your carbs as sugar, so sugar free does not mean that you are not consuming a food that metabolizing as a sugar

I love hearing your kitty begging for human food…I’d say John is kitty’s favorite house occupant!!! Pets are good for keeping stress down so the blood sugars will settle down too. I am curious as to how you buy black pepper. Small bulk or large bulk? I use ALOT of pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika to help with the no salt, no potassium, no phosphorus diet Jack has to have. I’m learning that if I don’t think about the no salt I handle the blandness better☺️. I buy spices in medium to large bulk sizes but you might just have a heavier hand than I with pepper. Looking forward to seeing how your garden goes this growing season. Well, let’s just say that the garden tours give us a glimpse of the chickens which I just love seeing. Happy cooking, happy gardening!!!:):):)

My husband is diabetic. Wholemeal bread, whole wheat pasta brown rice etc. The body takes longer to break down so no rush of sugar. Certain cheeses are better than others such as mozzarella parmasan and feta cheese. Tinned fruit is okay as long that it is in fruit juice., but you must be careful about how much as of sugar content, We found as a treat he can even eat chocolate especially strawberries dipped in plai chocolate. Everything in moderation. The doctor has been really pleased with his progress and his sugar levels are under control. It's made us both eat healthier.

Hello John and Renee! So happy I found you-- I've been a diabetic for going on almost 40 years. I was diagnosed with Type II at 30 years old, but doctor said I'd probably had it for 4-5 years before. With both my sons, I had gestational diabetes. Try using Coconut Palm sugar in your recipes, because it has a lower glycemic index than white sugar. I have always been able to eat cheese without a blood sugar spike, but I'm 65 and forgot I can't eat too much dairy and got really sick! LOL My KZbin channel is just starting, and I hope to do as well as you do!! Take care and Be Well folks! 🙂

If you want to make sweet treats for him, my suggestion would be use monk fruit. It doesn't have that after taste. His PCP should have him on some kind of insulin if you can't get his sugar regulated.

I really enjoy watching the two of you together and figuring it out. You don't have to worry about one number that is out of range. The doctors don't, either. They are looking for trends, or patterns, in the numbers. Once you identify some of those, you can tweak what you're doing to get the best result. Diabetics can eat whatever they want to, it's about portion control. More fruits and vegetables, less protein - but don't cut it out altogether. You'll see a big difference when you learn more about how to use the information on food labels. I was amazed at how much I could eat of the right things. Exercise is a great way to help control blood sugar. Perhaps you would enjoy walking together? People here often walk at the mall, especially if it's too hot/cold. It doesn't have to be a lot. Anything will help. Just do what is comfortable for you. Short walks a couple of times a day WILL help. Also, snacks are important. I eat three meals and three snacks daily - no skipping either one. This helps to avoid blood sugar spiking or bottoming out. I use the Shipt service at Meijer. Type "diabetic friendly snacks" in the search bar, and just look for what sounds good. Many of the results are individually packaged snacks that are already the appropriate serving size, which is 100-150 calories for a snack, and 3-4 carbs. Amazon is great for this as well. One thing my doctor told me is that it's better to stay away from sweeteners like Stevia, because those will spike blood sugar just like regular sugar, so it's best to have what you want, and just be mindful of how much you're consuming. One thing that surprises a lot of people is that stress and illness will affect your blood sugar. Wishing you both the best on this new journey you're taking!

Make sure Mr. Wayna drinks lots of water. And watch portion sizes like that huge strawberry the other day. Look at liquids he drinks...soda, coffee with sugar, things like that that might raise his blood sugar. Research lower carb breads maybe. Less pasta and potatoes and more meat (or any protein). Take a walk every day (or on a nice spring evening). Sugar free jams and jellies. Just look at what you normally eat and see what you can tweak. I'm sure all your friends here can give you some recipes that have worked well for them. And maybe your local medical facility (ask your doctor) may have diabetic classes that your insurance will pay for. It's a complicated disease so don't get frustrated. It'll take awhile to get this in order. In the meantime, Mr. Wayna, behave yourself. All the best. And that salad looks wonderful. Remember while you're taking care of John, take care of yourself too. What would he ever do without you? And spaghetti squash is a great choice. I also make a zucchini lasagna using cottage cheese. I'm absolutely positive, however you have to adjust your menus, they will be delicious!
