A study published in the journal Plant, Cell & Environment found that plants exposed to direct sunlight had higher rates of photosynthesis than those exposed to indirect sunlight, even when the total amount of light received was the same. There are a litany of other studies with similar results.
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
Plants are different than corals and seem to be more dependent on red spectrum, but point taken. I may have overstated it in the live decision the point we were trying to get across is the hobby is so focused on recreating these super strong single points of light that we forget about the horizon-to-horizon source of blue light from the Sky and some of the most successful lighting solutions like t5 banks. So it is not that direct sunlight isn't important, it's that diffused blue light from all angles is important and in our application of a reef tank may just be more important.

@kylem.4114 Жыл бұрын
Most of the points you point out were reasons why many of us were super resistant to switching to LEDs in the first place. A full spectrum 10-14K halide with PC/VHO 420nm fill lights provided the kind of spectrum and coverage you are advocating. But all our customers wanted slick LEDs with huge PAR. No conversation about spectral analysis could get them away from monochromatic 450/460nm "marine blue" lighting. I guess better late than never.
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
It's true that the information has been out there for a long time. We just need to keep sharing until a critical mass demands better. Part of the future is getting past LED , Halide or T5's. The conversation is "what does good to great light look like?"
@kylem.4114 Жыл бұрын
@@BRStv I totally agree. I don't really care which tech ends up being the best for the hobby. At this point LED seems likely to make the most sense. It just seemed that the transition to LEDs focused on all the "wrong" features in my opinion, which you mentioned in the video. I was talking Peridinin-Chlorophyll protein complex and customers was like, "but does it make lightning storms?". Thanks for making this appeal to consumers. I never felt that us LFSs could really influence the design by complaining to sales reps, educating customers, or posting on forums. Your efforts here have the potential to make some changes in the market moving forward. I'm excited to see what companies come up with when they re-prioritize lighting features.

I was lucky enough to get 2x Straton's & a Kessil in the middle for shimmer - What a fantastic light. Super sleek. This is a bit more about how the tech works with a couple real-life examples. I wouldn't consider any of the lights that were not part of this discussion as bad options. Last time I did this (9 years ago) we tried a variety of lights and hands down t5's were the best. Under LEDs they dwindled and under t5, they thrived. Back then we would have chalked it up to t5's are just better. However, now we know LED lights were just not built or used poorly back then. Pick something that covers a wide area, has a wide spectrum and tune it with a par meter. Alternatively, pick a t5 fixture, skip the work, and accept that it is physically kinda obtrusive but works 100% of the time.

@Ryan - I know you can’t give exact numbers but how have the blade sales been so far? I would imagine pretty strong?
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
We will share this in an upcoming video, but the number one most popular light this year is the AI prime. This is determined by what reefers pick up from us. However, as an entire line, it is the Blade by a mile. Probably partially because the blade is not limited to just new installs but also makes existing installs better. The audience is just a lot bigger than most lights, so it is not a fair comparison. The prime is very popular with smaller tanks and new tank installs, there are a lot of smaller tanks, so not surprised about this one either.

What about the XHO’s ? Are they blade substitutes? And the SKY from Neptune ?
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
XHO's , OR3's and other strips are all legit. However, many strips are primarily based on 450 royals and don't give you violet or near UV spectrums. The blade has the 450 royals if you want them but you can also tune them down and overdrive the other channels. There is a lot more flexibility. The Sky is a big pannel that performed well in our shadow and distribution tests. I think would do even better flanked with the glow blades to add more violet or chlorophyll A range light.

So do you recommend using the tuned radion settings you showed on this live vs the one in the color episode where royal blue was 33%?

Red light is filtered out by water correct? So coral technically don’t use it… however red will increase par levels correct? Am I understanding this properly? So Par while a great piece of data it can be misleading?
@raisethereef Жыл бұрын
PAR can absolutely be misleading. I could create a light with 1000 PAR and only use green LEDs. If we don't have a general idea of what the spectrum is, PAR is pointless.
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
Red will be filtered out at deeper water levels in a reef, but many of the corals are collected shallower than that. The Importance of red is not entirely agreed upon by reefers or biologists. It will measure as PAR but it would be rare for anyone to use enough to materially change PAR. Probably taking 5 par at LPS levels and 30 PAR at SPS.

I just saw this video and I appreciate everything BRS offers to us to improve our results! I do have a few questions tho. If the atmosphere scatters blue light then you say basically for that reason the reef ends up primarily lit by blue. Well then there's the ocean water column over the corals. Further filtering out the rest of the spectrums ? ( red, yellow, green etc). Which means if you take a spectrometer down 20 ft and measure the light right next to a wild acropora colony. Would you measure only 450nm and less? Would be interesting for someone to verify. Next, I'm a 20 year MH user recently now using LED. My 14k MH would grow my corals way faster than my Radion adjusted heavy in the blue. And the MH is more of a point source similar to the sun , the radion lights more evenly like the sky. So why is the MH performance better if it's doing the opposite of what is suggested in this video? Thanks guys. Good work on these videos!

I'm surprised there aren't more halogen/t5 hybrid options.

So are we supposed to not use LEDs any longer

Still using my 4’ T5 lights over my 6’ tank. Looks like I’m adding blades to the end of my aquarium.

I got question abt led here. What r key different effects between led in single-point format like ai prime 16hd vs multiple-point format like ai blade? Why single point tends to cost more?
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
Single points produce more shadows. The reason they cost more is the typically have wider spectrum LEDs and fewer LED's . Single points also require active cooling.
@ZenrioBelieve Жыл бұрын
@@BRStv thx sir. So the shimmering effect and strong power are the key selling point of single point format

Not an uncommon position. Easiest way is to emulate someone else's installation that works awesome for them. Outside of that, pick the science that makes sense to you and apply it the best you can.

I’m new to the reefing hobby, planning my 4ft mixed reef tank (Waterbox Infinia Reef 150.4), and lights are the area I’m most confused about. I was thinking of going with Radion XR15 (or XR30) G6 Pros and/or Kessil AP9X (or even ReefLED 90s), but I’m even more unsure after watching this video. Any suggestions about what would be my best option?
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
This is what we produced using the xr30 pros spaced 18" apart. The ultra wide angle lens is a reasonable alternative to ultra big fixture kzbin.infoMnL5YK-dZfU

@@BRStv Is there any way to add some shimmer to the tank though without having too much PAR? I’d like to have some shimmer, but it seems like the xr30 pros don’t have much at all.

So we should make a tank lid that mimics what the sky does to the light

Always wondered if aerogel would do that. www.modlar.com/brands/solera/solera-s-r9aerogel-light-diffusing-glass-unit/ or solarinnovations.com/news/case-studies/lumira-aerogel/

Frustrating, we have been screaming this for years that the spotlight was not good.. this is why I have alway been a fan of the reefbrites.

How about the reef flare from reef factory? I want to get these lights on my first tank. But there none good revieuws. But i like the design. And from what i can find they seem rally good
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
I haven't used them so it's hard to say. The bars lens design suggests they would perform like the orphek bars.
@slunksneeze8924 Жыл бұрын
I cant link them. But you have the wrong ones. Its the "new" Light from reef factory. You have small medium large. Called reef flare pro for the large ones.
@slunksneeze8924 Жыл бұрын
My lfs (netherlands) recommend them. But there is no real revieuw to find on yt. About par. Shadows. Like you do in your vids. So just for the design. Its a big gamble to get them. There are 2 version asswell a white blue one and a blue one. Nothing to find about them

So is it the AI BLADE the reason why this works. Or will any led strips get similar results? Like reefbrite or red sea led bars
@BRStv Жыл бұрын
Almost any strip will be an improvement. In our tests, the blade was significant;y higher par, had a wider spread wider spectrum and has more adjustable channels than the other strips we tested. That combo made it better for our applications.
@raisethereef Жыл бұрын
Blade is better than XHO and in my opinion the XHO was the strip light to beat for many years. Unless you needed to mount your lights 20” over the tank
