I like how there's actually all ranges of reactions. It's not all just pats in the back or words for wisdom. Akira giving it straight to the head, essentially saying "I you judge others at their worse then you're just as low as everyone else". In stark contrast to Pogo's warm hug.

Yun: You rejected the choices that could have helped you. Lei: I was like you once, but now I'm walking a slow & difficult path to change myself. Hong: Using violence to solve violence changes nothing. Akira: Yeah, we suck, but using that to justify your actions is unacceptable! Pogo: (You did bad, but me love you. You not alone now.) @Xifihas That is a good point, especially with two occasions on how Akira represents Responsibility: 1. Where early on the Near Future level, he did told his sister, Kaori, that he is going to fix what he started. 2. Where after Oersted has redeemed himself by slaying Odio once and for all, Akira calls him out on how he committed all of the atrocities across time because others have ostracized him, viewing it as an excuse. He's not wrong in that remark, either.

Pogo's is the best one in my opinion. A simple hug. Just a hug. He gave Oersted something he'd had taken away from him for so very long; Human warmth. In the final moments of his life, for just a second, he was given love, care, acceptance, and forgiveness from such a simple gesture. ALL of these endings are good, but Pogo is the only one that made me cry. Once upon a time, I lived a life where I couldn't even accept human warmth. I was a hurt, traumatized, defensive, and generally angry/sad creature who pushed everyone away because with everything I'd gone through, just the idea of letting someone close enough to hurt me again was so damn scary that I preemptively kept it from happening. I made a friend after a few years who basically was the equivalent of Pogo in that they gave me a simple understanding and love that I hadn't allowed myself... I cannot describe just how healing it was to have something like that. Oersted's stunned response just shows how powerful something so simple really is. Just a hug. A wordless gesture. Never, ever forget how strongly small things can affect someone.

Akira is a close second for me. It was VERY clear that Akira's and Oersted's trajectories in life were similar to each other. The difference here is Akira doesn't blame others for his own misfortune and used his anger to do good. Oersted, meanwhile, surrendered to his weakness and went on a rampage. For this reason alone I was happy to choose Akira as my final chapter protagonist. The first time I saw that ending I realized I made the right choice.
@popplio7891

I was gonna say something very similar. What’s more, Pogo is a child, from a primordial time. No language, no wealth, no laws. His life was spent simply hunting, eating, sleeping, and seeking a partner to continue his species. Yet here he is, thrust into another world, seeing bizarre people, grotesque creatures, and being forced to combat cosmic evil. Yet when he sees his would-be killer before him, wounded, speaking a tongue that has no bearing on him, down and defenseless…yet with all that he saw, and what little he could understand…Pogo embraces Oersted. Through all of this chaos, he was able to see Oersted’s suffering, seeing that his kingdom (or pack in this case) has rejected him and deprived him of love or empathy, he gives Oersted what he was robbed of for eternity, before allowing Oersted to pass on, in the presence of someone who would still offer him human compassion after his atrocities. Even without dialogue from Pogo, there is absolute raw emotion on display here and it is beautiful.

What’s even more impactful; the word for “love” in Japanese is “ai”, which is what he shouts here, as well as in the ending of his own scenario. The first word he (and by extension other humans) learned was “love”, and he expresses it here to someone who lost that feeling in their life.

"The Civilized Man is more dangerous than the Neanderthal, because the Neanderthal knows that if he pushes his luck too far, he's going to get a club through his skull." - Anonymous(?) The fact that Pogo went up and hugged that poor, broken man; and in doing so defied that above quote so beautifully; that right there is a total tear--jerker. Coming back to this because I thought some more about Cube's scene. It's been said in the comments here as a joke, but I think this unironically: Cube isn't giving flowers just as a gift, but as an offering for what will soon be Oersted's grave. Cube has watched 2 (3 if you catch OD-10 turning off Rachel's life-support) different people die in his chapter. He can tell Oersted is not getting back up.

Akira letting Oersted go in the end shows his growth really well. At one point he was just some shithead kid who started street fights and got other orphans to steal stuff for him. His anger and hate were even his greatest weapon against the conspirators during his chapter. I legitimately hated this guy when I played Near Future, and I picked him as my endgame protag mostly as a joke. But during this ending, he consistently fought the urge to kill Oersted, showing him mercy as per the true ending requirements. Even when Akira gets his time for a speech by holding the guy up by the scruff of his collar, this shines through. He slowly breathes to calm himself down, you can hear in the voice performance how he's holding back somewhat, then he lets the man who destroyed his life out of his grasp before deciding to land the killing blow on Odio with his words rather than his fists. This subtle bout of characterization said more in one chapter and a couple lines sprinkled here or there than most games will say about protagonists who stick around for 100 hours of gameplay. It's why Akira went from being my least favorite LAL protag to my favorite video game character.

Pogo almost made me cry. Maybe it's a cliche where the antagonist only needs a hug, but as a player of the SNES version, I really needed something like that for Oerstedd. I kinda felt like him back in the edgy ass days, and found my way back in a similar way. I know it's a nerd comparison, but I've always liked the way he reflects on what the other protagonists show him.

Oersted's voice actor is so fucking GOOD with the emotional delivery that I can see moments that the sprites don't even reflect. Him just going stock still processing the fact that Pogo is hugging him, then the emotional dam he built around his heart just breaking entirely and collapsing to the floor as he's realizing that despite everything, despite all that he's put them all through, there are STILL those who would show him any sympathy. Besides Hong's, it's the only time I can imagine him breaking down into a crying fit between scenes and have it be completely natural.

@@galaxycamerata Yeah, Oersted's VA is phenomenal! I can visualize his face moment-by-moment after Pogo hugged him - which is impressive, since the sprite doesn't even include his face (and he only moved once). I feel like a big part of what redeems Oersted is that everyone here would have died anyways, if he didn't come in clutch at the last moment to finish with renewed hope what he began in his despair. It shows that in the end, had anyone reached out to him, none of this would have happened. People reached out to him WELL past what should have been the point of no return, and still he answered when he had nothing left to lose since literal ages ago... The call was still enough to bring his spirit back to what it once had been.

I personally love what they did with Akira's take. Sure he has every right to tear Oersted a new one, satisfying even, but with that little breath he took beforehand, it makes it feel like Akira understood had things been different, he and the others could've very easily ended up just like Oersted. Heck, Akira almost did if Matsu didn't stop him after the boss fight with Watanabe. In that moment, he wasn't just berating Oersted for giving in to hate; He was also indirectly chastising himself for very nearly going down that same path.

I think the thing with Akira’s bit is that… well, sure, Oersted’s actions past Streibough’s death were all entirely his own, but the world didn’t exactly leave him with much of a choice. By the time he’s presented with the opportunity to become the Lord of Dark, he has one of two general options: take up the mantle and go full evil, or refuse and either live out a hollow life alone and on the run, or just straight-up kill himself. With the royal family and all the other heroes dead, it’d take a goddamn miracle for his name to be cleared within Lucrece, and it wouldn’t be long before more hot-blooded teenagers would start coming after him. If Oersted refuses to become the Lord of Dark, the best he can hope for is that Lucrece’s search parties never find him and that he gets the chance to live out the rest of his years surviving on his own… which isn’t really much of a life at all. But Oersted couldn’t refuse taking up the mantle because of the simple fact that he’s a passionate shonen protagonist living in the wrong genre. Simply laying down his arms and accepting a peaceful life when he still has so much energy to spend isn’t possible for him. If he doesn’t vent, he’ll self-destruct. Not to mention that at this point, he’s desperate for satisfaction after having it ripped away from him so many times; and the only thing that will satisfy him now will be the knowledge that all his suffering meant _something - ANYTHING._ But the only real way for it to mean something… is for him to become the Lord of Dark. Honestly, Oersted’s story just pisses me off something fierce. He got to be the unlucky shmuck that the world decided to doom for shits and giggles, and when it made him lash out in the only way he knew how, it kicked him in the dick and told him off for not being smart enough to self-reflect at any point in his life when he was never given a suitably convincing reason to do so until it was too late. Just… fuck, man. If anything, Streibough’s the one who deserves to burn in hell.

Akira’s speech made me consider something. Unlike the other incarnations of Odio, either active threats or direct orchestrators of carnage… Odeo itself was more of an end goal. An excuse for three men to arrange the kidnapping and liquefaction of over 2000 unwilling humans, and call themselves anything other than sociopathic monsters. Something to blame for their sins other than themselves. So of course Akira wouldn’t have any patience for Oersted doing something similar.

You also have to put it in perspective. No one really got hurt as much by their respective incarnation as Akira. Odo was just a random T-Rex Pogo only fought because the altar broke and he landed in his pit. The Earthen Heart Master may have lost his fellow students, but this was settled with Wan Lees death. Same goes with Masaru. O. Dio was just a random crazy gunman, something Sundown would have met dozens of times before. Ode Iou was also just one of many warlords Oboromaru had to kill for a mission. And while Cube lost his fellow crew members to OD-10, he, by his limitations does not process the concept of grief or need to avenge. Akira, on the other hand..... lost his father thanks to the conspiracy..... lost his best friend and paragon while trying to combat it.... has seen what they did to Watanabes dad (and while he does push him around, he still cares about him, as it is implied he never told Watanabe of this gruesome fate)... would have almost lost his little sister and the woman who took care of him.... and has seen his home almost burned to the ground.... Everything bad in his life is linked to this conspiracy, so seeing the one, who create the reason for all this in the first place, of course he would be pissed.

Hong practically never gets chosen, which means very few people would get to see his ending organically. A shame, because it's genuinely amazing in its simplicity. In one swift movement, Oersted acknowledges how he fell and indirectly teaches the player a very simple lesson about hatred. And then we get to see him take one more moment to mourn it all. "T'was in fear and ignorance they struck. But I, in bitterness and spite."

Pogo is the best one for sure. As the villain, Oersted spent all his time ranting about how selfishness and violence are human instinct. Pogo, though, is all instinct. He can't possibly understand what Oersted went through. All he knows is that a weird-sounding stranger tried to kill him and his friends multiple times. Hell, his first impression of Oersted is the scent of a nasty, malicious monster, detectable even from literally the other side of the kingdom. Out of all the heroes, he has the least reason to show sympathy. But he does. With one hug, he completely destroys any argument Oersted could make, faster than any speech could. Because he finally sees that for all our faults, humanity's most fundamental instinct is to love and comfort the lost, the wounded, the broken. It is, perhaps, our greatest quality.

People dunk on Akira for how straightforward he was to Oersted but… it’s probably the best medicine that could be given. Oersted redeemed himself, but someone needs to remember the reality of the situation, Akira chooses to be that person. All of this happened because Oersted judged others by their worst sides, he expected forgiveness but it was an excuse to not face the problem. And that lead to him becoming Odio. It’s what happened to Lawless due to killing Akira’s father, and it lead to his own death. Excuses destroy more things in the universe then weapons and war ever could, so we all need someone to pull us away from them and talk straight to us. Akira chose to be so for Oersted in his final moments, a choice with resolve behind it as it’s for the person who is the strongest incarnation of Hate in all times, to pull them out of it and give them a clear view forward, even if it’s just for their last moments.

Akira actually lost the most to Odio's wrath, so, it makes sense when you think about it. Pogo, Oboromaru, & Sundown were thankfully able to protect what was precious to them before Odio's influence could take anything away. Masaru lost his respected rivals, but fought to honor their strengths & memory. The Disciple had already lost everything once before, only to lose everything again after the Earthen Heart Master took them in, but not before the Master was able to put them on the right path. Cube lost all that he could call family, but is still too young/underdeveloped to actually feel hate or a need for revenge. But Akira? He lost his father to the conspiracy of Odeo, he lost his mentor & new father figure in the fight to stop Odeo, the heads of the conspiracy almost took away his sister & home, too. Akira was the most hurt by Odio, s actually showing restraint in not resorting to violence shows even more development for Akira.

True they see elements they recognize in Oersted but I felt like Lei had the most complete picture out of them all. I like how everyone's speeches has their own points. Even Akira's has a point of its own as well, as not all people who came from terrible pasts turn out to be monsters in the end. It is ultimately down to the both the actions of the person and the circumstances they have been when it comes to shaping the character they themself will have in the end. One guy can come out as a good person despite their history of being abused or whatever, but another can come out as a bad one because of the same past. The same situation can be applied to people with a good past history, as there are bad people who have pasts that lack any bad things done to them that exist. Humanity can suck at times, but they can also do some amazing things. Nobody is black and white here.

Oersted never asked to be treated as a villain to begin with. I'm not saying Oersted did nothing wrong. As nice as it is that the protags try to cheer up Oersted (well, except Akira)...they were only seeing things from THEIR side of the spectrum, from the side of a hero. They hadn't been in Oersted's shoes. Oersted went through so much shit in just one day. He had his wife kidnapped, he watched a once-beloved hero die, he got tricked into killing his own king and is demonized by the entire kingdom of Lucrece as a result, he lost his only ally left in the form of Uranus, he found out his best friend had been the one behind all this deceit, and finally, after being forced to kill said friend, his love appears and KILLS herself *in front of him*, whether it be from a setup by Streibough (which was implied during the scene) or a false love she had for Oersted. His era was fickle, EXTREMELY fickle; everyone in it relied on him & Hasshe to do all the work in the name of their protection, and when they stopped doing that, they ridiculed & hated the heroes for it, but at least Hasshe took the easy way out by simply leaving the people behind. Oersted? He was LURED into being hated by literally everyone in Lucrece without even being given a chance to explain himself, and considering that other kingdoms may exist & would've heard of the upcoming hero too, rumors of his "demonhood" would've spread to them eventually and cause them to hate Oersted too, especially if they were rival kingdoms. Uranus said that so long as even one person believed in you, you shouldn't lose hope...but sometimes hope is the last thing to die, and in this case, it was literal. As Oersted himself said, he was utterly alone after that: no one to turn to, nothing to fight for, not even anywhere to run...he was trapped. It's no freaking wonder why he turned to ACTUAL demonhood at the end of his story. I can't imagine anyone who would've gone through all that wouldn't. Except...was it really a choice? Oersted had literally nothing left at the end of the day, and if he was going to do SOMETHING, why not getting back at the people who wronged him so? Better than wandering Earth at the mercy of humanity itself. He had all the reason to strike back at humanity, and he certainly couldn't be blamed for becoming Odio. Tl;dr, the protags' words don't ring as true as they think. Sometimes evil DOES win the day, and when it does, the effects are devastating...

Part 1/3 (other parts in the replies): Thanks for the upload (this is a really neat way to wrap up the game)! I think Yun's speech is my favorite one, because it emphasizes the importance of choice (like Akira's speech), but at the same time it acknowledges the suffer-ing Oersted went through (like Hong's speech) and how it lead him to ha-te (like Lei's speech). It's also the speech that leads Oersted to accurately sum up his whole situation (his other realizations are usually only about one aspect of it): he let himself be defined by the stig-ma caused by Streibough's plot, instead of the giving people the forgive-ness Uranus asked him to.
@pedrostormrage
@pedrostormrage 4 ай бұрын
Part 2/3: In fact, Uranus's last words are surprisingly close to Yun's speech: "They asked...demanded...Se-crets. About you. 'Is he the de-mon prince, or simple pa-wn?'. Such fe-ar, such an-ger I see in their eyes...In gri-ef, their ba-ser nature laid ba-re. Fleeting glimpse of what good Hasshe did ware within. In dark-ness, dare not des-pair. 'Tis a test. Do we surrender to so-rrow and ha-te...Or rise above, and choose instead to trust in one another...I would take the leap. I'd wager life - what little I have left. And plead your inno-cence to all who'll hear. [...] Inherit our cause. Keep the fai-th. For-give". Like Hong made Oersted realize, he did indeed "fail the test": "They wrong-ed me. Wound-ed me. Revenge-d in kind. Nay. Far worse. 'Twas in fe-ar and igno-rance they struck. But I, in bitter-ness and spi-te".

Part 3/3: In the end, I think Yun really was the disciple that most embodied Shifu's wisdom and compassion (he was the only one who decided to stop steal-ing even before Shifu intervened, even with the odds against him), so it's very fitting he'd give the best speech (in my opinion, at least).

Oersted specifically using the phrase "once upon a time" (13:48 15:05) emphasizes how his story was just a fairy tale gone completely wrong. I'm glad that, for the most part, the others chose to show him kindness in the end.

Pogo and Akira's are my favorite endings. Akira rightfully kicks Oersted's butt for daring to pull a "Woe Is Me" card after practically committing genocide of the whole kingdom, but Pogo understood he did it out of a misguided need to feel loved and offered him kindness in his last moments alive. Both have their merits, and it's great to see them side by side like this.

I don’t think he ever really tried to pull the woe is me. Like at that point he wasn’t looking for sympathy he was consumed by rage. Akira kinda just kicked a dying man when he was done and already stepped in to help them. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t bad character moment but it showed his immaturity compared to the rest. Which makes sense like oersted akira has quite the anger problem

@@rances4418True like while it was oersted's choice to doom the timelines, akira doesn't know the full context as all he saw was a dude harming the ones who had nothing to do with his downfall. That barely contained rage in his breath? He UNDERSTOOD that Oersted had helped them all! Considering how Akira behaved against some of the more reviled villains of his timeline, he would've been much, MUCH harsher to Oersted if he simply "kicked a dying man when he was done."

Damn I found this after I do all the ending by myself lol no one talk about Yun so let me stand up for this boy. His speech hard to understand when compare to the rest so in short he want Oersted to choose his path not let his emotion lead him to the path. he has many path to choose and Oersted let his anger and hate took control of him and go to path of revenge but maybe he can choose other path he can run away just forget this kingdom and go to find something to do, you save your home that something you should proud no matter what other say you are Hero that .But he let his anger and hate blind him for other path that can be choose and that lead to this tragic fate. For me Yun is the the protagonist in his story(dont get me wrong I like other two too but Yun for me he is the protagonist) from the coward boy who dont have any talent to become someone as great as his master his story touch me so much I like scene that he train in midnight because he know he not have talent like other two or when he admit he scare to fight and hid himself make other two die but get his resolve back because he doesn't want to run away anymore.(Not to mention he start as lowest level among three and the speech before fight Odi wan Lee is so cool) Sorry for my broken Eng

I really appreciate how much more in depth these interactions are compared to the original. In the old version, Akira was basically talking out his ass for his ending and quickly became my most disliked. Here he's still a jerk, but at least he's making an effort of choosing a better approach. Cube's is my favorite though, it was pretty uninspired in the original, but they added one new detail that made the biggest impact on me. Cube gives Oersted flowers. And when all the heroes return to their own time, you can see the flowers are still there, effectively leaving them for Oersted's grave. That just means a lot to me man. Lastly I want to give a special mention to Sundown. Not because of what he said, but instead because of Oersted's response.

So Akira's attitude didn't rub you the right way. I can understand it. But I want you to take a moment to consider: Akira and his sister Kaori are orphans after their father's death, with Akira picking fights because he can read how some people may judge him poorly due to his psychic powers, The Crusaders are running a mock, kidnapping 2000 people for 3 sociopathic conspirators to sacrifice for a malevolent god, and Matsu, before his death, stated that all of Japan is in a state of chaos via military grade weapons across thenstreets. And underneath the tough exterior, he is a kind person. He takes care of his sister and the other kids, and while you may think he rubs on Watanabe hard, he does care for him to. I fact, not only do the kids call him big vro, Akira was outraged that Watanabe's father became an LH combat unit, the W1, and he didn't tell the boy, fearing that he's not ready to bear the horrid news.

He can't exactly go back and accept any punishment because he is innocent. They scold him for turning to the dark side (except Pogo and Cube. Those two are too good for this world and they're on opposite ends of the timeline) when it was Straighbough who pushed his ass. He had everything taken away from him, even the woman he loved just gave up on him when he was juggling to prove his innocence. Everything was taken from him because he won a tournament.

The Phanton Thieves could have change Oersted's heart, but they knew he's gonna die. In his last moments, the Phantom Thieves would tell him they all went through horrible upbringings, but they found love, trust, empathy and rebellion in each other. Though Oersted would find it strange that a team of Robin Hood like thieves would bring peace to society, he still calls it admirable to overcome their pain to save others and make the wrongdoers repent by confessing their sins. They earned Oersted's respect.

@@megagamer2874 I know that, but if I'm gonna include EVERY member, including P5 Royal and Strikers, it would be a LONG list to brainstorm over. But it would be like this: Ren/Joker: I do understand what it's like to be shunned. I was framed with false charges, and many who heard the story began to hate me. But, when I manifest my inner rebellion, I chose to help those who suffered in society. And I know I'm not alone. I made great friends, those who understood me for who I truly am. Sure, I'm a thief, and you were a knight, but I too fight to bring peace to society, and help those who suffered like I was. That is why I'm a Phantom Thief. Morgana/Mona: ...You may have lost everything, but you also become just as bad, if not, worse than those who hurt you. Sure, you never asked for this, but you chose to run from it all, which lead you to this. I used to be blinded by my insecurities, and let it get to me, but I have expressed myself and my members still stand by me. I alwayz cherished the moments I have with them. Don't you cherish your moments with your loved ones? Ryuji/Skull: Damn man, that's heavy. But you should've stick to your guns and be better for your people! Yeah, I got no place to talk; I'm not the smartest person ever, I speak stupid crap without thinking, and I tend to goof off from time to time. But what makes me different from what I was then, is that I do care for my friends. They helped me with my dilemma, and now I help those who had it worse. I'm more than just a thief member to everyone with me. I'm their loyal best friend. That is what I stand for. Ann/Panther: ... Well, I almost lost a dear friend of mine, who couldn't take the pressure anymore. I wanted the bastard to pay for his life, but I still tell him to confess what he did. I know you're hurt inside, but you also hurt them in the end. Do you really think it brings you peace though? Sometimes, sparing the bad guy can be a good thing, you know for the moral high ground. If they want to repent, give them a chance to take. Yusuke/Fox: ... Once upon a time, I was ignorant of the wrongdoings the man I view as father committed. That is until I learned the truth. If I must be brutally honest, you remained ignorant of your mistakes, never take your trusted allies' wisdom to heart until it is too late. I shall create an art piece to honor the memory of you facing your demon one last time, as the blackest of sin must exist with the beautiful color of virtue. Even among us Phantom Thieves. Makoto/Queen: I used to just follow what I was told, kind of like what a tool your people took you for. But my rebellion tells me I must cut loose and make my decisions, to be my honest self. Helping others ks a good thing, if your actions speak louder than words. Futaba/Oracle: ...I... I've been lost in my despair before... Others have said that it's my fault for something fabricated, so I believe it too. But, I have come to see what the truth really is about. I might never see my extended family again, for a long time. But through all of this, I still have my friends, and my Dad who have my back. Haru/Noir: You used to have good friends, don't you? Friends who give your their support and guidance to help you in need? It does seem that some of your people have betrayed you, and sone of your loved ones betrayed you as well. But you do know some that you do trusted before they passed away. Trust must be earned, but it can still be worth it. There's no need to live in loneliness. Goro/Crow: Well, it seems that we have more in common than I have anticipated. ... It's hard for me to admit this, but I also sought to be loved, all because of the one man who made me as his bastard child. While we sought nothing good for what we wanted deep down, you still let it slip away as the "Demon King." Everything else up to this point is just an excuse for you to cause this mess. Plain and simple. Sumire/Violet: Losing evedything you hold dear is painful, I should know. I have been running away from it for so long, because I blamed myself for the tragedy of losing my sister. But then, my senpais have helped me see the truth and learn to grow from my grieving. People should learn and grow from their pain, even if it's easier said than done. Sophia/Sophie: It may be wierd for you since I appear human, but lack a human soul, but I am still independent, like you and the friends. Compassion and love is what we all share. Humans can come to hate, but they come to love as well. Showing love and kindeness shows your good character, not showing weakness. Most people do deserve such kindness, more than you think. Zenkichi/Wolf: ... I have lost my way before, so I kinda get what your coming from. I fear for my daughter after my wife was taken from me, but it end up straining our relationship until recently. I was a hypocrite, but I have come to fight for what my code of justice stands for. You have been wounded sure, but you made those horrible things yourself, so you have to make the best of it in the next life.
