I still can’t get over the fact there was a game in 1994 with this type of plot lines (if you know you know), and then to have them all intertwine in the end game and bring them full circle was just chef kiss. 13:13 The soundtrack was redone with a live band and orchestra under the supervision of the game’s composer Yoko Shimomura, who is known for her work on the Kingdom Hearts series and Final Fantasy XV. The Live-A-Live soundtrack was Ms. Shimomura’s first work with Square. The game’s original MIDI files were wisely lost. Therefore, she arranged the soundtrack with a live band and orchestra, instead of retrieving the MIDI files, and I’m glad about that. Hence, Live-A-Live’s soundtrack got better treatment than that of Trials of Mana.

It always seems weird to me when people use "NTSC" as shorthand to refer to the North American market, when it's also used in Japan. If you look at PS1/PS2 games, you'll see Japanese games are coded "NTSC-J" vs "NTSC-U" for North American games.

I loved the remake. But neglecting pogo's line really pissed me off. Either the japanese staff could have the foresight of recording the english line, or the english staff could've voiced that single important line by someone with a similar voice, don't know. Something would be better than ignoring the line and stepping on it by enforcing the error on the subtitles, which is what they did.

The censorship is almost certainly not due to CERO but due to Squenix's "ethics department" or whatever they called it. Alcohol and tobacco might have been removed to get a lower rating, but the lingerie wouldn't have been a problem.

Gotta love the 1080p resolution on display for an HD-2D game on switch finally. I liked Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy a lot, but gosh Pixel art sprites don't look good when the pixels are blurry and deserve to be sharply rendered in all there blocky goodness, so I appreciate the developer team seemed to tone down the post processing effects to be able to hit the Switch's native docked resolution.

It's good news that it sounds like it turned out better than Octopath Traveler, but playing that on Switch really made me wish for an options menu or being able to mods things to my liking. If they don't come after a year or so I'll just buy them on Switch, but I really hope other versions are announced. (When Nintendo brings the next console it would be nice if we could get updates for things like resolution boosts and higher framerates though too. Because I'd be shocked if it's not backwards compatible with Switch.)

Just finished the game, I think the remake indeed did a good job at making good balancing while maintaining most of what original game has (even then, the translation problem wasn't present in some of the languages, like the Korean and Chinese subtitles are still faithful to the Japanese one) Definitely would recommend the game to people who want to try out or just want to play a game alike, though for a game that takes at most 30 hours some people may find the remake too expensive

I just finished this game and did not expect to fall in love with it like I did. It's such a charming and unique adventure with a memorable soundtrack and fun characters. I really enjoyed every single chapter, even the ones I didn't think I'd be too keen on. There's part of me that really wishes the game was just longer and that there was more of it, but at the same time I recognize how it really doesn't overstay its welcome, and accomplishes everything it needs to even in the shorter chapters.

The original Live A Live first came out in Japan during my freshman year of high school. It was developed in a time video game age rating boards, and in a time before social media and cellphones. My mom was 49 at the time of the original Live A Live, and my second older brother is around that age at the time of the remake. I didn’t have access to the Internet back then.

It's a pity the original Live A Live wasn't included along with the remake--it always irks me when this is the case. How hard is it to include both? Square did do this for Trials of Mana, translating both the original and the remake--not too difficult, since both versions more-or-less share the same script. And since the Live A Live remake is also similar to the original, most of the same translation could have been used. Or, simply use the fan version! That would have been even more awesome.

@@Mr.Pacario Well, I'd say that's already taken care of actually, with the original rom dump (which people can learn Japanese to read and have it unfiltered/uncensored), and the original fan translation (which may have ha some translation things fall through the cracks, due to not having a direct english variant for some things). Personally, I agree with the OP in the sense that, if I'm gonna play a game, I usually try to go straight to the best possible version of it, so that I can get the most complete experience in one playthrough. For instance, Final Fantasy 1. The original, broken as hell NES release is romdumped and easily obtained if anyone wants to play that thing, but why would I, when I can just go straight to the PSP version. It has ALL the content the previous iterative remakes have, and more, the best graphics of all the versions, and the most polish (few glitches, aside from the one glitch that persisted in all versions: The critical hit bug). I can just play the PSP version, and experience everything the game has to offer in one playthrough. To me, that defines a good remake: The quality, quality of life and polish are ramped up, all possible content from previous versions, and new content, all in one complete package. Other well done remake examples include, but are not limited to: Final Fantasy 2 PSP, Final Fantasy 4 PSP, Pokemon Fire Red, Pokemon HeartGold, Crash N Sane Trilogy, etc. No matter how much nostalgia I may have for the original versions (which are easily accessed through emulation), why would I tell someone to play Pokemon Red as their first experience with Kanto, when FireRed exists, and does everything Red does but better and more polished?

Hope this game get released on Steam one day. Octopath Traveller was originally a Nintendo exclusive before coming to Steam a year later. One of my biggest issues was the enemy encounters in the final chapter were too repetitive and were usually a pain to deal with. Does anyone know if there's more variety or if the enemies are at least more bearable to fight?

Yeah I believe they changed it in the remake, but this is just an observance. The encounter rate doesn't seem to have changed much, but it definitely feels like they slightly lowered it, and the enemy formations change as your party levels. I hope this helps!

@@fieryrebirth The formations do change in the original as well, it's just that when your levels start to peak, you end up fighting the same handful of formations over and over. One in particular features enemies with extremely high defence that counter attacks by inflicting all manner of debuffs and stat aliments to the entire party.

Just gonna add this over in japan the Remake is seen as utter trash the changes to the script are Extreme and the censorship beyond acceptable Live A Live was always seen as an adult focused game sanitizing it pissed them off. Subjective note the don't like the HD retro look in general and get turned off it stating its the worst of both styles mashed together. I have to agree with them on the Script way to many narrative changes and Famous jokes removed for the "message" and replaced with generic or insulting dialogue aimed at them. I will always take a literal translation myself. But i do like the HD retro look in certain cases but man when the 3d buildings get in the way they look Awful.

I tried out the SFC version a couple of times and never felt like I got a bead on the gameplay, so never played too much into it. That being said I really love the visual asthetic of the remake. I'd love to get it but I think I need a deep discount before I take the plunge on remake. But I am really stoked for that DQ3 remake. Wish they'd stop teasing us.

I really hate the changes they use for these games for things that some people might be offended by, I wish they'd make the changes to the default and have an option to play the game as it was originally made.

Wishing for what it was in the original is to wish for a higher CERO rating. If the Live-A-Live Dev team want to sell their product to their target audience, they have to comply to these ratings.

Being a gamer from the early 1990's is weird for this very reason. In the US we used to have a lot of censorship from Japanese games due to religious/'child-protecting' reasons. Then between the late 90's and 2000's we pretty much didn't have any, and it was great. Now circle back to today, we have it yet again for poIitical/'moral' reasons... ultimately the same thing all over again. Sad how all these unfortunate trends always repeat themselves... 😓

@@VillainViran Ah yes. You're correct. It's not CERO's fault... Alone. The Square Enix Ethics Department also has to consider ESRB, PEGI, etc when censoring aspects in their games. ESRB is apparently notorious for not providing clarity on what provides a T rating.

Turn off the voice acting, tutorial pop up screen as well as the mini radar on the bottom right, and the remake will be closer to the original but with enhanced graphics.
