Cornell MacNeil (September 24, 1922 - July 15, 2011) was an American operatic baritone known for his exceptional voice and long career with the Metropolitan Opera, which spanned 642 performances in twenty-six roles.
My teacher sang with Macneil several times as did my teacher's brother. MacNeil had a huge voice with tremendous core to his sound. A very strong lower register and great falsetto development.
As a true Verdi baritone his lower register was dark like a bass and his top notes were like a dramatic tenor. This voice type is virtually extinct today. Not do to any physical reasons are lack of talent, but rather do to lack of technique and poor vocal training.
