In China, the 20th Century was marked by dramatic social and political changes. It saw the end of the Qing Dynasty, the emergence of regional warlord governments, a Japanese military occupation, the Chinese Civil War and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was equally eventful in the fields of music, painting, drama and literature. Behind this transformation was a group of remarkable individuals, men who persevered despite national and personal tragedies. A new ten-part documentary series explores their contributions and legacies.

Liu Haisu was clearly a very good painter. Whether he was great or not can hardly be told from this documentary, as they barely show any of his paintings and have whole 51 minutes to do so. Good grief, we get more information about his wives than his works. A compete aside; there was something about this Chinese series and it's presenter, and I've just realized what it is. It's giving me flashback vibes of way back when one of my school friends would drag me off to see 7th Day Adventist 'archeology' featurettes. 'Let us tell you the truth with our soft music and even dulcet tones.' "Yes, Yes, ...it all makes sense. The end of the world is here and Rome is the great and evil Babylon.......................Wait! What?!"

I'm sorry to see that some people feel like this documentary didn't meet their expectations. That being said, I will explain why I like it very much. As much as I love seeing the works of one of my favorite Chinese painters, I also love hearing about their life, and seeing where they lived and how it all started. But to be fair, you'd have to be a die hard art historian to care deeply not only about the art, but the artist as well. This was clearly made by great care and hard working people, AND the information was top notch. Liu is an artist not many talk about sadly, and I feel this did him great justice! Great job perspective 👍 I'm never disappointed!

Can someone explain to me if he was 98 years old, how was he celebrating his 100th birthday? Is it something cultural to celebrated it before really happening?

The documentary is highly based off his life more than his works. What is mostly shown is his hometowns, the places he went, his art school and the places he went for artistic inspiration, because that was all part of his life. They show some of his works that had something to do with what is discussed such as the yellow mountain, which became the main focus of most of his later works. Sorry you felt like this wasn't for you dear friend. Hope you can find something more suitable.

@matt the documentary is poor and deficient. the life of an artist is linked to his work, and the renaissance happenned in the 15th century, i guess chinese paintors are a bit late for that movement

Chinese art epochs are totally different from western ones, doesn't make sense to compare them in this way. @@videoloopproject

There is nothing here that would be of the least interest to a Chinese art connoisseur. We need to see brush, ink, paper, ink stones and learn about historic reflections in brushwork.

Compared to the inspirational studies of, for example, the impressionists, where the paintings form the basis of the narrative and most of the time is spent studying their formation, inspiration and execution, regrettably this doco doesn't compare and is quite dull and boring. I didn't see any art work (among the very limited selection shown) that would put it in a league of its own, it all seemed highly derivative. And whereas, citing the impressionist series again, but we could refer to the baroque artists also, the studies re-inspire one's own desire to create, make you think, make you marvel, this did absolutely nothing. We have no idea whether he was a master and every reason to believe he was at best a competent journeyman.
